Brilliant uncirculated solid copper cents were pressed for the manufacturer by Eurolink Design Inc.. The elongated coins were coated with a protective "lacquer" sealer before placing them under a clear plastic window on the book cover. (The windowed pressed coin in the cover of the penny collecting book is a patented feature offered only by Lodestar® which we are told later became a part of CTM, PennyCollector.com.) The protective "lacquer" often has a brown, mottled appearance and can easily be mistaken for tarnish.
First on-stage August 1, 2000 embedded in the front
cover of Disneyland Souvenir Penny Collector Book, First Edition, also known as The First Edition Penny Book. Books were first sold at the
Emporium and later also from trays atop some penny presses. Removed from sale on about August 15, 2000. Reportedly, a design flaw kept the books from closing properly when filled with coins. Knowledgeable sources confirmed that 5000
were made. Of the 5000, about 2500 were delivered to Disneyland. Reports stated about 1500 sold for
$7.00 in the Park and about 1000 were sold through various Disney outlets and
Cast Member stores at $3.50 each. (
Those were the days! ) 2500 assumed
destroyed. Rumors have suggested that there may have been a dispute over ownership of this #DLP0137 die. Coin die status is was believed to be open after book issue, but, may have been canceled / destroyed since then.
The Disneyland Penny Collector books guide had images of penny collecting books that followed this classic collector book. The first of them arrived soon after the First Edition book was taken off stage. Sadly, to date not a single onstage penny book has featured a pressed penny in the cover, much less a limited edition pressed penny.
The 1st Edition Souvenir Penny Book that held the DL0146 was also the very
first pressed penny book offered at any Disney Resort. It featured that cool iconic elongated coin in the cover! (Coins displayed separately here were removed cleaned to remove the tinted protective finish and reveal the smooth. bright, solid copper coin beneath. )

Editor's note: We are often reminded that the preferred numismatic term is "
Elongated Coins ". However, as the rebellious, risk taking, devil may care ParkPennies.com contributors that we are, temptation often gets the better of us. As a result, you may see the more casual, terms like:
stamped coins ,
pressed coins , pressed nickels, pressed dimes, pressed quarters,
smashed pennies , flattened pennies, crushed pennies, squashed pennies, rolled pennies, mashed pennies, stamped pennies, smushed pennies, stretched pennies, memory pennies, keepsake pennies, flattened pennies, and souvenir coin medallions to describe these fun
pressed coin souvenirs. :-) Here are some pages about the often asked questions of
How many pressed coins are at Disney? and
How much do pressed coins cost? Just for fun, here is a page with a bit of a different take on
Pressed Coins Facts and Fiction with tips on how different coins press,
cool pressed coin jewelry , early penny presses... Happy Collecting! Boomer and the folks at ParkPennies.com :-)
