These
coins are from The Disneyland Souvenir Penny Collector First
Edition Book front cover and were not vended by machine. (This Disneyland pressed coin number made with the possibly now canceled #DLP0137.0.0 obverse elongated coin die in its original "0" state / variation, paired with a blank "0" reverse coin die.) Larger pressed penny image in
frame or window # 1 2 3
Brilliant uncirculated solid copper cents were pressed for the manufacturer by Eurolink Design Inc.. The elongated coins were coated with a protective "lacquer" sealer before placing them under a clear plastic window on the book cover. (The windowed pressed coin in the cover of the penny collecting book is a patented feature offered only by Lodestar® which we are told later became a part of CTM, PennyCollector.com.) The protective "lacquer" often has a brown, mottled appearance and can easily be mistaken for tarnish.
First on-stage August 1, 2000 embedded in the front
cover of Disneyland Souvenir Penny Collector Book, First Edition, also known as The First Edition Penny Book. Books were first sold at the
Emporium and later also from trays atop some penny presses. Removed from sale on about August 15, 2000. Reportedly, a design flaw kept the books from closing properly when filled with coins. Knowledgeable sources confirmed that 5000
were made. Of the 5000, about 2500 were delivered to Disneyland. Reports stated about 1500 sold for
$7.00 in the Park and about 1000 were sold through various Disney outlets and
Cast Member stores at $3.50 each. ( Those were the days!) 2500 assumed
destroyed. Rumors have suggested that there may have been a dispute over ownership of this #DLP0137 die. Coin die status is was believed to be open after book issue, but, may have been canceled / destroyed since then. The Disneyland Penny Collector books guide had images of penny collecting books that followed this classic collector book. The first of them arrived soon after the First Edition book was taken off stage. Sadly, to date not a single onstage penny book has featured a pressed penny in the cover, much less a limited edition pressed penny.
The 1st Edition Souvenir Penny Book that held the DL0146 was also the very first pressed penny book offered at any Disney Resort. It featured that cool iconic elongated coin in the cover! (Coins displayed separately here were removed cleaned to remove the tinted protective finish and reveal the smooth. bright, solid copper coin beneath. )

The Disneyland Pressed Penny Books
Our Take on The Pressed Penny Book Collecting Phenomenon
Disney stretched pressed penny books have an interesting story. The original prototype Disneyland Souvenir Penny Collector™ Limited Edition elongated coin book was the start of something big. It contained only a humble DL0015 Flat Ears Mickey Rays pressed penny in its cover, but, most any pressed penny collector could see at a glance it would be a hit. That Limited Edition pressed coin book design, with a few small changes, became The Souvenir Penny Collector Book, First Edition. In turn, the
First Edition Disneyland Souvenir Penny Collector book became the first penny book ever offered at any Disney Park. That very popular, but, short-lived, stretched coin book offered an exclusive, limited edition elongated or "smashed" coin, the DL0146, in its cover. Sadly, to date, that First Edition Penny Collector book has been the only on-stage Disney penny book to feature a real pressed penny elongated coin in its cover.
Based on our research, after the prototype Limited Edition Disney pressed penny coin book and the on-stage First Edition Disneyland pressed coin books, the prototype Second Edition penny book was developed. A book that, like the First Edition penny book, offered an exclusive limited edition coin in its cover, this time the coveted DN0023. You may have noticed the Second Edition book was branded "Disneyland Resort" rather than "Disneyland". That caused some advanced collectors to search the entire Disneyland Resort... in vein. Unfortunately, the Second Edition book never was released.
Many pressed penny collecting books or elongated coin holders have followed. The early Disneyland pressed penny book issues are shown above. Matter of fact, most all Disneyland Resorts have introduced pressed penny collecting books of several different colors, styles and themes. Sadly they all are missing one of the key features that made the original Disney pressed penny book such a hit, the er... ah... PRESSED PENNY in the cover! True, there have been a few Tokyo pressed penny books with simulated medal souvenirs in the cover and a WDW pressed penny book with a punched metal silhouette of Mickey Mouse in the cover. But, no on-stage Disney pressed penny books with real elongated coins are known to this date, save The Souvenir Penny Collector, First Edition book. We are hopeful that the "pressed penny in the cover" books may return to Disneyland. After all, today, there are hundreds of Museums, space centers, national and state parks, zoos, aquariums, themed restaurants, and amusement / theme parks that offer these very cool collectible pressed penny books with pressed pennies in the cover. It just doesn't seem right that Disney Resorts don't.
Longtime collectors have probably heard of issues in using these pressed penny books for long term storage. We also do not suggest the use of them for long-term storage of coins. (The PVC content of the vinyl compartments can, might, under some circumstances could interact chemically with copper and zinc cents.) However, the penny books are often used for short term storage, display, and needless to say, they make a very cool pressed penny collectible by themselves! Of course, if they have an exclusive pressed penny in the cover, gotta have... two!
Happy Collecting,
Boomer
