DL Disneyland Pressed Coin Guide
The First Disney Pressed Coins in the World....
© 1996-2014 ParkPennies

Picture of the first Disney penny press marquee signThe "DL" Disneyland Park Pressed Coin Guide includes all and only pressed coins / tokens that were at some time officially offered inside the gates of Disneyland Park to regular admission guests.

The Disneyland Park elongated coin collection guide includes the very first "on-stage"1 Disney "pressed penny" also the hundreds of pressed coins that have followed at The Original Disneyland Park, Anaheim, California, USA. All coins in this guide must have been officially available inside the gates and available to the regular guests of the Disneyland. It is a varied and interesting group of penny, nickel, dime, and quarter elongated coins with even a few special pressed tokens. For the focused collector, the "DL" collection also offers several Disney "Firsts" plus coins that make up several fun sub-collections such as the Disneyland Seasonal Nickels or the Nightmare Before Christmas / Haunted Mansion...

From the earliest Disney pressed coins to the most recent, you will see significant variations in design style and die engraving quality. These changes have made for both favorites and rarities. "Vintage" pressed coins, offering a "classic look", were almost always engraved by Eurolink's well respected engraver, Mr. Jimmy Vargas. Some earlier and later dies were made by other engravers or via Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines, with varied results. A small number of coin dies were very short lived while other coin dies greeted Disney guests for many, many years. Of course, most of these penny pressed coin machines are only memories now. But, all of them live on here in the ParkPennies guide pages for your pleasure and reference, searchable by keyword, guide number, and / or image. There is a search box at the top of most ParkPennies pages for easy identification of Disney pressed coins.  Enjoy!  Hey, I made a short sentence! :-)

Because The Disneyland Park is where Disneyland pressed penny collecting all began, the "DL" collection is often the favorite group to start collecting. But, there several additional, related ParkPennies guides / collections. Other popular ParkPennies collections / guides include Disney California Adventure, Disneyland Resort Hotels and Downtown Disney, Special Event coins, Tributes... There are even specialized guides to the hard to find elongated coins that were never on-stage like Cast Member issues, Prototype / pattern coins, Test Roll coins... Elongated coin related collections like Tokens, Doubloons, Stamper / Typer souvenirs, Pressed Penny Collecting Books, and WDI Pressed Penny Pins... all of which are linked from the ParkPennies Disneyland Resort, USA & Area Pressed Coin Guides Index. For an overview of all guides / collections including Disneyland Resorts around the world such as The Tokyo Disneyland Resort, The Disneyland Paris Resort, Disneyland Hong Kong Resorts, please view our complete graphical index to All ParkPennies Pressed Penny Collections.

Happy Collecting, Boomer

1 "On-stage" coin designs authorized by Disney were engraved as prototypes before the first elongated coins were placed onstage in 1987 as described in Vance Fowler, Inventor of the Automated Coin Press Machine and ParkPennies Guide to Disney Prototype Elongated Coins. You can even view the original Disney art for the first Disney pressed penny in the world! :-) After all, it's ParkPennies!

DL0001 Mickey Mouse Rays horizontal souvenir pressed penny or elongated coin image. [Updated again 6-2022] DISNEYLAND ®, Mickey Mouse head with rays, © DISNEY, short grip, dot border, large image. Design is similar to DN0001, DL0005 and DL0007 - DL0007a. Placed onstage around June of 1987. Last variation, the DL0001a was retired around October of 1987. (This Disneyland pressed coin number made with the possibly now canceled #DLP0001.0.0, The very first onstage Disneyland Park coin die in its original first state and paired with a blank reverse die.) The DL0001 short grip or "no-mod" coin was re-confirmed as an onstage coin in 2021 after a thorough investigation and a preponderance of evidence which included but was not limited to provenance / history, old notes, early Lotus 123 spreadsheets and a review of several examples of the DL0001x from multiple sources. Additionally, an early example of the DL0001 short grip was found with a note on it confirming it was the coin Robert and Anastasia Hoff (ParkPennies Boomers) purchased circa 1994. The coin was acquired from Claude Hartman a longtime Disneyana collector and friend. He often offered Disneyland elongated coins for sale at the NFFC Disneyana Shows that he had pressed at the park. At the time, he was experimenting with an "antique" coin finish and had some sample coins, including the DL0001 at his bourse table. The purchase of this DL0001 Short Grip from Claude was a memorable purchase as it cost more than any coin we had purchased to date... $8.00. Due to its "great value" the coin was stored separately for decades. :-)
DL0001a "mid-mod": Same as DL0001 with a slight modification / lengthening of the coin grip. This coin variation was added to the guide in March of 2021 for "advanced collector" reference / attribution as there are three known states of the DL0001, the unmodified DL0001 "short grip" or "no-mod", the slightly modified coin grip DL0001a "Mid-Mod" and the DL0001a "full-mod", fully modified coin grip variation. (This Disneyland pressed coin number made with the possibly now canceled #DLP0001.1.0, The very first onstage Disneyland Park obverse elongated coin die in its first modification or "1" state / variation after the "slightly enhanced coin grip" was added, paired with a blank "0" reverse coin die.)
DL0001a "full-mod": The terminal die state, same as DL0001 except with a significant modification / lengthening of the coin grip. (This Disneyland pressed coin number made with the possibly now canceled #DLP0001.2.0, The very first onstage Disneyland Park obverse elongated coin die in its second modification or "2" state / variation after the "enhanced coin grip" was added, paired with a blank "0" reverse coin die.)
Please see: Detail comparison of DL0001 coin grips.

The DL0001 pressed penny is acknowledged as the first on-stage Disney elongated coin of any type, at any Disney park in the world. Offered at The Disneyland Resort, Anaheim, in June of 1987. (The DL0001 and DL0002 were probably placed on-stage the same day and probably taken off stage in October 1987 to make way for the DL0003 and DL0004. Please note that over time coin die grip notch modifications and die wear can be used to identify earlier vs. later examples.) Die and penny press machine by Centek, coin design by Gene Calmelat. This style of image is often called "Mickey Rays", "Mickey Sunburst", or "Mickey Sunburst". The early dies were reportedly too soft for the unusually high use at the park. They were also vulnerable to damage*. Subsequently, the DL0001 and DL0002 dies were returned to Centek and replaced with harder, smaller DL0005 and DL0006 dies featuring 1/8" smaller engraved images. (*Per Robert Hoff's 1990s interviews with Tim Prize, a founder of Centek, as well as discussions with a longtime Disneyland Cast Member. )
In a January 2010 an eBay auction by "Jeff" of a DL0001 short grip coin type was offered and described as: "Here is the very rare first pressed penny made for Disneyland by Centek out of Wheat Ridge, Colorado in 1986. I was part of the ownership group at that time and know that that there are probably just a handful of these coins still floating around. Best of luck to the lucky collector who ends up with this rare coin." The existence of this early shorter grip DL0001 variation was first reported by well-known collector Alan S. in 2007. (Before 2007, variations in coin grip length were not noticed / considered.) It appears, as this die aged, the coin grip was modified so that the coin die could better catch the cents to be pressed. The very hard to find original die configuration, featuring a short, unmodified grip has been given guide number DL0001. The also scarce, but, more often seen DL0001 variation with a slightly modified coin grip has been given guide number DL0001a "mid-mod" and the DL0001 variation with a full modification of the coin grip has been given guide number DL0001a "full-mod". Of interest, a DL0001a Nickel, an off-denomination test roll or sample coin, was auctioned via eBay in the late 1990s for a little over $800.00. As of 2021, no additional public sales of this nickel variation are known.
Note: When attributing this die vs. the DN0001, DL0005, and DL0007 - DL0007a, look for a larger size image and a "ray" that touches the bottom of the "D" in Disneyland is complete from border to Mickey's ear.

However, this is a later version of the DL0002 that has been modified and features a coin grip on both the right and left of the coin design. The second / left "start slot" or "grip" was used to catch the DL0002a coin and press it from left to right verses the DL0002 which is pressed from right to left and has only one coin grip. We believe this to be the second and last coin die state of this early Disney elongated coin. Accordingly, pending establishment of the coin's onstage status, this coin has been provisionally listed as the DL0002a. Our thanks to the well-known Disney elongated coin collector, Mark B., for sharing his find. DL0007 Retired Mickey Rays pressed penny or elongated coin image. DISNEYLAND ® , Mickey Mouse head with rays, © DISNEY, small image, thin rays, unmodified gripper slot. Possibly replaced the DL0005 in the very early 1990s. After grip modification, this die became the DL0007a. The DL0007 coin die experienced several changes over its life. The first was the apparent lengthening of the gripper slot. (The coin grip modification was originally believed to have taken place before the machine was placed onstage. However, modified coin grip examples are now known to have been pressed onstage.) Also evident in some examples, the die tended to clog with metal from coins as they were pressed. This is most noticeable with the ray at the 2 o’clock position, which is often faint or missing altogether. After the coin grip modification, this die was damaged by a hard coin or slug, which left an arc imprint on the coin. (This Disneyland pressed coin number made with the possibly now canceled #DLP0007.0.0 obverse elongated coin die in its original "0" state / variation, paired with a blank "0" reverse coin die, paired with a blank "0" reverse coin die.) Please note: The DL0007, DL0007a and a few other coins of this same era, were sometimes salvaged from recovered wishing well coins that were held by a Cast Member, Richard H., who had won bags of mostly foreign coins at Disneyland Resort Cash Control auctions over the years. He held and then sold these coins to "a collector" :-) around the turn of the century. Larger pressed penny image in frame or window # 1   2   3

However, over time the arc faded away producing examples with varying degrees of visible damage, from prominent to nearly undetectable. Definitive proof of this coin's onstage date still evades us. However, early 1990s is probably a safe estimate. The busy location and popular design made this coin a popular choice. Retired mid 1995 after just plain waring out. This die is sometimes called "Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse in the ’03 Car" because the image is reminiscent of the Main Street Parade in which Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse rode in a replica of a 1903 car. This popular pressed penny die was also the last to occupy one of the two original Disneyland single die penny press machines and spent most if not all of its life inside the Main Street Penny Arcade. Trusted sources and supporting facts indicate that the single die machine with this die and pressing mechanism, was then sold as part of a scrap auction(!) Off stage mid-1995. The "filled" portion of Mickey’s hat, and other areas of loss within the die engraving, were caused by metal failure, fracture, crumbling. The degree of "filling" varies from a slight amount early in the die's failure to completely filled at the time of the die's retirement. Pristine, no loss examples of the coin are scarce. This coin is from the same die and machine as the DL0010, and is also similar to the DN0006 prototype coin. Early vs. Late Pirates of the Caribbean pressed pennies
DL0011 Retired Pirates of the Caribbean pressed penny or elongated coin image. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, pirate on cannon, © DISNEY DISNEYLAND ® classic bead or dot border. Probably placed on stage around 1989 and retired July 18, 2004 to make way for the Magical Milestones set. (Previous estimates of onstage dates were narrowed thanks to notes taken by the Wooten family.) This has been a long-lived and popular coin die. Due to the number of coins rolled the coin image has changed from very clear early rolls to rather blurred rolls in 1998 and after. (Pass your mouse pointer over the coin image to see two different states of coin die wear; click to see a larger image.) There was only one known die with this image. We could not list an "A" variation of this coin or a second state for the die because of the nature of this gradual, transitional, progressive long term wear. Avid collectors are encouraged to search for an "early" sharply detailed example of this coin for their collections. This single play or single die penny press machine was retired in 2005 when most single play machines were exchanged for three play machines, most of which then offered Magical Milestones coins at first. (This Disneyland pressed coin number made with the possibly now canceled #DLP0011.0.0 obverse elongated coin die in its original "0" state / variation, paired with a blank "0" reverse coin die.) Estimated onstage in 1989 and retired in Oct 1995. Single die machine. (This Disneyland pressed coin number made with the possibly now canceled #DLP0012.0.0 obverse elongated coin die in its original "0" state / variation, paired with a blank "0" reverse coin die.)
Note: This Disneyland "Land" opened in 1972 as Country Bear Jamboree, in 1986 the land was renamed Country Bear Playhouse. The Country Bear Playhouse coins, DL0012 and DL0020 would be correct given when they were onstage. However, the circa 1996 three die pressed penny machine also located inside the playhouse offered coins inscribed "Country Bear Jamboree". Some have said this was an error. However, the DL0086, DL0087, and DL0088 could have been a 10 year anniversary homage to the name change in 1986? The Country Bear Playhouse kept the new name from 1986 to closing in September of 2001. Larger pressed penny image in frame or window # 1   2   3

(Previous estimates of onstage dates were narrowed thanks to notes taken by the Wooten family.) For a time, this was one of the machines that were moved out to the walkways before the park opened and taken in after closing. The placement of this machine during that time was in front of Teddy Barra's, near the gift shop. Later this single die machine moved to a permanent location inside Teddy Barra's. (This Disneyland pressed coin number made with the possibly now canceled #DLP0013.0.0 obverse elongated coin die in its original "0" state / variation, paired with a blank "0" reverse coin die.) This classic single die penny press machine was often found rolled out into the area between Teddy Barra's Swingin' Arcade and Splash Mountain in Bear Country / Critter Country. TOMORROWLAND, Astronaut Mickey Mouse and StarSpeeder 3000, © DISNEY DISNEYLAND ® , classic bead or dot border. The date this coin was first placed onstage has yet to be confirmed. However, it was most likely around 1989 based on the opening of Star Tours in 1987 and casual notes taken by fellow collectors. Off stage November 24, 1999, returned February 4, 2000, retired November 4, 2002. Replaced by DL0186. (This Disneyland pressed coin number made with the possibly now canceled #DLP0014.0.0 obverse elongated coin die in its original "0" state / variation, paired with a blank "0" reverse coin die.)
This single die penny press was located for a good part of its life at the Starcade in Tomorrowland. When this die was replaced by the DL0186, the penny press case was "plused up" with paint and graphics, not long after that, the Starcade was leased out to NAMCO and sadly the location was lost. A rumored Space Mountain pressed penny never made it to this machine or location. Larger pressed penny image in frame or window # 1   2   3

Does this penny press marquee bring back some memories? :-)

Single die machine. One of the last coins listed in the early guides. The coin style says ~1989, but, we need a better on and off stage date. The onstage date is probably 1988-9 when Bear Country was renamed Critter Country. Maybe a machine picture can be found? (This Disneyland pressed coin number made with the possibly now canceled #DLP0016.0.0 obverse elongated coin die in its original "0" state / variation, paired with a blank "0" reverse coin die.) This penny press was most likely off the beaten trail and not onstage long. The newer version also illustrates the transition from a "flat" engraving style to a "3D" style. Of all the early Disneyland pressed coins, the "No Turtle" Critter Country pressed penny is often a challenge to find. At one time there was a sign with the same "no turtle" graphics greeted guests in Critter Country. Larger pressed penny image in frame or window # 1   2   3

DL0017 Retired Disneyland Hotel Monorail pressed penny or elongated coin image. DISNEYLAND HOTEL and Monorail, © Picture of the Disneyland Hotel and the Monorail, classic bead or dot border. Same coin as the DR0010. Probably onstage inside the gates of Disneyland from around 1995 to late 1996 early 1997, then moved outside the gates of Disneyland to the Disneyland Hotel area where it was reported onstage in October of 1997 as the DR0010 and finally retired to make way for the DR0079 by March 4, 2004. (This Disneyland pressed coin number made with the possibly now canceled #DLP0017.0.0 obverse elongated coin die in its original "0" state / variation, paired with a blank "0" reverse coin die.) This Monorail pressed penny was onstage for a long time and placed in a few different locations. The single die penny press machine that pressed this coin dated back to the early days of Disneyland penny presses. Over the years, it was located inside the Disneyland Park, a few different locations outside the Disneyland Park in the Disneyland Hotel complex e.g. the Tinker Bell Toy Shop, The Fantasia Gift Shop, the breezeway near the old hotel monorail stop, and in the Neon Cactus Sports Bar. So this vagabond pressed penny is listed as both a Disneyland Park DL0017 coin and a Disneyland Resort DR0010. On a personal note, this is one of my favorite coins. It not only was one of the longest lived penny press designs, but it moved from inside the park to outside... But, most of all it reminds me, and maybe you too, of the fun days years ago when we could buy a ticket at the Disneyland Hotel boarding platform and ride the monorail into the park. :-) Larger pressed penny image in frame or window # 1   2   3

Replaced the DL0015 as the DL0019 inside the park circa 1995 then in May of 1995 moved outside the park as the DR0019 and retired in November of 1998. (Previous estimates of onstage dates were narrowed thanks to notes taken by the Wooten family.) Single die machine. (The prefix DL = Pressed Coin Inside the gates of The Disneyland Park, DR= Pressed coin outside park gates, but, on property in the Disneyland Resort, Anaheim. Purely a coincidence that the DL and then DR numbers were the same, 0019. ) (This Disneyland pressed coin number made with the possibly now canceled #DLP0019.0.0 obverse elongated coin die in its original "0" state / variation, paired with a blank "0" reverse coin die.) This machine moved from inside the park as the DL0019 to outside the park, as the DR0019 and was placed in a few different locations around the Disneyland hotel before retirement. Editor's note: We are often reminded that the preferred numismatic term is "Elongated Coins". However, as the rebellious, risk taking, devil may care ParkPennies.com contributors that we are, temptation often gets the better of us. As a result, you may see the more casual, terms like: stamped coins, pressed coins, pressed nickels, pressed dimes, pressed quarters, smashed pennies, flattened pennies, crushed pennies, squashed pennies, rolled pennies, mashed pennies, stamped pennies, smushed pennies, stretched pennies, memory pennies, keepsake pennies, flattened pennies, and souvenir coin medallions to describe these fun pressed coin souvenirs. :-) Here are some pages about the often asked questions of How many pressed coins are at Disney? and How much do pressed coins cost? Just for fun, here is a page with a bit of a different take on Pressed Coins Facts and Fiction with tips on how different coins press, cool pressed coin jewelry, early penny presses...
