Coin Die Variations... Treasure Hunting!
Which ones are Treasures?

Mickey Rays pressed coin nickel, DL0076   Mickey Rays pressed coin nickel, DL0225

Treasure hunting... is that why you're here at ParkPennies? :-) Well, treasure hunting for die variations is a common topic in emails, so what say we talk about them? We know that two coins from the same die will probably look a lot alike. Many times the die has changed very slightly and is given a suffix of "a" like the DL0007a. Sometimes the die changes a bit more and is given a new guide number, like the DL0021 no © / DL0061 © die variation. However, as insignificant as these differences may seem, they can make a significant difference. You may know or be an advanced collector that often goes treasure hunting. Looking for Disney elongated coins at online auctions, coin shows... looking for those hard to find coin die variation treasures that others might overlook? If you are, you know finding one of those treasures can be a very rewarding and fun part of the hobby.

So, what are some of the coin die variations to look for? Well, one variation is listed on this very guide page, the Mickey Rays nickel. One of my favorites! (The variant coins are shown to the left and right of this article.) They look much as we might see them in person. Do they look the same? Even if one can spot the small differences, are their values about the same? Which one is of greater value? ParkPennies.com provides information to help you compare the two. Matter of fact, the guides tell us that the Mickey Rays DL0076 (left) is a vintage , retired, collectable pressed nickel that was onstage at Disneyland for about seven years. However, the guides tell us the Mickey Rays DL0225, which was onstage for only a few days and pressed by very few collectors, is definitely the treasure!

Want to research more treasures? Here is a page with some Disneyland elongated coin variations with links to more guide pages. It is one of the resources we hope you'll find useful along with our many guides and news pages. Happy hunting! :-) Boomer

Price increase for DL0213-215 carousel pressed quarter setA Sign of the Times Pressed Quarters $1.25.

Why, when I was a kid, a DISNEYLAND pressed quarter cost only $1.00!    Really Grandpa?

Yes, many of us remember the early 1990s when the first pressed quarters graced the stage of Disneyland. The price charged for a pressed quarter was only 75 cents plus the quarter to be pressed, a dollar. Since that time, some coin press machine prices outside the park have increased. Matter of fact, today outside the park, we see many pressed quarter machines at $1.25 and some pressed *penny* machines charging a dollar. Readers who have visited Walt Disney World have seen Disney quarter press machine prices of $1.00 + .25 for sometime now.... So, I guess it really wasn't much of a surprise when the Disneyland Nightmare Before Christmas pressed quarter machine price was increased by 25 cents in 2010. And now in April of 2011, the Carousel pressed quarter set followed suit to what must be the new Disneyland pressed quarter pricing, $1.25. But, before I start ranting about this change, I must admit that a Disney souvenir even at this new price, is still... ah er... a refreshingly welcome Disneyland value. :-) So, I'm going to make the most of what may soon be... the good old days.

Editor's note: We are often reminded that the preferred numismatic term is "Elongated Coins". However, as the rebellious, risk taking, devil may care ParkPennies.com contributors that we are, temptation often gets the better of us. As a result, you may see the more casual, terms like: stamped coins, pressed coins, pressed nickels, pressed dimes, pressed quarters, smashed pennies, flattened pennies, crushed pennies, squashed pennies, rolled pennies, mashed pennies, stamped pennies, smushed pennies, stretched pennies, memory pennies, keepsake pennies, flattened pennies, and souvenir coin medallions to describe these fun pressed coin souvenirs. :-) Here are some pages about the often asked questions of How many pressed coins are at Disney? and How much do pressed coins cost? Just for fun, here is a page with a bit of a different take on Pressed Coins Facts and Fiction with tips on how different coins press, cool pressed coin jewelry, early penny presses... Happy Collecting! Boomer and the folks at ParkPennies.com :-)
