The Nightmare Before Christmas Collection Debuts

Haunted Mansion and NBC quarters pressNightmare Before Christmas, Sally 2001
2001 brought the first of a very popular series, the Nightmare Before Christmas pressed quarter elongated coin collection. The quarters usually are placed onstage seasonally in the New Orleans Square coffin themed penny press machine, which they share on a rotational basis with the Haunted Mansion quarter sets. Surely one of the top collections, for Haunted Mansion, Halloween, Bat's Day, and elongated coin fans. Often placed onstage around the time of the Haunted Mansion Christmas Event (overlay). Read more about the NBC quarter set and see them all... on the Nightmare Before Christmas collection page. You may also like to see the associated Haunted Mansion quarters collection.

Detail comparison of UBOC onstage and prototype coins. Detail comparison of UBOC onstage and prototype coins. As you can see, they are very similar. The top coin representative of the prototype variations of the UBOC coins. Most of the engraving is inside the dot border of the coin. This resulted in a loss of detail and a poor quality coin would have been the result. Not something the good folks at The Penny Men accept. So, the coin artwork was reworked by extending the train image past the dot border. A very nice coin was the result as shown with the production or onstage "DL" coin at the bottom.

UBOC border dot placement DL0153-56 / DN0025-28. UBOC border dot placement DL0153-56 / DN0025-28. Dot locations help in attributing the DL0153-56 / DN0025-28 coin sets. The UBOC elongated coins were pressed via a high quality hand crank machine that featured a die roller with four separate engravings. In the case of both the onstage and prototype coins, all four engravings on the die roller were nearly identical, save a larger single dot placed uniquely in the border of each coin as shown in the adjacent picture.

Editor's note: We are often reminded that the preferred numismatic term is "Elongated Coins". However, as the rebellious, risk taking, devil may care ParkPennies.com contributors that we are, temptation often gets the better of us. As a result, you may see the more casual, terms like: stamped coins, pressed coins, pressed nickels, pressed dimes, pressed quarters, smashed pennies, flattened pennies, crushed pennies, squashed pennies, rolled pennies, mashed pennies, stamped pennies, smushed pennies, stretched pennies, memory pennies, keepsake pennies, flattened pennies, and souvenir coin medallions to describe these fun pressed coin souvenirs. :-) Here are some pages about the often asked questions of How many pressed coins are at Disney? and How much do pressed coins cost? Just for fun, here is a page with a bit of a different take on Pressed Coins Facts and Fiction with tips on how different coins press, cool pressed coin jewelry, early penny presses... Happy Collecting! Boomer and the folks at ParkPennies.com :-)
