is often called the "Straw Hat Mickey" or "Nifty Nineties Mickey".

Vance Fowler of The Cimeter Group hoped that an agreement covering this coin in a Cimeter machine would be received and accepted by Disneyland. David P., a relative of the Cimeter CEO and business partner eventually presented the DN0003. The DN0002 / DN0003 artwork is well executed and in high relief. (For examples featuring the dates 1928 to the left of Mickey and 1988 to right, please refer to DN0003.) Examples pressed circa 1986-7 on both copper and zinc cents are known to exist and most likely number less than 10 in total. Die status has been reported as open by two trusted sources.
Extremely scarce as of this 2020 update. Reported as held by only a few advanced collectors as of 2020. (This

Vance Fowler's company, The Cimeter Group, proposed this coin / machine to Disneyland Management via a California based company representative. However, according to a principal, negotiations broke down over Disney demands and the machine was never placed onstage. The artwork is well executed especially for its time and done in high relief. (For examples without the dates 1928 to the left of Mickey and 1988 to right, please refer to DN0002.) In 2000, die status was reported to
Robert Hoff of ParkPennies by a trusted knowledgeable source as lost / destroyed. Again in 2005 and 2012, this die was confirmed as lost / destroyed by the original owner / engraver. Known examples of this coin are scarce. In 2006, a picture of the left and right
prototype Disneyland penny press marquees from the original machine , each featuring a DN0003 was made public via an email to select collectors. A few additional examples are known.
Extremely scarce. Mr. Fowler has stated that "not more than a dozen or so were run". Possibly six of them are known to have survived as of this update in 2015.

DL0002, DL0006 . Circa 1989. No stampbacked examples known. (No Disney elongated coins pressed before2004 are known to have stampbacks.) Many
small differences make this a hard coin to spot. Key is the double outlined guitar which is mostly solid on the
DL0006 and the heavy point of the "D" in Disneyland. Due to
the few known examples of DN0005 and the lack of any on

Cluttered artwork has been suggested as the reason this coin was never on-stage. Still it is one of my favorites. Very scarce in early years. Since the turn of the century, several different denominational variations have been reported although in very limited numbers. However, still very hard to find in 2020. Die status is unknown. Robert Hoff of ParkPennies.com by a longtime Electro Mechanical Shop Cast Member now retired, a penny press machine was planned for placement in Toontown. However per recollections of people close to the project at the time, a simple design
developed into a very nice, but, over budget animated penny press design and was abandoned. This penny design dates from that period of time / project. Some years later, a conventional design three play dime press machine was placed in ToonTown, the

Not closely similar to any other elongated coin, prototype or onstage. No stampbacked examples known. (No Disney elongated coins pressed before 2004 are known to have stampbacks.) Fantasmic! premiered (soft opening) in the Fall of 1991. Official start date of the show was Spring (March) 1992. Note that this coin has Disneyland © rather than the usual © DISNEY. Cast Member interviews by
Robert Hoff of ParkPennies.com and other strong evidence support that this coin was offered from a single die machine. (An image of the

Disneyland "Penny Art" pressed nickels , an interesting, but, hard to find set. Interviews with Cast Members and related research by
Robert Hoff of ParkPennies.com support the
long held belief that these "Penny Art" dies were engraved as "penny-sized" coin dies in error. A Cast Member that was close to this project at the time, in the mid 1990s, stated that when these dies arrived they were tested in a machine set up and designed, for the first time to "intensionally" press nickels. :-) However, the smaller than expected penny-sized die images which were supplied left an unacceptable blank space
at the end of the rolled coin. So, corrected, dies with larger images were ordered before the
                                              machine was placed on-stage.
The machine when placed onstage became the first Disney coin press in world to press nickels.
Per the best information available to us to date in 2020, less than a dozen "penny art" sets are believed to be in the hands of collectors. (We have seen coins trade hands. But, to the best of our knowledge, no new coins have been offered in many years. Reports of incomplete sets persist. We do not believe an equal numbers of each coin in this set of three were made. Examples are also known
to exist on non-native or off-denomination coins such as cents.
                                              Die status is unknown.

The 1996 New Year date was an easy to make design error. The coin should have read 1997. Well, it was 1996, the first year of a dated Seasonal Nickel Set, and it was New
Years... and there wasn't a Happy New Year coin made for 1996... :-)

of coins were all pressed on a single four image die shaft. Each has a train image that is
difficult to recognize. It did not even come close to meeting the high standards of the penny press company that was commissioned to engrave the dies and manufacture the machine. So, a replacement die roll of DL0153-DL0156 was engraved which reduced the focal image to
just the locomotive and tender while increasing the image size.
The original ring die of four images, used to press the prototype set, was reported around November of 2000 and later confirmed destroyed by the engraver / owner as well as a trusted source.
The finished hand crank penny press machine, with the new, corrected dies held a place of honor in the UBOC Bank, Main Street, Disneyland for about two years where

Based on early coin examples, the penny press machine placed on-stage outside
Bonanza Outfitters on 7/16/04, vended the DL0249 coin as the button "C" selection from the very start. However, the original Rivers of America pressed coin machine's marquee displayed this "DN0034 image" and only later a "DL0249 image" as the button "C" selection. So what became of the original coin? According to trusted sources, a die which matched the original DN0034 marquee artwork, was proposed and rejected. Given the original machine marquee was made using the DN0034 artwork, we are told and agree that DN0034 coins must have been pressed as proofs / marquee samples etc. even though the die was later replaced. Therefore, we have reserved elongated coin collection guide number DN0034 for any coins representing this early prototype die. And yes, it appears another Indiana Jones style adventure awaits those seeking this coin. Update: In 2010 confirmation, via scans of this coin, became available to ParkPennies.com readers.
