DN0054 Haunted Mansion Arcade Shop Prototype QuarterDN0054 Haunted Mansion Arcade Shop Prototype Quarter. Horizontal pressed quarter. DISNEYLAND ® RESORT, THE HAUNTED MANSION, Picture of the gated mansion with a full moon overhead. This die has no "e" for Eurolink and appears to be an etched image as were the Arcade Shop dies of the time. We believe it to be a Shop coin that was never placed onstage or used for a Cast Member event. Looks much like the DL0520. Reverse: Blank or "Retired". (This Disneyland pressed coin number made with the possibly now canceled #DNP0051.0.0 obverse elongated coin die in its original "0" state / variation, paired with a blank "0" reverse coin die.) DISNEY'S GRAND CALIFORNIAN HOTEL ® Chip 'N Dale near peanut half shells, 2006 ©DISNEY, dot border, "e". This is the Eurolink engraved predecessor to the controversial DR0099 penny. Chip does not have a "controversy" in this first variation. Rumored that this die-was not tempered and had to be returned for replacement. The replacement die was the similar, but infamous onstage DR0099. No stampbacked examples confirmed. DISNEY'S GRAND CALIFORNIAN HOTEL ® Chip 'N Dale near peanut half shells, 2006 ©DISNEY, dot border, NO "e". Engraved in-house by the Disneyland Arcade Shop. It is not clear if this DN0043 if used, would have been the possible Arcade Shop contender for the initial Chip N Dale, possibly the replacement for the first, soft die or for the controversial die. Not closely similar to any other elongated coin, prototype or onstage. Very scarce. Reverse: Blank or Retired. This prototype coin was first reported until 2023 and known only by this one example. (Our thanks for this report. Given these coins were never onstage and only a few test coins may have been pressed, discovery / reporting are often a challenge. Without the most welcome reports by ParkPennies visitors, many of these coins could never be known or appreciated by the collecting world.) The coin may have been engraved by Cast Members in the Arcade Shop / Electro Mechanical Shop, especially given that the style and time frame is similar to the DN0071. Of interest, this design is very similar to the DL0384 nickel. In keeping with the Disney tradition of providing a better quality souvenir, in 2004, Disneyland was the first Disney park to introduce stampbacks. The DL0251 was the first on-stage die to be matched to a reverse. This particular DL0251 appears to be evidence of early "back die" experiments with its unusual DL0251DNR Disneyland Neverland reverse. In keeping with the Disney tradition of providing a better quality souvenir, in 2004, Disneyland introduced the DL0251 back stamped nickel. With this introduction, Disneyland became the first Disney Park to ever offer two sided elongated coins, also known as "Mules". This coin appears to be evidence of early experiments with varied "back dies", "back shafts" or "stampback" engravings with its DL0251DNR reverse. Note: This elongated coin die combination, obverse / reverse, is listed as a prototype vs. test roll / Neverland reverse because the coin would have been issued as engraved if not for the needed last minute addition of names. We do not feel this reverse was experimental, a test, or a "progressive pressing".
