Pressed Penny Error Set!

A quick look at the Disneyland Resort Hollywood Tower of Terror Hotel pressed penny sets above might not warrant a second look. After all, the Hollywood Tower Hotel is in the Disneyland ® Resort. But, The Hollywood Tower Hotel, AKA, The Hollywood Tower of Terror is not in Disneyland, it’s in Disney’s California Adventure™! As they say, there you have it! The latest, coolest Disneyland error coin set yet!

As you can see, these newly disclosed error coins are much like. However, the error set, says "Disneyland" rather than "Disney’s California Adventure". (Click on these catalog numbers to see higher resolution coin images above DN0031, DN0032, DN0033, CA0053 CA0054, CA0055) Error coins like this recent set remind this collector of the DalmatiOns set, which was later replaced by the DalmatiAns set some years ago. Needless to say, error coins are very prized additions to most any Disneyland collection today.

6/16/04 This previously unlisted set of Disneyland Hollywood Tower Hotel error coins were just disclosed via an eBay auction. Feverish work by Lou Smith and yours truly has brought ParkPennies.com readers background, coin scans, and detailed descriptions in less than 24 hours from the time these coins were first reported. (Update: The sale of the three individual zinc cents, that made up the rare error set, brought a total of more than $1,400.00.) (Another auction of similar coins, also good zinc rolls, closed on eBay 01/24/07 for a total of ~$1,475.00.)

08/01/07 Over the past few months, a cache of probably a half-dozen sets of the Tower of Terror pressed penny error coins have been sold privately at historically low prices. Most were resold via eBay. All sales known to us were of zinc cents, save one copper set. Prices were depressed as surprised collectors shied away from the unexpected number of coins. As of this writing, it appears that the recently offered sets have been exhausted and found new, long term homes for the most part. As of 2018, there have been no additional fire sales of these, now hard to find again elongated coins.

Editor’s note: Many advanced collectors know of what Disneyland calls "proof coins", coins that have been pressed and offered for sale as evidence of a retired die cancellation program or policy. However, a policy for rejected dies has not, to our knowledge, been demonstrated. Therefore, as of mid 2018, ParkPennies.com must assume these rejected dies are available / open for use somewhere.
