Disneyland Themed Unofficial, "No Copyright"
Pressed Coin "Tributes"
The "DW" Disneyland Wannabe Elongated Coin Guide references very collectible fun Disneyland-ish "Tribute", "Unofficial", "In-the-style-of", "Wannabe" or er... ah... yes, even fake elongated coins or pressed coin / token souvenirs known to us. Entries need not be imitations, copies, or fakes. Yet each, in some way, must clearly appear to be associated with Disneyland USA pressed coins or tokens and not, in our opinion, issued or licensed by Disney or pressed on any Disney Resort property. Souvenirs listed must the word "Disneyland" often via "nominative fair use" and/or they must have easily and clearly identifiable Disneyland images, properties, and/or trademark(s). The elongated coins / tokens must also reasonably be assumed to make reference to Disneyland Anaheim, not solely Walt Disney World or other Disney Resort. Additionally, any pressed coin listed cannot, by definition, meet the criteria for inclusion in any other ParkPennies.com guide. Some of these pressed coins have wonderful, heartwarming, legitimate stories behind them, others don't. :-)
We believe there are many more elongated coins that could be listed in this guide. The total number of coins that could be listed here, that are still unknown to us, is um... unknown to us. Please contact ParkPennies about any additional coins you may have that have not yet been listed here so you can have credit for the discovery and the coin / token can be shared here with fellow collectors as these coins have been shared with you.
Please excuse our informality. Although we are (repeatedly) told the preferred numismatic term is "Elongated Coins!", as rebellious, devil-may-care ParkPennies.com contributors we are known to occasionally use more casual, fun terms like: pressed, flattened, crushed, squashed, stretched, memory, keepsake, rolled, mashed, smashed, stamped, squished, smushed, and souvenir to describe these fun penny (cent) treasures. Happy Collecting, Boomer
DW0001 Retired PANART 1970 Horizontal elongated coin or pressed penny image. PANART 1970, originally affixed to a Disneyland Hotel post card to announce an event held at the Disneyland Hotel on October 3, 1970. The earliest known elongated coin to be associated with Disneyland. A convention of the Society of Philatelists and Numismatics was held at the Disneyland Hotel on October 3, 1970. Commemorating this event an elongated penny was attached to a Disneyland Hotel post card, stamped with a SPAN logo, given a 5-cent stamp, hand canceled and sent to convention participants. Each PNC was serial numbered. Approximately 500 postcards ( #55390-C / Nickel Tour Postcard Guide Number NT1132) were made as reported to us by a post card collector familiar with the original issue. Pressed Pennies / Elongated Coins
DW0002 Retired Bob's Big Boy vertical elongated coin or pressed penny image. BOB’S BIG BOY ACROSS FROM DISNEYLAND, CALIFORNIA, Big Boy logo ® in center, dot border. The penny press machine was located across the street from the main entrance to Disneyland in the Bob’s restaurant circa 1986 to 1988. (Ground floor inside the Howard Johnson's located near the south east corner of the Harbor Boulevard and Santa Ana Freeway intersection. The intersection was later expanded around the turn of the century, greatly changing the intersection and hiding the location that once was a Bob's Big Boy Restaurant.) Due to the similarity between this coin and DW0003 it is thought that both machines were owned by the same individual/organization, Eurolink Design, and placed in operation and removed about the same time. The original machine pressed only cents. Off-denomination coins were reported to us after the machine was removed / Bob's Big Boy was closed. Only the elongated cent is native to this group of Bob's Big Boy elongated coins. We have included the nickel and dime as examples of non-native coins that may be of interest to Advanced Collectors. Many if not most "DW" collection coins have been pressed on non-native denomination coins. DW0004 Retired Horizontal HOLIDAY INN - ANAHEIM ACROSS FROM DISNEYLAND elongated coin or pressed penny image. HOLIDAY INN - ANAHEIM ACROSS FROM DISNEYLAND, castle rooftops and flags. This coin, is believed to have been pressed by a single die Centek machine located inside an arcade room at the Holiday Inn Hotel (later operating under the names of Radison Hotel and then The Red Lyon Hotel) at 1850 South Harbor Blvd. Anaheim, CA., near the intersection of Harbor Boulevard and Katella Ave., across from Disneyland circa 1986-1988.
Low foot traffic at the location and limited machine in service time may be why the coin is not often seen today. Pictured is wide grip variation, small grip variation is known. Off-denomination elongated coins are known to exist. Ewell Gunther's Americana Covers PNC's offered cent, nickel, dime, and quarter elongated coins in the caches. The very limited number of PNC's issued was mostly cents and progressively limited as the denomination of the enclosed elongated coin increased from cent to quarter.
Some caches or presentation envelopes were signed by Joann Killingsworth, Disneyland's first Snow White and "First Lady" at the park opening in 1955.
PNC issue size, to best of the notes I took when speaking with Mr. Ewell Gunther: Cents - 50 with and 50 without JoAnn Killingsworth's autograph. (50 had Disney Dollars on the back of the cache.)
Nickels - 10 Dimes - 5 Quarters - 1 . Related: The ParkPennies Philatelic Numismatic Combination, PNC, page.

Rolled by Ray Dillard for Jess Kirby on cents, nickels, dimes, quarters,
halves and Susan B. dollars. In addition the die has been rolled on
foreign coins, brass blanks, etc. First used in 1987. Later rolls have
been made, often with stained reverses, on many different types of coins.
On July 18th, 2018 correspondence from the well-known elongated coin collector, James McNally who is also known for his www.zzzcoins.com web site, was received. Jim stated that he had approached Mr. Ray Dillard and contracted with him to have 100 DW0006 nickels and 40 Japanese yen coins pressed from the original DW0006 die. Please note: Most all Disney themed elongated pressed coin dies will eventually be lost to time. However, without evidence to the contrary, dies, especially dies that have not been retired / canceled, should be assumed "open" and therefore could possibly press additional coins. KNOTT'S, DISNEYLAND, SO CAL TEC MEET 2002, LEGOLAND CALIFORNIA, UNIVERSAL STUDIOS HOLLYWOOD, SIX FLAGS MAGIC MOUNTAIN, JD near the grip notch for Jim Dundon, the prolific engraver in his signature classic small dot / bead border. Die designed by Lou Smith and engraved by Jim Dundon May 2002 for the Fall 2002 TEC mini-meet in Southern California held on December 7, 2002. Die owner reported 200 made. This coin set was originally issued only to TEC members at the meet and were only pressed on US cent coins. When asked if more or less than 10 sets had been rolled, the roller stated that "less than ten sets" of nickels, dimes, and quarters had been rolled in total, that the dies were retied and would be canceled. DW0024 "Disneyland, Lets Go Play" horizontal pressed penny image. Stylized Disneyland castle, DISNEYLAND, LET'S GO PLAY, JD near the grip notch for Jim Dundon, the prolific engraver in his signature classic small dot / bead border. The coin, themed after the Disneyland 1997 sound bite "Let's Go Play!" was issued mainly to close collecting friends back in the early 2000s and originally pressed only on pennies. The guide listing was delayed at the request of the roller / coin die owner. (Only a placeholder for a "Let's Have Fun" coin was listed in our guides at the time.) In October of 2022, after years of intermittent badgering, the roller agreed to listing the coin and stated that less than ten sets of nickels, dimes, and quarters had been rolled in total over the years with five of those sets pressed after my most recent inquiry in the 2020s. Rumors are that the die was canceled, we will update this listing once we have confirmation. (This Disneyland pressed coin number made with the possibly now canceled#DWT0024.0.0 obverse elongated coin die in its original "0" state / variation, paired with a blank "0" reverse coin die.)
