Would the Real Matterhorn Squished Penny Please Stand Up?

This guide page mentions the coins very similar elongated coins pictured above. If you are an Advanced Collector, you might have already identified them. The first is the original onstage coin. It features the European spelling of The Matternhorn Mountain and was only onstage for a short time, about two days, before the error was caught. The second prototype coin was made using the correct Disney spelling of The Matterhorn Mountain, but wasn't ever placed in the park. The third coin was just right and happily greeted guests at the Main Street Penny Arcade for years. Here is a detailed comparison page for the DL0236, DL0250, DN0046

If you are just starting to collect these coins, from what we've seen recently, the DL0236 can be hard to find, but, the DL0250 is fairly easy. The DN0046 prototype is very hard to find in comparison and is usually only part of very advanced collections that include scarce prototype elongated coins... All this information and more in the ParkPennies.com guides. Please tell your friends, we love visitors! Happy Collecting, Boomer

DISNEYLAND ® Racer Mickey Mouse in baseball cap, helmet under his arm, AUTOPIA 2004 © DISNEY, "e" for Eurolink Design Corporation replaces the dot nearest the center of the gripper slot. Very much like the DL0232 pressed penny, (left). But, a comparison of the two coins will show the prototype DN0030 features a blurred lighting bolt on Mickey's helmet and other image differences. Circa late 2003. No stampbacked examples known. (No Disney elongated coins pressed before 2004 are known to have stampbacks.)Rumors given ParkPennies.com suggest that this die was made to fit the wrong type of machine possibly a two pin vs. four pin die. We believe the DL0232 was made as a corrected replacement. Larger prototype elongated coin image in frame or window # 1   2   3 or Giant Comparison image, or our comparison page.

Right: the similar DN0034 prototype coin without the "MARK TWAIN RIVERBOAT" inscription from our "DN" prototype guide.

Mark Twain Prototype elongated coin For comparison The DN0034 Mark Twain Riverboat NO inscription horizontal prototype elongated penny image. DISNEYLAND ® image of a stern wheeler steamboat reminiscent of Disneyland's Mark Twain Riverboat, © DISNEY. NO inscription below the ship, no border, no examples with stampbacks are known. For similar coins with the inscription "MARK TWAIN RIVERBOAT" please see the on-stage DL0249. Based on early coin examples, the penny press machine placed on-stage outside Bonanza Outfitters on 7/16/04, vended the DL0249 coin as the button "C" selection from the very start. However, the machine's marquee originally displayed this "DN0034 image" and only later a "DL0249 image" as the button "C" selection. So what became of the original coin? According to trusted sources, a die which matched the original DN0034 marquee artwork, was proposed and rejected. Given the original machine marquee was made using the DN0034 artwork, we are told and agree that DN0034 coins must have been pressed as proofs / marquee samples etc. even though the die was later replaced. Therefore, we have reserved elongated coin collection guide number DN0034 for any coins representing this early prototype die. And yes, it appears another Indiana Jones style adventure awaits those seeking this coin. Update: In 2010 confirmation, via scans of this coin, became available to ParkPennies.com readers. If your quest is successful, please do send us a scan of your find. Die status unknown. Larger prototype elongated coin image in frame or window # 1   2   3 or view our comparison image.

DL0250 Retired Matterhorn squished penny elongated coin image. DISNEYLAND ® , Corrected spelling of MATTERHORN on banner, castle pennant below, abominable snowman waist up, standing behind banner, © Disney. Replaced the similar MatterNhorn, DL0236 which was misspelled. Also similar to the DN0046 prototype coin. First on-stage 7/28/04.The machine vending this coin was last located in the Main Street Penny Arcade which closed for refurbishment on 1/04/12 and reopened on 5/02/12 without a single penny press. Although some of the machines, over time, were moved to new locations, this penny press has not been seen since 1/04/12. After a very long absence and based on a preponderance of the evidence, it is believed this set is retired. Editor's note: We are often reminded that the preferred numismatic term is "Elongated Coins". However, as the rebellious, risk taking, devil may care ParkPennies.com contributors that we are, temptation often gets the better of us. As a result, you may see the more casual, terms like: stamped coins, pressed coins, pressed nickels, pressed dimes, pressed quarters, smashed pennies, flattened pennies, crushed pennies, squashed pennies, rolled pennies, mashed pennies, stamped pennies, smushed pennies, stretched pennies, memory pennies, keepsake pennies, flattened pennies, and souvenir coin medallions to describe these fun pressed coin souvenirs. :-) Here are some pages about the often asked questions of How many pressed coins are at Disney? and How much do pressed coins cost? Just for fun, here is a page with a bit of a different take on Pressed Coins Facts and Fiction with tips on how different coins press, cool pressed coin jewelry, early penny presses...
