Why would Corey print THESE excerpts? This is NOT the kind of article
TEC
News should be printing IMHO, at least it is not what I am paying dues
to
read! This letter should have remained a letter, sent to Corey and
perhaps shared with others, but not placed in the Record of TEC. There's
an appropriate place for each type of communication, and Angelo's
concerns should be address via other letters, not through yet another
round of "us vs them" internet/TEC News missives.
I have to agree with you on this, Bert! It was bad enough reading
Angelo's hogwash about what we "should" be calling ECs, but to print one
man's negative opinion of Kathy's site was totally wrong. However, it
was printed and as I told Kathy:

One of the problems is, we're just not getting enough input for the TEC
NEWS... everyone wants to read, but few wish to write. Even suggestions
of what to write about would be helpful! If you have such suggestions,
please send them to me (massey@clark.net)... I'll gladly try and find
folks to write about specific topics.

I just received an email reiterating some of Rosoto's thoughts. I
thought I would share it with you, along with my reply to him (so that
you know exactly how I stand on the issues):

Greetings,
I, for one, refer to them as "elongated coins" most of the time but see
no need to be uppity about it... Live and let live, I always say.
First of all, there are literally thousands of collectors out there
collecting elongates from vending machines, having no idea WHAT to call
them (as there is rarely any mention of the conventional terminology on
the machines themselves). Therefore, people wind up calling them all
sorts of things... flat, squished, rolled-out, pressed, etc. because
that's what they look like, and they haven't any numismatic friends to
set them straight. In fact, several of the people hosting websites
dedicated to elongated coins under more unconventional names, had done
so before ever hearing the term "elongated coins", let alone TEC.
However, as they communicate with more serious collectors they usually
tend to adapt the more conventional terminology eventually. But in any
case, Isn't the fact that people are having fun collecting them what's
really important...no matter what they call them???
As for your fear of them becoming illegal, I really don't think you
need to worry.
First of all, the Government itself is responsible for mutilating
coins--just check out the Mint's catalog of coins with holes drilled
through them as to accommodate the mechanics of a time piece. Even
Canada has begun offering mutilated coinage of this nature. And because
of this fact, I believe that it won't be long before people will be
allowed to produce elongated coin souvenirs on Canadian coinage as well.
Secondly, every U.S. cent that is rolled into an elongated coin reduces
the National Debt...The Government knows this--It's the same concept as
offering Mint sets, or the circulating commemorative quarters that will
be issued soon... The coin goes out of circulation, yet the economy is
stimulated by the chain of revenues produced by the product(s). It's a
win-win situation for the Government.
Anyway, you asked for my thought on the topic... and that's how I feel.

I was going to post this want list, but, I'll need your help
on DIS numbers for some of them. There are two Mickey
60th's, one with a double band around the letters and one
with a single band. Also there are two "Bear Country's", one
with large letters "Disneyland" across the top and one with
smaller letters. (The size of the image is larger / smaller
also) Don't know about the POC, David Tomita listed it at
his site.

I didn't offer your catalog to the Disney archives, but, you
may want to. The are in Burbank and Disneyland can provide
their number.

Hi all,
Well, hey hey, I've got me some genuine limited edition elongates,
and guess what? They are free for the asking. A number of years back (4
or 5, I'd have to check) I got my Eagle Scout award and I had Jim Dundon
roll me a coin. I handed them out at my ceremony, but I've still got
around a hundred of the things. The subject matter is of course me, with
an Eagle and BSA and the date on the coin. I wrote an article about it
way back and the coin was pictured in TEC News.
Anyway, all this talk of "limited editions" got me to thinking,
and hey, Jim still probably has the die and could churn out hundreds more
of the things, but why?! So, I've got loads of 'em and if you want one,
just send me a SASE and I'll pop one in (and heck, for your trouble and
your stamp I'll throw in at least one of my other duplicates) and drop it
in the mail. I ask for a SASE only because I'm too lazy to address the
envelopes, plus it would end up that I'd be paying to give the things
away (postage ya know). I had promised one to someone on the list quite
awhile back, but I never got around to sending it off, nor do I have that
e-mail anymore. Sorry who ever that is. :-}
