What is the advantage? What would be our target? Are there a grunch of
machines there? And is that NYC or State? Curious minds want to

How about the empire state building, they have machines there.

Hi Aahz!
Great Catalog!
You've asked for any info. I did find this to add:
>>>DIS-DL-9a Mickey Rays - 3D Ears
h. HS Mickey w/ rays like sun "Mickey/Mouse/Disneyland"
Installed: ??/95 Removed: ??/97
Notes: I believe the process used to make these 3D images was
first used by Eurolink in 1995, so this coin was probably Installed early
that year. <<<<
I rolled one of these on 9/5/95 and 9/25/95 (wrote the date on the back).
OK, now for a serious note about this catalog! ;-)
Because of this new information, I now find my set is a LONG way from being
complete. I wouldn't have known it and would have lead a peaceful, happy
life confident that as long as I picked up new coins as they were
introduced,........
Well, Chris, now I'm really stressed!! %-(
To help reduce my stress :-), I'm looking to any other collectors that may
have discontinued Disney EC's to trade. I have an extra or two of the
discontinued DIS-DLH-8, DIS-DL-71 and DIS-DL-69 on silver quarters,
DIS-DL-52, DIS-DL-9a, DIS-DLH-1, DIS-DL-6 and the Mickey's 60th Frank Brazell
cent (Not to mention any currently availables). Would like to trade for (or
purchase) Happy Holidays and New Year's 19XX, AP and the "Dripping Blood"set:
DIS-DL-77, DIS-DL-78, DIS-DL-79.
Happy Collecting,
-Bob and Anastaisa Hoff
TEC#2033 and 2121J
P.S. Chris, I can now discribe a Disneyland ec by number! Neat!

Well, the advantage is that people can get there. Shouldn't be to
tough a trip for either the Boston people or the DC area people. From
what I recall it's pretty much the same distance from each with good
'commuter' transport available from each.
Good targets could be either the Empire State Building (has a few
machines and trading on the observation deck could be pretty neat) with a
possible side trip to the World Trade Center for the machines there or
Bedsloe Island/Statue of Liberty. I'm assuming there are machines on the
island, but there are certainly nice places for a trade session.
Of course, those are both in NYC. There used to be a place called
Adventureland or some such in Jersey, and I'm sure there are other
amusement parks in the area that could make good spots.

Aahz

Wootens at the meet that I'd be willing to kick down in return for
DIS-DL-52 40 Years/Adventure Nickel.
> Mickey's 60th Frank Brazell cent
Just to clarify if anyone's confused....
The coin above is NOT DIS-DL-10 Mickey Sixty Years. The Frank
Brazzell issue was neither official or issued at DL. It's still a
wonderful (and in demand) issue, but does not fit into the portion of the
catalog that has thus far been published. It will be receiving a catlog
number when I start work on the non-offical list.

Maybe just give'um a taste and point them to a place they could get the whole

This has always been a touchy subject for me, but since no one
else has taken up the gauntlet, I suppoe I will...

> flat $3.50 per order, but this seems unfair for small orders (e.g., one or

For a company that does the majority of its business thru the
mail (as I get the impression Statmatics does) this seems a fair policy
to me. It rewards the large customer while not putting too much on the
small one. I accept this from mail order companies as working out
individual postage on orders is far too time consuming.
> More specifically, what should P&H charges be
> for pre-82 Lincoln rolls? For one roll? For 10? For 50?
Well, if my brain serves correctly you can mail up to four rolls
of pennies Priority Mail for $3. Weigh a roll and give a call to the
post office, they'll be able to provide you a postage chart by weight and
class.

He must be shipping UPS. I nelieve the Post Office would be
cheaper for smaller orders.
> So what do you think?
For me, what it boils down to is this: when a person (as opposed
to a company) sells something to another person through the mail, postage
should be either actual cost or worked into the asking price. So called
handling charges are a scam wether you're talking about a person or a
company. I mean, 'handling' is already worked into the price. Nobody
offers to pay for the customers handling of writing and mailing off the
check, not to mention finding and reading the ad in the first place.
It's a cost of doing business and should be assumed by the seller.
I hope that's all clear and doesn't sound too snotty, but as a
long time mail order person, these hidden charges can be REALLY annoying.

The only fair thing to do is cut the nickel in two and send half to each of

Had I known about you collectors, I would have kept better notes on when

them but at the time didn't realize that serious collectors like you

Is someone going to work on a WDW one? ;-)
I have most Disney coins from both ends of the coast but I sometimes get
them confused. For instance, there are several Toy Story pennies. Some
are from Disneyland (DL), and MGM-WDW, Magic Kingdom. There are three
that just have Toy Story along the top (Woody, Buzz, Rex) written like
the movie design. Were these DL issues? Was it part of the Toy Story
funhouse at DL? Was it part of the Toy Story funhouse at the El Capitan
theater in Hollywood when the movie played there? I'm not sure. Anyone
know?

That is what I would suggest having posted my DL list to the newsgroups
long ago. Plus back then I would break up the post so some readers
wouldn't choke on the length. A friend helped move it off the newsgroup
traffic to his website until I could build my own.

If I may throw in my two cents :-)))
I asked a veteran woman at the info booth and she said there were no
machines at the fair now but they did have some years and years ago that
would press generic messages (some religious ones I think). From what I
know, they had an L.A. County Fair coin years back.
There is usually at least one coin collector/exhibitor but I didn't find
the booth and so I couldn't see if they had any for sale. I didn't
notice any machines in my wanderings around the fairgrounds (just in
case the info woman was mistaken).
If you are into trading enamel/cloissone pins, there are quite a few
selling them there.

Hi Jeanne
Welcome to the list. I know many collectors keep their elongates in
binders in the 2 x 2's as I'm sure you have heard - I will eventually.
Right now mine are in thick glass jars (very cool, I think) on top of my
TV in my living room. One with my collection of maybe 200 coins or so and
one with my trade stock.

Thanks for the responses about displaying elongates! You people are cool!
Kinda like a bunch of neighbors.
I have another question. Anyone know of any machines in the Phoenix area?
I've found one at the "Hall Of Flame" Firefighter's Museum, but I'll have a
little time on my hands during an upcoming trip. Not enough to get to the
Grand Canyon area, just the Phoenix area.

That's okay, I'm pretty confident on the dates I have listed.
The first list I found from you was April 1995, and you did the two most
important things I could ask for: Dated each update and highlighted what
was new. The ones without install dates were placed before 4/95 and the
ones without removal dates vanished between 11/96 and 6/97. I should be
able to tracjk these down fairly well.
> I once toyed with the idea of numbering

Well, my numbering system is designed to be used with ALL
elongates, and since your system would likely have been Disney-dedicated,
I would have likely still needed to renumber them. I'm actually glad you
didn't do it previously, because it's easier to get people to use a new
system then it is to get them to change over from an old one.
> Is someone going to work on a WDW one? ;-)
That's the next MAJOR section I have planned. I won't be able to
get the order as accurate, though as the records don't seem to exist.
Kenny Cottrell never (or seldom) posted his list to the ngs and Web Sites
don't archive, unfortunately. When I the current WDW sets the list
ordered come in and I get settled in Pasadena I'll put the call out for
WDW coins and start working on that catalog.

Well, they aren't DL issues as those say "Disneyland" on them.
The difference between those issued in the Starcade and those issued in
the Funhouse at DL is VERY minor, though you may well have both variants.

This is the first I've heard of this place. Perhaps someone can
contact the El Capitan and see if they know anything about this.

"Yesterday's Elongateds" lists five LA County Fair issues: two in
1932 and one each for '33, '36, '38, and '40. These are only the issues
that SAY LA County Fair and were issued prior to 1965. Several people
have mentioned that someone has rolled 'generics' at prior fairs.

Nikki also searched unsuccesfully for both machines and people
selling elongates, so it looks like 'they' (whoever 'they' are) skipped
this year's fair.

The Phoenix Zoo has some, though I'm not sure how many. My
collection also contains two coins from Quartzsite (I have no idea where
this is or if these are even machine rolls) and one from Picacho Pass

Two general tips/requests:
1) ALWAYS roll extras when you find a machine! The primary
purpose of this list is to facilitate trading and you can't trade without
trade stock ;) Personally I collect ANY souvenir coin I can get my paws
on, so you can always be pretty sure I'll take one of each off your
hands. I used to roll three extras at every machine I found, now that
the list is moving I try to roll four or five (finances permitting).
2) If you can, write down the machine/location info. Bert's our
official Location Keeper, so you can either post the info to the list or
pass it directly to him for his web site.
The key info (in order of importance):
Machine location (as detailed as possible)
Design(s) available (ditto)
Machine manufacturer
Anything unusual/unique about the machine
When the machine was first installed
3) If the machine is Out of Order ask the nearest cashier if they
have any spares by the register. They usually do.

I just realized I'll be missing this show! Ack! If you can,
you've gotta attend this show. Their spring show was my first and was

table covered in plastic pages tied together with string (no binders).
He just lays the packets of 2x2s all over the table. He's the largest
exonumia dealer at the show and has a bunch of elongates!! He's also
REALLY nice (though I don't remember his name) and he keeps the oldies
behind the table, so ask if you're interested.

Hi there.
I made a big mess out of my e-mails and I don't know who sent which post.
Regarding the Hall of Flame penny.... If possible, I'd like to get three of them. (One
for my collection, two for Firefighter friends.)
Regarding Utah... I'd LOVE to get an A-10 elongate. (My favorite plane. [Although the
new fighter masy win out...])
Regarding trades: I've acquired some EC's to trade. Areas of interest are cars, planes,
presidents, 4 Lord's Prayer's, (All the same) SF Bay Bridge/Fisherman's Wharf etc. and
some oddball and specialized EC's. Anyone interested just shoot me and e-mail. (Or just
shoot me. It's turning into a tough week.)
Please count me on-board also if there are some Halloween issues-- - I can pay
the fifty one cent cost of the Halloween elongates plus return to whoever
obtains
the coins( pre- 82 pennies) I hope those Halloween elongates are out there
!!!!!
Thank you E. Smith

Most likely no one would go to the trouble of actually cancelling
these dies (obliterating the image so no more coins can be issued). My
money would say the old dies are either in a Disney wherehouse or a
Eurolink wherehouse. Either way, there aren't going to be any more rolled
unless Disney okays it, which means we'd most likely hear about it. It
is, possible, of course, but unlikely for the dated coins. The old
non-dated coins COULD show up again, but the only ones I can think of that
have been removed and weren't dated were all in single issue machines,
while Disney only adds triples now. The exception obviously being the
recently removed quarter machine, but as I've said before I think these
designs will be back in January after the Halloween and Christmas/New Year
coins.
Do any of you Disnophiles have a contact name at DL for who's in
charge of the machines? They'd be the person to ask.

Subject: (elongates) Trading theory (1 of 2)
Date: 17 Sep 1997 00:30:36 -0700 (PDT)
Greetings and Salutations!
The most common comment I hear in private e-mail is: "I don't
really know what this is worth or how trading works...". Similar things
have been said on the list, and at least two different people at the meet
asked about trading value and how things are handled.
As usual, I THINK I have the answer ;) What we need is a
standard currency for trade. We (the electronic EC community) have grown
just like any 'real world' community and have reached the point where a
standard currency is in order. Before the US instituted its current
monetary system no one ever really knew what something was worth.
Shopkeepers had to set prices on a case by case basis depending on what
type of currency the customer was using. Carrying this over to trading
elongates, we each kind of set our trades at whatever 'feels right' at
the moment. The number of people asking 'what's this worth' indicates,
to me, that we need to refine the system. We need a standardized measure
of value for elongated coins.
Personally, I'd rather it not be based on US currency. I don't
want to see people saying: "I have $8 worth of elongateds and I'll trade
them for your $8 worth of elongateds. This just makes things to motive
oriented for my tastes.
Anyone who's looked over the trade lists I published has noticed
that I use a UNIT system for pricing my elongates. I have arbitrarily set
a UNIT to equal 'one currently available elongated penny'. Typically, issue
price is 50c for an elongated penny. Pennies are also the most common
elongated coin and an elongate that I can get from a machine myself is
the most basic item I can think of in the hobby. This is why I use a
currently available elongated penny as my basic UNIT.
When I purchase coins bulk, I typically get them for less than
50c each. However, their 'retail' price would still be 50c, I'm just
buying wholesale at that point. So these coins are still priced at 1 UNIT.
When I buy a lot of coins at auction I often pay much more than
50c each in order to get one or two coins I really want. I end up with a
bunch of trade stock that I paid a buck or more each for, although
they're still currently available elongates. So, I still price them at
one UNIT.
Standard issue price for elongated nickels and dimes run 75c to $1 (80c
in the machines). Quarters are issued at $1 to $1.25. So, standard
value for all of these (assuming they're currently available) is 2
UNITs. Therfore, if I want to trade for one of the currently available
Disneyland nickels, I can expect to trade two currently available
elongated pennies for it. Simple.
As usual, this is longer then I expected. The point of all this
is that I would like to see the UNIT become the common currency of our
community. It will slowly expand ot the resat of the EC community if it
works as well for all of us as it has for me thus far. So, I am
'officially' proposing that all trade lists in the future use the UNIT
system to indicate what value peolpe think their coins have.
Part 2 of 'Trading theory' will attempt to deal with limited
editions and older issues.
As always: Questions, comments, criticisms are welcome and
encouraged publicly or privately.
Peace,
Aahz

Okay, part one laid out the basic UNIT system and suggested UNIT
values for currently available elongates on different types of coins.
But what about no longer available (NLA) elongates? Well, this becomes a
sticky situation, because now we're talking about a 'collectible'. All
collectibles have the same value: "What the buyer is willing to pay and
the seller is willing to take".
Of course, when you're trying to avoid being ripped off (from
either end of the transaction) this little truism doesn't really set ones
mind at ease. Although I haven't read it, Angelo Rosato's "Encyclopedia
of the Modern Elongated" proposes a system of valuation for elongated
coins based solely on time since the die was closed. Frankly, I think
this is only one small part of the equation. Everyone's heard the phrase
'supply and demand' and it is more true in collectibles then elsewhere.
There could only be three known samples of a given elongate, but if only
two people wanted it, the coins would all be essentially worthless. On
the flip side, if thousands of samples were rolled, but hundreds of
thousands of people want one, that coin will be worth a pretty penny
(sorry, couldn't help myself ;)
So, how do we value NLA elongates? I don't know. But I do think
it's up to the seller to come up with a value. Personally, I set value
on coins I have for trade simply on what they cost me. When I go to a
coin show I often pick up World's Fair issues if I think they're
reasonably priced and I have the cash on hand. I don't collect, WF
issues, but I know I can always trade them. I set the value on these
issues at my purchase price. So, if I buy a WF at a show for $5, I put
it on my trade list for 10 UNITs.
Okay, but what about an elongate you purchased at a machine that
has since been removed? I would say that if the machine has been removed
within the last year, adding one UNIT to the value would be fair (pennies
become 2 UNITs, others become 3 UNITs). If the machine has been gone for
more then a year, then the person who currently possessing the coin needs
to set a value. This decision can be made in several ways: look around
for what others are offering similar issues for, arbitrarily set a value,
offer to trade only for other NLA issues, or simply let people know what
you've got and get some other opinions.
There's still one type to be dealt with: limited edition
elongates. Typically, a limited edition elongate is going to have a
higher purchase price, so its original UNIT value will be set based on
that price. Beyond that, you've got to gauge supply and demand. For
example, Willy Massey issued some limited edition coins for Annapolis'
300th Anniversary. He issued three varieties with variety one being
limited to 300 coins, variety 2 at 500 coins and variety 3 at 1000
coins. Issue prices were $1.75, $1.50 and $1.00 respectively. Last I
checked he had sold out of variety 1, but still had variety 2 and 3
available. The anniversary being commemorated was two years ago. So,
varieties 2 and 3 would still be valued at 3 UNITs and 2 UNITs
respectively, while variety 1 (originally 4 UNITs) would be valued at
either 4 or 5 UNITs.
I hope this helps clear some things up. I look forward to
hearing input from the rest of you and seeing the UNIT system used more
widely.
As always: Questions, comments criticisms always welcome!
Peace,
Aahz

Funny that you bring this up.
When I worked at American President Lines, we used a unit called a TEU to
determine how much cargo a ship or a train could carry. A TEU is the
Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit. one twenty foot container is a TEU, a forty foot
is two TEU.
I set up a trade With Bob Hoff recently where I used the PEU or Penny
Equivalent Unit to keep the trade even. Each quarter traded was two TEUs and
a penny of course was one. We traded a total of 12 PEUs, I sent 12 pennies,
he sent 3 quarters (6 PEU) and 6 pennies.
I guess that nickles could be 1.5 PEUs, rounded whatever way you want.
Of course one PEU would be the value of a currently available coin. Anything
rare or not available like the 1996 Disneyland Halloween Villains would be
worth whatever you could get for them, given a willing buyer and a willing
seller.
Just my two PEUs

No, the suitcases are no problem. They smash atoms, which is what we

All three coins are in the catalog: DIS-DL-79, -80, and -81.
They don't say Halloween in the catalog, or on the coins, but they were
only available during Oct. 1996 and the text is in a halloweenish,
dripping blood style. Thus, they're halloween coins. Oddly enough, they
were removed the day BEFORE Halloween and replaced with the 101
Dalmations coins, which were replaced with the 101 Dalmatians coins on
November 1st.
Hope that clears things up!

Sorry about that, DIS-DL-77-79, my bad......
but, as I was putting all of my Dland coins in order of Chris' list, I
noticed two things:
1) I have a DIS-DL-27 without a "cDisney" on it, I thought it was significant
since the distinction is listed on some other entries and
2) I also have a penny very similar to DIS-DL-71 except that it has Brer Fox
and Brer Bear holding the sign but no turtle..what gives?
I looked on the WDWIG penny listings and couldn't find an obvious answer
here, thought that I would turn it over to the resident experts.........

YIKES! The competition is heating up! :-)
I think Chris started this thread back in August? When I asked for a book
recommendation. Back in those days, Angros was selling them for twenty-some
dollars (A price Mr. Rosato said would not be seen again anytime soon and did
mention that someone was selling them in the $40. range). It was great for
Chris to post the news, and, the 12 books sold quickly! I contracted to buy
one but got a "dear almost a customer" letter back a few days ago.
I don't know what is going to happen here on the list. What I will do is run
an ad in a coin trade journal or two and see how many books I can find (if
any) and then just forward the sellers names and addresses on to this list
(Given I have secured one by then :-). It would help if anyone else has a
contact to post the name or offer the book for sale. Looks like we have
three or more people in the market for a YE book wish I had bought a case of
'um!

HI Matt!
Good post, but, Rosato is sold out for now. As I recall, he wrote me to say
he had made an arragement with another party to purchase some more, but, it
fell through (as did my purchase). Also, that he advertised the books at
$26.00 (I think) because he didn't think he ever get "out from under them".
He was sold out as of a few days ago.
I have seen these books for sale in the past but passed them by! :-( But,
then I've done the same with some elongateds I'd love to have now. With so
many of us looking for these books, one of us is bound find some.

The machine at the Computer Museum in Boston is working again, mostly. There
are four designs, but the mechanism that drops the penny seems to like the
robot design best since half the time you have the arrows lined up to the
museum logo, you get the robot instead. So, I have half a dozen sets plus a
lot of extra robots. Anyone wanting to trade, let me know.
For the location keeper and anyone else interested in details, the machine is
just inside the door (before you have to pay admission), 4 designs,
hand-cranked, with "Penny Pinchers" as the trademark on the sign:
1. v, robot, "Boston/The Computer Museum"
2. h, logo, "The Computer Museum/www.tcm.org/Boston, MA"
3. v, 3-D hand, "The Virtual Worlds Gallery/Virtual Reality"
4. h, stick figures on a chip, "The Computer Museum/www.tcm.org/Boston"
I went to Disneyland yesterday to pick up some trades for list members (You
know who you are!). First, I stopped at City Hall to see if there were any
"known" new machines on stage. WOW! A "Mardi Gras" penny press at the Pieces
of Eight!! Even the kids on their way to Indiana Jones made way for me to
pass! Alas, the machine was the Wooten's previously reported new placement
of the "instruments set"! Dah! Well, needed one of those anyway. :-(
A good look around the park found no new coins, but, I did check out the
claim by Chris Aahz that there was some sort of show at the Country Bear
Playhouse. (You know the place where they keep one of the penny presses.) He
was right! I think there is some sort of show there. :-)

Yesterday, I found two new coins near Fisherman's Wharf. The first is
interesting in that it is a near perfect copy of an existing coin nearby. The
difference is only in the border, it has fewer dots. The SF penny machine co.
must be using some sort of mechanical system for creating their dies in that
a human could not have cut the second die this precisely. And also, why would
they want to anyway?
The new coin is identical to the coin at The Combination Shop, 105 Jefferson
St. as shown on Bert's page. The coin is of the skyline with the Transamerica
Pyramid featured, the GG Bridge and a Cable Car. The way that I can tell the
difference, short of counting the dots (once is enough for me thank you) is
that the Jefferson St. penny has the cable car track touching the center of a
dot, the new coin has the track going between two dots. The coin is located
on Taylor St. a block down from the Cable Car turntable or up two blocks from
Jefferson (Fisherman's Wharf).
The second machine located a couple of doors from the aforementioned machine
features a rear quarter, elevation view of a cable car, dot border,
horizontal, Text SAN FRANCISCO above, CABLE CAR below. Not the one with the
street lamp.
I have copies of the "twin" coin as sell as a couple of sets of the other 9
SF coins. Just ask.

Subject: (elongates) new list member
Date: 20 Sep 1997 21:15:45 -0800
Hello,
I am a new member of this list. I have already sent the following
message by private e-mail to a few people whose web pages i checked out,
but i am repeating it here for those who will not have seen it.
I just traded some stuff i had for an old machine that makes elongated
coins. I need to know more about it and how to bring it up to mint
condition. It has been in a garage in Santa Rosa, California, for a
long, long time and although it still does roll coins, it is very rough
and rusty, and it may be missing some crucial ornamental parts.
Here is what it looks like:
The machinery consists of big cast iron gears (like an old hand-crank
drill press) atop a nickel plated iron pillar. The whole thing is about
chest high on me -- maybe 45" tall. The pillar is square in
section and flares out to a square base -- much like a very old
fashioned bar or soda fountain stool.
On the back or operator's side of the pillar in vertically stacked
raised block letters is the name STANLEY. On the front, where the penny
receiver is located, are the words MADE IN USA. Two of the gears at the
top of the mechanism, used to adjust the pressure, read BOSTON NB 48;
the other gears have no marks i can see.
The pillar is mounted on a wooden board and the operator's weight keeps
it from crashing over while in use. The handle is a long flat iron bar,
nickel plated, with a grip made of leather over a wooden core. There is
a metal drawer pull on the back with which to steady the machine as you
turn the crank. An aluminum housing covers some of the gears, but not
all. There are two huge ornamental knobs on the handle shaft (right and
left as you face the machine) and many smaller ornamental knobs at every
place where screws hold the housing to the body (some of them are
missing). There was at least one decal on the housing, but it is worn
away.
There is no automatic feeding mechainsm like in modern coin rollers --
you have to manually line the coin up with the die at the back of the
machine. There are 5 dies in the top roller. Three are in one row and
the other two are in a second row which was welded in, proabably at a
later date. The rollers are rusty and need to be shined up.
The three original dies are horizontal in orientation and depict the
Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay Bridge, and the Golden Gate Exposition at
Treasure Island (sometimes called the San Francisco World's Fair). This
would date the dies to the year 1939, because the bridges opened in 1937
and 1938 and the Golden Gate Exposition opened in 1939.
The two welded-in dies are for the Lord's Prayer and the Ten
Commandments. They are vertical in orientation.
Can anyone supply me with pictures of what this machine was supposed to
look like when new? Give me any history of the manufacture of this
model? Offer suggestions for how to clean the rollers to a mirror finish
without damaging the old dies? Give me a price for having my own die
cut and added to the machine? (There is room for it; i would not wreck
the old dies.)
Thanks.

YEGADS! It looks like I sparked off a controversy....
Should I withdraw the offer? I can always donate the book to next

what I'll do. Otherwise...
I stated what I thought what it was worth. If you think it's worth
less, then make an offer you think is fair.
There are those who think the book is worth a higher tariff, and made an
offer to support that belief. I think the curent bid is too high and
will allow it to be withdrawn. Otherwise it's the winner, and I'll pay

> Thank you E. Smith
I don't know how much vintage machines usually go for, but new ones seem
to sell for $2,000.00 or more. I traded about $500.00 worth of Catalin
jewelry and an unspecified value of comic book art (most of it given to
me and therefore unvalued) for this vintage machine. I figure that it
will take a minimum of $500.00 to bring it up to proper condition,
because of the 18 decorative chromed balls that act as screw-covers, 11
are missing and must be custom-manufactured, plus there ia a pices of
aluminum cover-plate gone (although the pattern for it can be copied
from the other side of the machine), and re-plating the pillar would be
a good idea, too. At this point my elongated penny machine is a
"project," not a "showpiece" if you know what i mean. I like antiques
and enjoy restoration projects like this, so i expect to have a lot of
fun working on it.

IMHO, I'd vote that it goes to the highest bidder. Usually, I sell or trade
with the first to accept my offer, but if your post asked for offers, that's
an auction. Then it should go to the person willing to pay the most. (Once

Yep, I sure do. CCE is now defunct. The club lasted until at least
1976. It failed awhile later. I'm remembering that I've read more info
on the club somewhere. I'll have to dig through my 5 years of TEC News
back issues and see what I come up with. Angelo's encyclopedia has a
section on CCE starting on page 346. The club would probably be most
noted for having produced the "World's Rarest Enlongated" Mintage was
one, then the die was canceled. The cancellation however was only minor,
and cancelled rolls do exsist. Oh, actually I just read in the
encyclopedia that 200 cancelled specimens were rolled on 1972 cents and
offered for sale for $1.00 each, with a limit of 2 per person. They are
out there. As for the origional, word has it that TEC is now the owner
of the coin. I think it was displayed at the convention or something. I
think most of CCE was obsorbed by TEC, not entirely sure though. I think
CCE just kinda fizzled and finally gave up the goat. If anyone wants a
more detailed history of the club, I could quote some sections for the
ecyclopedia. Also, if I get around to it, I'll look and see if I have
any newer info from TEC News on CCE.

YIKES! :-)
Seems e-mail gets crossed.
Please bear in mind that becuase of AOL, my list mail is received out of
order. :-(
I'm Bob Hoff, the person that inquired last month about ec books. A post
followed from Chris with info and an excelent price for the YE book from
Angros. Later I contacted them. He was already sold out, but, cut me a deal
for one that later fell though. I think you, Ken, posted asking for Angros
phone number, I replied without reading the entire e-mail and must have
typo'd the phone number. :-( You posted again asking for the right number
and I replied with the correct number adding that Angros was sold out. Then
Bob Slevans was kind to offer his book for $35.00, quoting my post to you
with my name. I thought the offer was to me and said sure, sold. Later Bob,
posted that the origninal offer was to #2116 and he would hold it for your
reply. I then believed the intent be for auction and I did see an offer of
$45.00 thinking then that I was over-bid. I think I now realize what
happened.
-It was my confusion / error. My offer to purchase should not have been
made. As far as I can see (with corrected vision ;-), the book should be
Ken's at Bob's asking price of $35.00 or what ever you two agree to.
My apologies,
-Bob Hoff

The man i got it from had acquired it a long time ago in trade for a
slot machine. All he knew was that it had been used at Treasure Isalnd
during the 1939 World's Fair and then had been used in San Francisco
prior to the 1960s. I think he got it in the 1970s.
In looking at the machine more closely, i think i can safely say that
the art deco style housing that covers the gears was hand-made at a
sheet metal shop and was not factory-made. There are tiny mis-cuts and
assymetrical cuts that mark it as one-off work, not die-cut or
mass-produced.

I will indeed. Thanks for the tip.

What books? I am new to this and have never seen any such books.

That was very good advice. I gave it a whirl and tried the Scotch Brite
pads -- and have already accomplished a LOT of cleanup. The main gears
now turn freely and the munge has been removed from the housing. I think
i am going to have to disassemble the entire machine, though, to get at
all the hidden rust. I am going to ask a friend of mine who works on
cars to help me. He doesn't mind grease and rust and he understands how
to put machinery back together again <g>.
Pretty soon i will have pictures of this vintage rolling machine on one
of my web pages so folks can give it a look and tell me if they
recognize the model. I am posting this letter to the elongates mailing
list, too (hope that's okay) in the hope that any folks into the old
machines will contact me.

Hi, Kathy,
Thanks for your alert! I knew the article should have been published
last week, but since Bert is in "paradise", there was no one to tell us
it was out.
I went to the San Diego Union-Tribune on line, and found the article.
They are at:
http://www.uniontrib.com/utarchives/index.html
You can search from there for an article including the words elongated
and coins. They want you to register first, but there is no charge.
The article is dated 18 Sept 1997. Hope you find it o.k.
Thanks to the Wootens, I found the article about our hobby on the San Diego
Union-Tribune's Internet site. Since it's difficult to get there and a pain
to have to register, I've added the article (in it's entirety) to the Penny
Page for your viewing convenience:
The article is linked on the front page under "What's new" but will be
linked from the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) Page in a few weeks.
Speaking of the FAQ's....I have updated that page today from questions and
answers that originated here on this discussion list. If do not wish to
have your question or answer posted on my FAQ Page, please let me know and
it will be removed or edited.

An Elongated Journey through Northern New Hampshire
=A9 1997 by Robert F. Fritsch
My wife and I made a journey to the Mount Washington Valley in northern N=
ew=20
Hampshire on a fine weekend in late September 1997. Our primary purpose =
was to=20
relax a bit away from work, and I had a secondary objective of finding as=
many penny=20
squashing machines as I could. The only real plan we had was to ride the=
Conway=20
Scenic Railway into Crawford Notch, one of the passes through the White M=
ountains. =20
So armed with machine locators from the Web, off we went.
We left our home in southern NH early Friday morning (yes, my company has=
one of=20
those 9-80 work schedules where we get a long weekend every other week), =
but almost=20
not early enough. We drove up through Manchester and Concord, then got o=
ff the I-93=20
to cut through the Lakes Region toward our destination. We arrived just =
as the train=20
started boarding, and had only a few minutes to get our tickets and make =
the obligatory=20
stop. While waiting for the wife to get her turn, I explored the gift sh=
op and found the=20
first machine [I will use Bert Creighton's format to describe these machi=
nes]:
Location: Conway Scenic Railroad Station Gift Shop, just inside the str=
eet-side=20
entrance
Status: Working 9/97
Manufacturer: Eurolink
Code 18 sign: Yes
1 - (H) [Train with steam engine and Station] "Conway Scenic" above,=20
"Railroad" below, dotted border with small "e" by the catch notch ("Railr=
oad"=20
interrupts the border on the bottom)
The train ride was totally uneventful which is the way it is supposed to =
be. The route=20
followed the long-defunct Boston & Maine rail up through Crawford Notch t=
o a place=20
called Fabyan's just north of Bretton Woods. This last is the location o=
f the Mount=20
Washington Hotel which was the site of the 1944 international conference =
that=20
established the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank (appropria=
tely called=20
the Bretton Woods Treaty). Unfortunately, Nature had not yet put on her =
Fall colors for=20
us. Just wait a couple of weeks and you won't get near the place for all=
the Leaf-
Peepers crawling around there. At Fabyan's, the engine swapped ends of t=
he train to=20
pull us back down to Conway. Another uneventful journey suited us just f=
ine.
The day was pretty well shot so we found our hotel and some supper. That=
pretty well=20
wrapped up Friday except for a good night's sleep.
The next morning was the start of The Hunt. After a good breakfast, our =
first stop was=20
at Mt Cranmore Ski Area. This was a likely spot as the first NH elongate=
ds (the only=20
NH coins listed in Yesterday's Elongateds) came from here. Alas, no long=
er. So we=20
headed north stopping at likely places (translation: Tourist Traps) askin=
g about=20
machines. Storyland - none; Heritage New Hampshire - none. So we hit th=
e Mt=20
Washington Stage Depot as listed in Willy Massey's locator. Sure enough,=
there one=20
was:
Location: Mt Washington Stage Stop (Depot), just inside the building by =
the=20
Gift Shop entrance
Status: Working 9/97
Manufacturer: Engravings by Uncommon Cents (Large script "U" with cent=20
sign inside), 4 designs, hand crank
Code 18 sign: Yes
1 - (H), [Moose] "Give Them a Brake" above; beaded border with dashes at=20
both ends
2 - (V), [Squiggle denoting Auto Road] "6288 Ft" above, "Mount Washington=
=20
Auto Road" below, beaded border with dashes at both ends
3 - (V), [Old Man] "Old Man of the Mountains" above, "White Mountains NH"=
=20
below, beaded border with dashes at both ends.
4 - (H), [Eagle with spread wings] "Live Free or Die" above, "White Mount=
ains,=20
NH" below, beaded border with dashes at both ends.
I asked the young lady at the gift counter if she knew of any other machi=
nes in the area. =20
She pointed me to one at Santa's Village in Jefferson, NH but didn't know=
of any others=20
in the area. I told her about the one at the RR Station. So we headed o=
ff to Jefferson=20
and found Santa's Village. This was a less than satisfactory stop, as th=
e machine was=20
inside the park and I was not about to pay the $16 admission fee to get i=
n. The ladies at=20
the Gift Shop were helpful though, and gave me two examples of the coins.=
They are=20
used as prizes in the Elfabet Game, or you could dump in the 51 cents and=
get the=20
rolled coin. This coin is DOUBLE SIDED!
Location: Santa's Village in Jefferson, NH near the Elfabet Game
Status: Working 9/97
Manufacturer: ??
Code 18 Sign: ??
1 - (V), Side 1 =3D [Elf] "Santa's Village (script) Jefferson New Hampshi=
re=20
(block)", beaded border. Side 2 =3D [] "I Found All The Letters In The E=
lfabet =A9=20
Game (block) Santa's Village (script) Fun from A To Z Jefferson, NH (bloc=
k)". =20
There is a catch notch on both sides and they are almost in exact registe=
r. The=20
background on both sides is fine parallel lines. I will have to write to=
these=20
people and get the rest of the story plus more coins.
The ladies did not know of any other machines so I told them about the on=
es I knew=20
about. Although Santa was somewhat out of the way of our planned direct =
line of=20
travel, we went down the other side of Mt Washington to the Cog Railway. =
They say=20
that getting there is half the fun, and this trek was no exception. We b=
asically traveled=20
up a poorly maintained 2 lane blacktop through utter wilderness. The tre=
es were so=20
close together you could easily get lost just 10 feet into the woods (thi=
s is no joke, I=20
have searched for people in Maine who did just that!). At the base of th=
e mountain was=20
the Cog RR Station, with the atmosphere reeking of coal dust. The old st=
eam engines=20
use a ton of the stuff every trip up the mountain. And there, just insid=
e to door to the=20
cafeteria level was the machine I was seeking, another DOUBLE-SIDER!
Location: Mt Washington Cog RR Station, upper level
Status: Working 9/97
Manufacturer: ?. The machine has flashing lights and plays "music" like=
the=20
boop-boop-boop on the Jeopardy game Board.
Code 18 Sign: Yes
1 - Side 1 =3D (V), [Cog Train] "Mt. Washington" above, "Cog Railway" bel=
ow,=20
beaded border, lined background. This side is misaligned with the right =
border=20
significantly into the coin and the left border missing. Side 2 =3D (H),=
[] "Mt.=20
Washington Cog ("O" shaped like a cog wheel) Railway", beaded border, las=
t=20
letter partially missing, plain background.. Each side has a catch notch=
and they=20
are not aligned properly. As a result, the opposite end of the coin look=
s like it=20
has a chunk taken out of it. That is not what it seems -- it is two tail=
s that are=20
side-by-side and the coin itself is very irregular. The Gift Shop lady s=
aid that=20
the machine was owned by the RR and the maintenance people took care of i=
t.
The weather had been threatening all morning, and it finally made good on=
its promise=20
with a downpour. So we decided to head south via Franconia Notch and the=
=20
Lincoln/Woodstock area where my wife grew up. We stopped at the Cannon M=
ountain=20
Aerial Tramway (for which many medals were struck when it first opened), =
and asked=20
about any machines. There were none there but one of the workers thought=
there might=20
be one in Weirs Beach down in the Lakes Region. After a quick lunch in W=
oodstock,=20
we headed in that direction, but the tip was a bad one.
The storm seemed to follow us all the way home, and once we made final de=
stination,=20
it stopped. The trip was a total success, with both of us getting some v=
ery necessary=20
relaxation and me virtually completing my New Hampshire set of elongates.=
I know of=20
no other machines in the state which does not necessarily mean there are =
none. But I=20
can say that my collection is complete to the best of my knowledge. The =
next step is to=20
write a Letter to the Editor in the major newspapers in the state asking =
if anybody=20
knows about other machines. I'll let you know how that turns out.

Hi Everyone,
Just got home from Hawaii and will update you all more in the next 24
hours...
The newspaper article came out last Thursday. I just took at quick look
(it is 1:26am now), and it looks great! MANY Thanks to John Wilkens at
the San Diego Union Tribune!!! More details coming soon...
I downloaded 161 emails, you all have been busy! Some of the emails are
from people that saw the article... There should be some fun ones to
read, and I will summarize them for you...
Here's a good one for you. A location keeper goes to Hawaii on business,
and to attend a wedding. He takes his family to a zoo for a hour, and
returns to his rental car to find everything missing. Everything! Did I
mention they took everything? The baby's car seat was the only thing not
taken... Things kept finding new 'lows' after that... But it be a long
tale you probably could not believe... Soooo, we'll just say to be
careful where you leave your car when you go to smash pennies...
Hope you all are doing well! See you online soon...

Same concept. I like PEU.

Getting in to halves simply causes problems IMHO. I think it's
much easier to just call a nickel 2 PEUs and I've ytet to hear of anyone
balking at trading two pennies for a nickel or a quarter for a nickel.

Are there any marks on yours to the left of Jasmine's thigh? I also

Brer Turtle is very small on this coin. Brer Fox is standing on
him. Take a closer look and let us know if he's definetly not there.
Whereabouts are you? I'd like to get a second opinion for

Well, the WDWIG only covers Walt Disney World issues. If these
are WDW issues you're talking about that could explain the difference. I
have only catalogged the Disneyland coins thus far.

Thanx for the gret trip report, Bob! Sounds like it was quite
enjoyable. The info on where there AREN'T machines is nearly as valuable
as where there ARE machines as it saves future hunters a little time and

Hi All,
I would like to get in contact with Ben Lavine.
Thanks,
Tony {stanton@eci.com}
For many people, it starts with fat desires and thin wallets.
They are at Disneyland or Sea World or the Empire State Building and
they want to take home a souvenir. But they don't have much money. Thirty
dollars for salt-and-pepper shakers? Twenty bucks for a T-shirt?
Ridiculous.
Off in the corner is a machine. All gears and chutes and rollers, the
contraption takes a penny and smashes it, leaves an imprint of Mickey
Mouse or Shamu or whatever.
It costs 50 cents (plus the penny). Pocket change.
So they get their souvenir. They move it around in their hands and,
well, it's pretty neat. The design on the front is raised, interesting to
the touch. On the back, the coin's image is stretched, but recognizable.
Next time they go somewhere touristy, they remember. They pull out a
penny, and two more quarters, and they have another keepsake. What
started as a cheap thrill becomes a hobby.
"Now, as I travel, I look for places that feel like they would have a
penny machine," said Lorrali Herrera of San Diego. "I grow anxious
with the possibility of turning the next corner and seeing one."
Herrera is among a small but dedicated group of people who collect
these coins. They are folks who hoard pennies just for smashing --
especially pennies minted before 1982. (In that year, the content of
the coin changed to mostly zinc. A sad substitute for copper, zinc
leaves unattractive streaks in flattened pennies.)
This is the 1990s, so the hobbyists have their own Web pages and
e-mail lists, too. They share information about locations of smashing
machines; some route their vacations accordingly.
They trade coins and have collections numbering in the hundreds. Some
specialize in designs of trains, or zoos, or amusement parks. (One
lady, borrowing a nickname from the famous pool player, calls herself
"Minnesota Flats.") They carry the coins in protective vinyl holders
and binders.
They have their own club, their own newsletter, their own museum. Even
their own language, although a controversy is brewing there. Should a
smashed coin be called an "elongated" or an "elongate?"
Oddly enough, nobody's in it for the money.
[INLINE] [INLINE] [INLINE]
Yes, it's legal.
Federal law prohibits the fraudulent alteration or mutilation of
American currency, but flattening a penny (or a nickel or a quarter)
for a souvenir apparently doesn't qualify.
"The key word there is fraudulent," said Bert Creighton, a Chula Vista
collector. "A lot of people are afraid to smash pennies because they
think they will get into trouble."
Put it this way: No one in the smashed-coin world knows of anybody
ever being arrested for flattening a penny. (Don't try it in Canada,
though; squishing a coin there can bring a $2,000 fine. People called
"rogue rollers" fill the black market.)
Although the hobby is apparently enjoying something of an upswing --
an estimated 1,000 people nationwide are "serious" collectors now --
smashed pennies have been around for more than 100 years.
Willy Massey, a Maryland resident who is president of the Elongated
Collectors club, said the first ones apparently surfaced in around
1893 in Chicago, during an exposition. Some of those pennies are still
around and coveted by certain collectors.
"I like the idea that a penny I own has been around that long," said
Corey Wylde, of Fullerton, editor of the collectors' club newsletter. "The
person who first had this coin probably had the same complaints and
irritations that we do in our lives. It kind of puts things in perspective."
Early machines were operated by hand, with a crank. Newer ones run on
electricity. The penny is forced through a pair of rollers exerting
tons of pressure. On one of the rollers is a design, engraved in reverse
so that it comes out correctly on the face of the coin. The coin, removed
from the machine, is warm from its journey.
(The coins rolled in these machines are not to be confused with
pennies smashed by trains. Those coins are known as "naturals" by
collectors, who don't generally collect them.)
Machines are located at popular tourist sites in most cities in the
country, including San Diego. They can be found here at the Zoo, Sea
World, Old Town, the museums in Balboa Park -- pretty much anywhere
your Aunt Bertha might want to go next time she's visiting from Toledo.
"When we were kids, we would see a museum and say, `Yuk, a stuffy old
museum,' " Creighton said. "Now we say, `Cool -- let's go smash some
pennies.' "
On a recent trek to Old Town, Creighton asked a longtime worker in a
gift shop where the rolling machines are. "We don't have anything like that
around here," the worker told him.
Creighton nosed around anyway and found four different machines. He
pulled out a roll of quarters bought at a bank and a tube filled with shiny,
pre-zinc, uncirculated pennies bought from a coin dealer (5 cents to
10 cents each) and started smashing.
The 41-year-old computer engineer shrugged off the misinformation from
the gift shop worker. "It happens all the time," he said. "I knew there
were machines here. You get so you can almost smell the copper."
[INLINE] [INLINE] [INLINE]
For many collectors, especially those on the West Coast, Disneyland is
mecca. There are more than 80 rolling machines -- pennies, nickels,
quarters -- at the amusement park, spread out around the arcades and
gift shops.
When word surfaced a couple years ago that a machine commemorating the
release of "101 Dalmatians" had a misspelled word in the engraving,
collectors headed to the park. Alas, most ran into the vaunted Disney
efficiency: The machine was pulled so the error could be corrected.
Earlier this month, on a Sunday, a group of about 20 collectors met at
the Magic Kingdom. While other visitors were waiting in line for Space
Mountain and the Matterhorn, the collectors moved from smashing machine
to smashing machine.
One of their favorite machines is in a shop in Adventureland. It
features a noisy elephant that appears to be squishing coins with its
feet. Nine different elongateds are available at this machine.
The collectors met through the Internet, on an e-mail list.
The mailing list was set up by Chris Aahz of San Jose, who got his
first smashed penny in Las Vegas, as a souvenir of his wedding. "I no
longer have my wife," he said, "but I still have that coin." That one and
about 750 others.
The Internet is also home to several Web pages devoted to the coins.
Creighton operates one with a state-by-state list of rolling machine
locations. (The address is [1]
http://atlantis.austin.apple.com/people.pages/bcreighton/SmashedCoins.html)
Trades are arranged through the Internet, too. People in one part of
the country collect coins from their region and trade them with people
from other areas.
"I'm getting coins from places I never expect to visit," Creighton
said.
Some collectors, though, prefer to obtain the coins themselves. "The
anticipation of finding a new machine and the thrill of the hunt is
what I like about collecting these pennies," said Herrera.
[INLINE] [INLINE] [INLINE]
The lure of the highway is also at the heart of the current exhibit at
the Squished Penny Museum in Washington, D.C. Called "The Open Road:
Touring America Today," it features about 250 pennies.
The museum is viewed by appointment only. That's because it's operated
in the living room of co-owners Christine Henry and Pete Morelewicz and
it takes them a while to set up the exhibit panels.
Henry and Morelewicz also put out a newsletter, called the Centinel.
It's published "periodically, as we see fit."
A recent "squissue" included a mostly serious story about how
disappointed Henry was when she went to the Osmond Family Theater in
Branson, Mo., and tried to get pennies commemorating an ice revue. The
machine was broken.
Two readers arranged for pennies to be made at the theater and sent to
the museum. "People really went out of their way to get them for us,"
Henry said.
This kind of camaraderie, collectors said, is what they like best
about the hobby.
Except for the older, rare pennies, which might fetch $50, most of the
elongated coins aren't worth much more than $1. So people aren't in it
to get rich.
"It's like how baseball cards were when we were kids," Creighton said.
Finding smashing machines is a regular topic of conversation,
especially since the devices are moved fairly often, depending on whether
they're making any money for the owner.
Collectors said they have tried to get the manufacturers of the
rolling machines to give them lists of locations, but these apparently are
closely guarded secrets. "They won't even return our phone calls,"
Creighton said.
It's gotten to the point where collectors now are compiling their own
lists -- of places where they feel machines should be.
At the top is Washington, D.C. Nobody knows exactly why, but at The
Mall, you can visit Lincoln's memorial, but you can't get his head squished
on a penny.
Okay, Bob Hoff pointed out yet another typo in my DL catalog:
DIS-DL-93 Cowboy Mickey - Closed is listed as vertical, but is
actually horizontal. Correct listing for cut-and-paste purposes:
DIS-DL-93 Cowboy Mickey - Closed
h. Waist up of Cowboy Mickey w/ Pistol "Frontierland/Disneyland"
Installed: ??/?? Removed: CA
Notes: Similar to DIS-DL-4a, but lettering is closed
Thanx Bob!!

should be getting pennies from Chris (if I owe more money than sent,
please let me know) and Jeff (in route moving?) and Big Al's adventure
in making pennies. Please contact me if others are coming and if I owe.
My catch up stack is about 1" high and am going to try to do some of it

Here's a location update:
I went over to the Boston Computer Museum. The penny machine is still broken. :(
However, I went to the Children's Museum and squished a bunch of "hood pennies."
The alignment on the machine is still wrong, some of the letters on the top
of the design get smucked.
The good news is I know the name of the company responsible for the area machines!
It's called Penny Works and the number is:
(800) 697-3669
or
(508) 346-4263
I left a message on their answering machine. It sounds like a pretty small outfit.
On the Boston Whalewatch penny, sure enough the penny exists. But, it's on the boat!
You have to either wait for the boat to come back to shore - or take the 5-hour cruise.
I don't have the time to do it right now -- so I'm hoping somebody can get me a pre-82 of it.
Thanx for keeping us all informed of how this project is coming
along! I've provided the answer for the only question I could:

The primary books on elongates are:
The Elongated Collector by Dottie Dow
Yesterday's Elongateds by Lee Martin and Dottie Dow
Today's Elongateds by Lee Martin
The Encyclopedia of the Modern Elongated by Angelo Rosato
All are out of date, but still incredibly useful. All but the
last are out of print and getting more and more difficult to find each
day. The Encyclopedia is available from:

Speaking of children's museum, the one in downtown Los Angeles has a
penny machine (lettering just like the logo for the museum). The museum
is only open on weekends.
Several weeks ago there was discussion about the material the coin
holders were made of, and whether they might be harmful to the finish of
the coins over time. Since that time I have talked with my local coin
dealer, and he told me the clear stuff (plastic wrap, celephane, or
whatever) in the ones he sells is mylar, which will not harm the coins.
Perhaps someone should ask what the elongated ones TEC sells are made
of. I'm would think they must be safe, but if not, perhaps the next
batch could be made up with the non-reactive mylar.

I'm 99% sure the TEC holders are not mylar. They're PVC or
somesuch. Mylar has a different feel then these do. Also, Mylar
typically costs 3x as much as standard issue plastic. Personally, I
don't see the value of my elongates being worth more then a few cents per
2x2.

About the Boston computer musuem, the machine was working okay on Friday the
19th. I have a few sets left if anyone else is interested in trading for
them.
About the aquarium, I was very close to going on the whale watch Sunday
afternoon, half to get the pennies, half to try out my zoom lens on a bright
and beautiful day, but the boat captain cancelled saying it was too cold and
choppy. Oh, well. I'm going to a member's night event on Friday and will
see if they'll let me on the boat to get some whale watch pennies.

As Chris said a few days ago, it's as important to know where machines
are not as to know where they are.
I just realized that each time I go to the Los Angeles area I pass the
Los Angels Zoo. but I have never seen anything about machines there,
even though there are machines at most zoos.

Not sure about the L.A. Zoo but if you are out that way (Griffith Park)
then visit TravelTown which is just around the bend on Zoo Drive.
There's a penny machine there for only a quarter! It's the only single
quarter (cost) machine I've come across.

I believe she said there were two machines one located in front of each

I'd like a set of SD Zoo on pre-'82 cents. (As would others here, I'm sure.)
Let us know how many coins are in the set and what you'd like us to trade
for them.

Guess the Condor is extinct. :-( Must have been there in the late '70s
maybe early '80s. As I recall, it was a single machine.

Nancy,
Thank you for thinking of us. Alex is sick, and Deidra and I have caught
his bug... We are busy trying to replace everything (well, the basics)
from our stolen luggage, work with the Honolulu Police Dept and the
insurance company.
Hopefully, everyone will be on the mend soon, and we can start getting
things back to a normal schedule (3 hour changes for 2 year olds when
they are sick is kinda rough).

I've made arrangements to get my missing elusive 13th quarter (the Magic
Kingdom Mickey) through a fellow, Maurice, at MK0901@aol.com.
He says that since he's going there anyway, he can get more quarters to
trade with whoever wants them but you need to contact him ASAP as he is
probably going this weekend.
Feel free to E-mail him and make arrangements to get your own quarters.
Perhaps he might get a whole set for you, but you'll have to make it
worth his time because the coins are spread-out over the entire resort and it
requires the whole day to collect them all. It cost me an entire set of
Disneyland coins to get three sets of WDW quarters.

Hi !
YEP! We know, don't say it, you are looking for old Disney too! :-)
Well, just in case someone has some non-current Disney ec's for sale or
trade, don't forget us. Our goal is to put together two complete sets of
Disney ec's. We're ready to deal. :-) We recently purchased a bunch of
exonumia from a small dealer's estate so, for trades, we have a few extra
discontinued Disney ec's, all current Disney, many non-Disney (Just name the
type you collect) ec's, Disney pins, wooden nickels, old silver dollars, and
ec's on really odd coins (Kennedy halves, Susan B. Anthony's, Mexican,
Canadian, dimes, nickels, English etc.) Let's trade!
I was just at the park and realized that all the ec machines have been moved
out of Fantasyland. Also, there are none in ToonTown. Could it be because
the coins are too small for little kids?
Where in Fantasyland were the machines before they were moved?
I suspect revenue is the prime mover of DL EC machines. They are probably
moved to locations that appear to generate more 'smashing.'

Greetings,
I started recently adding locations where machines are NOT located. This
effort started with my Hawaii Smashed Coin Locator page (since I covered
a lot of ground on a previous trip and found locations with no machines).
It is important to say this -- machines could, and should be placed in
some of these locations... Perhaps I should add a date (Example: Sub
Museum, no machine on 6/97).
I am not intending on people seeing a "No Machine" report and staying
away from this venue/location... My intent is to help you all prioritize
your collecting time, starting with Known Good Locations, and then
working into the "have never seen one here" locations...
I am also adding "Places that need to be checked out..." This is an
effort to identify potential sites, ones I have not had time to visit...
Does this sound OK to you all?

Hi, folks --
I have noting to trade, but i want to BUY. Is that okay?
I am only looking for "good luck" elongated pennies, the older the
better. (My earliest was rolled on a 1905 Indian head penny.)
(I also collect older brass, bronze, and copper good luck tokens and
pocket pieces (not elongated) such as those with images of rabbit feet,
horseshoes, lucky (not Nazi) swastikas, and so forth. And i also collect
older encased currency (pre-WW II) with good luck messages such as "Keep
Me and Never Go Broke.")
On the elongated coins, images of horseshoes, four-leaf clovers, etc.
are the best for me -- they are more fun than a tourist attraction with
the words "good luck" superimposed.
Like i said, i have nothing to trade, but i offer money. Just e-mail me
with prices of what you have for sale.

Sounds like you've got way too much time on your hands.
A no penny here list would be a literal bottomless pit of information.
Nevertheless, add these places to your list.
California Academy of Sciences/Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco.
Oakland Zoo at Knowland Park in Oakland.
Drinkard-Dickinson Insurance Services in Fairfield, CA (Drinkard made me put
that here as he wants to put a machine in his lobby)
On a similar note, never assume that there are no machines in a location
simply because an employee says so. The most common reaction to my asking
about penny machines is a blank, blinking, are-you-nuts stare. Often produced
within visual range of a pressing machine.
Ask first, then check it out for yourself.
Happy collecting-or just searching.

You know, I realize that revenue has something to do with the placement of
the machines, but I also hope that there is at least a small amount of
"Disney Magic" at work here and that some of the machines, the frontierland
machine and the machines at the Pacific hotel are good examples, are tucked
away a bit, making the search for them something of an adventure. I have to
admit, before I had a serious interest in getting information (detailed maps
for every machine in the park), roaming around the park and the hotels for
the thrill of finding a new machine really was fun.
That is why I have mixed emotions about contacting Eurolink and SF Penny
Co. about getting lists of penny machine locations.
It would sure make finding the machines easier, but it would eliminate
the hunting aspect of the hobby which is some of the fun. Kinda like going to
the market and buying a fish rather than catching it yourself.

Subject: (elongates) Boston Whale Watch penny...
Date: 28 Sep 1997 12:18:30 -0400
Hi All...
As of this writing, the New England Aquarium Whale Watch penny machine is down. No word
on a repair date. :(
On a brighter note, the whale watch was so cool I almost forgot about the penny until
the return trip. We saw 6 or 7 Humpback Whales and they put on a real show.
Tail-lobbing, fin-slapping and breaching. Awesome. Saw some Atlantic White-Sided
Dolphins too!
I have to encourage anyone in Boston with the time (5-6 hours) to take the N.E. Aquarium
Whale Watch cruise. The Captain and crew are adept at finding marine mammals. Their
boat has a larger crew than most (Avg.: 3-5 N.E. Aquarium: 8) including biologists and
naturalists. Their cruise is a little more expensive than most but well worth it at
$24.00/pp. Nice snack bar, clean heads too. (Bathrooms for you land-types.)
Oh yeah. The penny. As I wrote, the machine was down. I forget who wrote it (Aahz?)
but always ask at the counter. A young man on the boat hunted down one for me and would
accept no money for it.
Given the overall condition of the boat, I would expect the machine to be back on line
soon. I'm hoping to go on the Whale Watch again before the end of the season. If the
machine is working, I'll be sure and get some trade stock. If I remember the machine
that is...
They moved the Peter Pan set out of the Tinker Bell Toy Shoppe long,
long ago. It used to be by the back entrance.
I've never seen an EC machine in ToonTown.

Mickey,
Thanks for all your thoughts on this. NO, I don't have to much time on my
hands, but it is easy to copy and paste reports from emails which say "no
penny machines at Hotel Del Coronado." Like I said, this is to help
everyone prioritize a list when they get to a new area (highest
probability of finding coins down to the lower probability sites).
When you read the San Diego Union Trib article that ran week before last,
you'll see the part about me asking salespeople in Old Town about
locations... They said "no way, not anywhere in Old Town" - and I found 4
machines in 30 mins! "No" means "probably" to me. The article had some
quote from me about "being about to smell the copper" or some such
phrase. I know, sounds corny, but I was trying to convey the feeling that
I think a Eurolink or other penny company sales person must get when they
walk into a tourist area and say to themselves "paydirt!" Once I found
the first machine in Old Town, I just needed to think like the EC company
representative that walked there before me, selling (or leasing or
whatever) these machines to the shop owners... Sure enough, there was a
"beeline" of machines.
Anyway, I appreciate your thoughts, and will incorporate your "NPH" (No
Pennies Here) locations as soon as possible. Thanks Mickey!

All the 25th quarters I got at WDW are vertical. The 12 from the hotels have
25 and 1996 on them. The 13th from inside the park has Mickey as Sorcerer's
Apprentince, stars, and 25, but no 1996. As I recall, the dies for all were
to be removed and destroyed in October.

Yes, we did. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves visiting the locations.
It's amazing what a small zoo, totally dependent on donations can
accomplish. For all who have such near them, I recommend visiting just
for the enjoyment of seeing the local animals. (Ours consists mainly of
coyotes, mule deer, various birds of prey, and a couple of bears that
were orphaned last year when their mother was hit by a train. They also
had a very nice (ugh) reptile area.

I'm not sure if there were a lot of EC machines in Fantasyland. The
Peter Pan/Tinker Bell might have been at the Tinker Bell Toy Store at
the castle, but since they started storytime during the summer and the
merchandise has changed a bit, they could have reasons to move it then.
I don't remember stumbling upon an EC machine in Toontown. It would
have to look unique because everything in Toontown has the Toontown look
and the EC companies might not have appreciated the change in look. Has
anyone seen an EC machine at Disneyland (or WDW) that the physical look
has been changed to fit in with its surroundings?

Rajah's Mint certainly looks pretty unique! One of Eurolink's
advertising points is that they offer custom cases, so I doubt this would
be a problem for them.

That's the one I've got. I coulda sworn when I was looking
through Jeff Dixon's binder he had one that looked very similar to the
13th, but was horizontal. Hmmm.....

I heard they were to be removed at the end of the year. And that
the 13th had no such sign on it. Also, Kenny Cottrell has several
locations on his WDW list for the thirteenth quarter. Don't suppose
anyone collected samples from each machine?

WDW ads running here are urging everyone to get to WDW before 1/31/98 when
the celebration ends.
Did they extend it? I wonder if the dies are going to be there until then.
It's going to be nice not to have to look at that ugly castle.

Strange, I don't recall ever seeing a WDW ad in the Bay Area.
Hmmm...guess maybe that's why I've never been there. And I thought it
was merely poverty ;)

I dunno if they extended it or not, but disney.com says the
celebration does end 1/31/98. Maybe we all just assumed it would end at
the end of the year...<shrug>
Speaking of weird date things....
I assumed that 1997 was the actual 25th Anniv. If so, why are
the quarters dated 1996?

I was there in May of 1996. At that time, they were taking pictures of the
train and people, dressed up in 25th garb! A l o n g sell-a-bration! :-)
They offered three quarters (that I could find) at the Magic Kindom, Mickey,
Mini, Castle, all were (V)'s, none were 25th's.

NO! We're NOT having that debate here. (sorry, I'm just sick of it)

So, WDW opened in the middle of 1981?
That would answer the question, but it's going to look awfully
odd in the catalog having coins that say 1996 listed as being available
from 10/97 to 1/98. Oh well...

Carl,
I AGREE! The hunt is one (of several) great parts to this hobby! It is
sooool cooool to find a machine that no one else has reported (like a
couple of the Old Town San Diego machines I found when working on the
newspaper article). For me, it kinda' breaks down into 2 areas...
First, there is the "I'll only be in the area (city...) for a day and
need to know where to find the locations. Even with reports like "the
Stone Zoo" I have to find where that machine has been wheeled out that
day...
Second, I have a long drive ahead and stop at places I would not normally
stop - just to get a cold drink (or Starbucks) and check out possible
machine locations. This is how I found the Pea Soup Andersen machine in
Carlsbad. Disneyland is the same way, I went out the night before our
List Meeting, and found that hand krank and was excited about reporting
it to everyone at the breakfast the next day...
So it all depends on how much time I have to look - bottom line, I want
that smashing experience, would prefer to find the machines myself, but
will take all the locations I can get when there is little time to
search... Also, it is nice have locations so I can direct family and
friends there when I am not able to get to these sites... Now THAT might
make an interesting thread - talk about the "family and friend" stories -
you know, the people who love you but still

Again, I must agree. Even with a photocopy of the Knott's Berry
Farm map, with all of the machine locations marked on it, Nikki still
managed to find a new machine! I wish I had a picture of her face when
she discovred it!
Without Gina's map I wouldn't have come across at least two of
the machines and woulda missed tracking down a vampire as well. One of
the machines is on the porch of the Magic Shop which is VERY easy to miss
at night as it's not in a very well lit area. The only reason I knew the
shop was there was the map with the machine location marked on it.
Inside they had a bunch of halloween stuff including a little Dracula
walker is is just way too cool!

I'm almost positive the park opened in October 1979. So 1996 was the
anniversary date. When I was there last in January 1997 the hotel machines
definitely had signs on them that the dies would be removed and destroyed in
October 1997. I don't remember multiple locations for the 13th quarter
either.
