Subject: (elongates) DL Cataloging
Date: 01 Sep 1997 00:41:27 -0700 (PDT)

Okay, I have just finished going thru all of David Tomita's past
DL penny lists that I can get hold of as well as the other DL penny
reports from the newsgroups and have worked the known existing coins into
my cataloging system. THIS IS A PRELIMINARY LIST!!! The code numbers
and titles will very likely be changed. DO NOT keep this list for
future refernece as you will most likely only confuse yourself and
others. This list is a stepping stone to completing an actual list (hopefully
finalized at the DL meet this coming Sunday (9/7).

I am posting this list in the hopes that anyone one with
Disneyland and/or Disneyland Hotel coins will compare the list to what
they have and see if I'm missing anything. Opinions on name changes or
ordering changes are both welcome and encouraged. That's why I'm doing
this. I have done my best to recreate the order the coins were issued.
If you know something's wrong please let me know wether it be in the
order presented, orientation, text, image, etc. If you have coins from
DL/DLH that are not on this list please let me know. Specifically if
anyone knows of other limited edition coins (CM/AP/?) this is VERY
important info for me. NOTE: This list does NOT include WDW or Disneyana
coins. These will have seperate lists. Only those issued in the park/hotel
(wether publicly or privately).

Thanx in advance for your time and assistance. Responses are welcome
via e-mail or on the list (but if you reply to the list PLEASE only quote
the relevant parts as this is a VERY long post). A list of unknown info will
be in a follow-up post. And now, the list:

Okay, here's the stuff I was unable to glean from other sources:

9/29/96 Kevin Christensen reported to r.a.d.p. that he had found (amongst
other known issues) a quarter with Phoebus (from Hunchback). Nikki
reports that she believes she has seen one as well though she can't find
it in her collection. Any one know anything about this issue?

For a long time David Tomita had the possibility of a vertical Chip 'n'
Dale penny listed. Anyone know anything about this?

DIS-DL-97, 98, 99 - Are thes pennies? Quarters? Orientation?

What's the difference between DIS-DL-22/22a and DIS-DL-98?

DIS-DL-10/10a - What came first? Thick or thin? Also what are the ear
measurements?

DIS-DL-60 thru DIS-DL-63a - What's the differences between the 'a' and
the non-lettered

Installation dates (month/year) needed for:

DIS-DL-4 thru DIS-DL-26
DIS-DL-10a
DIS-DL-22a
DIS-DL-97 thru DIS-DL-99

Removal Dates (month/year) needed for:

DIS-DL-10
DIS-DL-10a
DIS-DL-22
DIS-DL-24
DIS-DL-79 thru DIS-DL-81
DIS-DLH-1

I have all of the other install/remove dates. Thanx again for
your time and assistance. Answers on or off-list are fine.

Peace,

Aahz

Clarification: These are the Toy Story issues. I am considering the
machine located in the Starcade to be the non-lettered issues as this
machine is still there and the machine that was in the Toy Story Funhouse
(2/96 to 6/96) to be the 'a' issues.

Sure, Meg, Peg and Phoebus are on quaters at Disneyland. I've traded for a
few of them. I'll send you details if you still need to catalog them.

I believe that's Meg, Peg, and Herc. Never saw a Phoebus

I was just scanning thru Kathy's FAQ's, and came upon the methods of cleaning
pennies... sounds very MESSY.... Has anyone tried "erasing" their pennies? I
found out they polish up perfectly with an ordinary pencil eraser. (I found
this out by mistake at the office one day, trying to get a stubborn spot off
of one of my coins.) It's very quick, too! Anyone have any cautions about
this I should know about???

The old die (which I think is a much nicer one) has the 'c Disney' in
front of the gun barrell. The new one has 'c Disney' above the gun
barrell. There are two machines in Frontierland with this new die. One
in the Pioneer Mercantile (one coin) and one in front of the shooting
gallery (three coins). I can't see any difference in the two coins.
I'll bring the old one to show you the difference next Sunday. I can't
describe the differences well enough here.

This quarter is located in Critter Country at Teddi Barra's, not at the
hotel. It is Machine #012431 - B

Also comments from another post of yours. I'm afraid I can't give you
much information about dates, but I do know that I saw 97, 98 & 99
before I saw 94, 95, and 96. (of course that could be because the
machine was down (off stage as they say) on the day I happened to be
there.

I believe 22 was removed and replaced by 22a either late last year or
early this, but can't remember any closer than that.

79 thru 81 must have been removed between the holidays last year and
March of this year, as I don't remember seeing them then.

Wish I could be of more help, but that's the best I can do. I'll keep
racking my brain and see what I can come up with.

Meg, Peg and Herc are in one machine. The Phoebus quarter was
reported before Hercules cam out in a machine with Quasimodo and
Esmerelda. I have seen neither Hunchback or Hercules, but I believe
Phoebus is from Phoebus is from Hunchback.

Mickey, if you've got a Phoebus I could certainly use the details
and a scan/photocopy if possible. Thanx.

Thank you for your timely and detailed reply, Nancy. Listed
below are a few explanations and those still considered questionable. If
anyone can confirm or refute any of the below, please let me know. The
corrections Nancy made that re not below (mostly typos - one can only
stare at this info so long without going braindead 8-) have been changed.

Haven't seen either of these yet, need confirmation that new one
is has 'c' above and not below as David reports on his web site.

The new coin from the new machine is catalogged as DIS-DL-98
Mickey w/ Pistol. If we still can't find a difference after the DL meet,
then this will likely become DIS-DL-22b

> I'll bring the old one to show you the difference next Sunday. I can't

That would be great. One of the reasons for this catalog is so
that the differences will be recorded somewhere and people won't have to
describe them each time they discuss the coins.

No, I'm not 8-( I have seen them w/ "Disneyland" and have seen
Mickey at Bat without, but that could be the DPH issue. In David's lists
he listed these as "no label" for the first four months. Then suddenly,
without comment, added the "Disneyland". This is one of the major
unsolved mysteries.

The cataloging is primarily topically based. These two issues
have the DLH as they're topic, so they get listed as DLH. This is one of
the odd things about the cataloging system. But, there are many issues
out there (not necessarily Disney) that depict one thing/place but come
from another entirely. So, in the larger picture it makes more sense to
list these as DLH. DIscussion on this decision is more then welcome.

> but I do know that I saw 97, 98 & 99 before I saw 94, 95, and 96.

There was a large gap in David's lists (11/96 to 6/97). Both of
these machines showed up during that time frame, so I just guessed. They
have been switched, so if anyone can confirm/refute these install dates,
please do so.

Can we narrow this down a little more? By 'holidays' are we
talking Christmas? The coins are dated '96, so perhaps they carried them
'til New Years? The more specific I can get doing this among coin
enthusiasts, the easier it will be to get help from the general DL fans
at a.d.d.

You've been a world of help, Nancy. If you do come up with

The eraser method came up here on the list, I wasn't aware it
hadn't made it to Kathy's FAQ. I've tried it with great succes, though I
don't clean most of my elongates in any way (too lazy). Jeff Dixon showed
me a couple where he had used an eraser just on the high points, leaving
the flat surfaces dark, and it they looked wonderful!

I can't think of anything that couls go wrong here. Unless you
were to press hard enough to 'snap' off some of the fine lines. But this
is purely conjecture on my part.

Bothe are fair prices, maybe a little on the high side depending
on which particular design they are.

>

Yep, you got that right.

> you can see the prices. Sooo, these should be at the high end of the
> pricing scale...

But you're a little off here. One would think they would be at
the topof the price ranges due to their history and age, but in fact they
are not. As I said, the above prices are fair for most WCE issues, but
many elongates have a fair price that is MUCH higher. Why? As always, I
can only offer my opinion, but here's what I think:

1) They're really dull coins. Text only and plain at that.

2) "Yesterday's Elongateds" pictures 24 different WCE issues.
However, it counts only 7 different designs (the rest being variants).
Personally, I'd drop this down to four different designs (the rest
variants). Most of them are listed as rarity 2 (some 3). However that's
for each individual variant. Most collectors aren't going to be
concerned about variants and will consider the first 13 coins to be a
single issue. What happens to that rarity 2 rating for each coin when
you consider all of them as 1 coin? It becomes almost common.

3) I doubt there is anyone currently living who remembers
attending the WCE in 1893. Which means that all the pieces saved as
momentos have likely returned to the market.

My main point here is that while the above prices are fair and it
IS neat to have one of the 'first' elongates (I have two) don't snatch
one up the moment you see it. They are not that hard to find and prices
vary greatly, so think about this purchase at least as much as you would
any other oldie purchase. And don't judge all prices by the cost for
these coins. There are many issues that are far more rare and in demand
(thus, more expensive).

Ya know this just irritates me. Aside from the fact that I'm the
sort that still picks up pennies in the street, this is the very attitude
that is making it more and more likely Congress will pull the penny all
together! I know there's all the arguments about retailers rolling
prices up or down to the nearet nicke, but what about US?!? All of a
sudden my 51c a piece hobby is going to become an 80c a piece hobby.
Multiply that by 1500 coins (estimated count including DL trip and WDW set)
and we're talking a price difference of $435 assuming all coins purchased
at issue price!!! We can't let 'em do away with the penny and "throwing
away" pennies is just going to make it more likely!!!

Check per above! I have one of each. The "Disney c" placement is correct.
The coins also differ in that the older one has an appearance much like
that of a rubber stamp. The newer is "shaped" and 3-D in it's look and
design.

Sorry, to report, but, I believe this machine has been retired. It had the
DLH monorail quarter, Sleeping Beautie's Castle quarter, and Full Mickey (H).
It was last at Teddy Barra's Arcade after is was moved from Main Street
Arcade. Last seen about one month ago. Not to be found as of this date.

According to my records the machine was pulled sometime between
november last and june of this year. Can anyone narrow this down.

FYI - my cataloging is intended to include all coins issued, not
just current issues. David Tomita's web site:

...is the place to check for what coins are currently available
and the current machine locations.

Sorry, but I get confused easily. You're confirming here that
the new coin has the 'c' ABOVE the barrell, right?

No, I'm not 8-( I have seen them w/ "Disneyland" and have seen
Mickey at Bat without, but that could be the DPH issue. In David's lists
he listed these as "no label" for the first four months. Then suddenly,
without comment, added the "Disneyland". This is one of the major
unsolved mysteries.

Both currently exist.
The design is very similar in both. One has no text except for (c) Disney and
has a complete dot border save for a eurolink e. It is part of a 3 set with
skateboard/sunglass Mickey and rollerskate Minnie.
The other Baseball Mickey has the text Disneyland at the bottom and a
slightly, but similar Mickey. The dot border is broken by the text, hand, ear
and foot. Eurolink e in the usual spot and (c) Disney centered above
Disneyland. It is in a set with a similar Soccer Mickey and Tennis Goofy.

I know this is true for the Baseball Mickey coin (the no-text
version is DIS-DPH-1), but have you ever seen either of the others (Tennis
Goofy or Soccer Mickey) without "Disneyland" on them? I still haven't
found confirmation on these two. If either of these can be confirmed then
I will assume the set of three were originally issued without text.

Hmmmm, so if Congress kills the penny, are they talking about bringing
back to the Treasury ALL pennies in circulation? If current pennies were
left in circulation then we'd all be in good shape (cause we all use
pre-82's, yes?)...

Now, if they take away my pre-82's, then I will have to purchase
uncirculated pennies from coin dealers (which I have done anyway)... And
hey, smashed dimes, quarters, etc won't have the Zinc problem. Don't get
me wrong, I want the penny to stay in circulation, but I'm not using
current pennies (thanks to Jeff Dixon gettin' me smart on pre-82's).

Anyone know if the Canadian government is thinking about doing away with
their pennies?

Slowly they'll pull 'em yeah. And I'm sure all these wonderful
tourist spots are just going to love having a mchine that becomes
exponentially less useful as each day passes. We're talking the end of
the penny machine within six months.

This reminds me of something I've been meaning to ask. Current
silver (colored) coinage is called clad. What metals are in there? Are
we going to have the long-term deterioration problems that have been
theorized with the zinc pennies?

Soooo, there will be a market of CHEAP penny smashing machines, that I
could pick up for say, a nickel or two? If penny machines did go away,
what would that do to the 'value' of our collections?

What are the REAL chances Congress will be able to kill off something as
loved as the Lincoln penny?

Infoseek found 85,432 pages containing the word penny! Congress may be
thinking about this, but I would guess as they get further into it, it
will not be as easy as they think.

Aahz, you do raise a good point that I have been thinking about. Many
(and I mean MANY) materials have sulphur and other acidic chemicals in
them. People that have fine silver buy special cloth bags that have none
of these chemicals, and they keep their silver in these bags (guess I
learned something from my parents -- the antique dealers!). Also, there
are 'archival' quality supplies for photographs, and other valuables.

Soooo, I got to wondering about what chemicals are in the 2x2's I just
got from TEC? If there are chemicals in there that are going to slowly
start eating away at my collection, then I want to find some 2x2's that
are 'archival' quality. I want to hand down my collection some day, in
good condition... Perhaps Ray Dillard could tell us where the 2x2's are
made and we could investigate...

It IS a crime IN Canada! Canada, last time I checked, does not extradite
US citizens (or anyone else) for smashing Canadian coins outside of their
borders. The US has no laws against smashing other country's coins (at
least as far as internet searches of US Law indicates). The only illegal
act is smashing any coins in Canada, and I don't think I'll ever do that!

I've been off-line for the weekend, so pardon me if this has been said

replying as I go. (okay, disclaimer stuff off) To make erasing your

polishing you will go. It works great I might add.

Now there's a thought I hadn't considered! That makes ONE point
for the 'remove the penny' side.

Well, what *I* consioder value wouldn't change at all.
Financially, I doubt it would make probably make little difference,
numismatists already consider us evil for 'destroying' and 'defacing'
coins. (Okay, 'evil' is an exaggeration). Long-term I don't se it
affecting anything although it does decrease the chance of rerolls.

Every year for at least the last 15 a bill has been introduced to
remove the penny from circulation. A lot of people support the idea (and
there are valid points on both sides). I'd say it's probably gonna happen
by 2010 and most likely sooner. Odds are it'll barely make the paper
before the vote occurs. The REALLY sad thing is that a large portion of
the numimatic community also supports the idea, so the people willing to
actuvely campaign against it are relatively few.

Archival quality 2x2s are available for traditional coinage,
though each holder may well cost more then the elongate you're going to
put into it. The TEC 2x2s are certainly not archival. But then, we're
talking about metal here, not paper. I don't think you've got to worry
about your collection making it to little Bert. I doubt the zincs will
even have a prob by then. the zincs may have a prob by the time he passes
them down, but I just look at old traditional coinage and don't really
forsee a problem that's worth the cost of stopping it with elongates.

My research shows the suspected change occuring in July 1996.

Here's the scoop on these coins. (I have some and I traded some to
Nancy as well- mine are for trade for other discontinued Disney coins).
These were Frank Brazzell dies. When Frank died, they
passed to Willy. Willy rolled a small number of them and then the die
cracked (or somesuch, not really sure).
Those rolled by Willy have his 'custom' 3-d reverse (and MAY have
his initals 'WCM' on them. I BELIEVE the numbers were 100 cents, 75
nickels, 50 dimes rolled by Willy though I can't find my notes on this
at the moment.

To sum up: They weren't issued at DL, but the dies are no longer
in existence (which is more then we know about Eurolink's removed
machines).

I know Disneyana conventions are not Disney sponsored, but they do have
EC's. I have 3 Disneyana quarters from 1995.

Do you (Chris) have a Code for these yet (DA perhaps?).

I'm not sure if these were Eurolink produced or not. Can someone that has
been to a Disneyana Convention shed some more light on these? Did they
have them in 96 and 97 (and prior to 95)? Were they all quarters?

Those were actually issued at the WDW con, BTW. Assuming they're
the ones I think they are.

> Do you (Chris) have a Code for these yet (DA perhaps?).

I'm thinking DC - Disney Convention, but haven't finalized this
yet. I don't want to tie myself to the term 'Disneyana' on these within
the system as there are several different clubs and I don't know how many
of them use the term 'Disneyana' (or how many issue coins, for that
matter). For all I know 'Disneyana' is a trademarked term (like I've ever
worried about trademarks!) 'owned' by one specific club.

I have the same questions!!! This will probably be the next
section of the Disney catalog that I complete. (WDW is gonna be a bear
cause Kenny Cottrell posted his updates directly to the web, bypassing the
ngs and thus they aren't archived anywhere 8-( )

Hey everybody,

Alright. First off, I guess I should say sorry to the list in general. I
received
a second mention about replying and leaving too much stuff. Normally I put
[snip] in
my posts, but I guess I'm still quoting too much. I'll try harder for the
people who
pay per line...

> Well, i hooked up with Jeff and Deidre Dixon a short time ago at
>Winchester Mystery House.
[snip]

On meeting with Chris, it was quite fun! I have to say my collection isn't
in an organized fashion
yet - it's in a binder with some in 2x2 paper cases. Otherwise, I've tried
(somewhat unsuccessfully)
to tape the coins into each holder. The major problem is the tape doesn't
stay and the coins seem to
get pushed up against the tape. (For the people on the list that don't
know - it's really bad to have
ECs get stuck by tape. Some of it just doesn't come off.)

I have a stack of 2x2 holders that I need to put my collection in - but
there just hasn't been time.
*sigh*

Anyways, the Winchester Mystery House was pretty cool - even if the tour
guide seemed a little phony.
Just as Chris said, it was quite cool to have people wandering up and
looking at what we were doing.
I have to wonder if the younger people that I meet end up being more
serious collectors afterwards.
Chris has some great elongates -- I believe I made out a wee bit better on
the trade.
It just goes to show that he and I aren't in it to be "EC millionaires."

Oh! Deirdre and I figured out the scoop behind the comment I made too.
This applies to vampire
and (ex-)vampire hunters mostly:
I meant Niki was doing a good job if not only Chris was a slave to her -
but that Chris also gave up
hunting vampires. Alright, it was a bit cryptic...

Darn, my lava lamp burned out. I'll have to get a replacement bulb.

Finally, for the people who wanted to know, the interview went extremely
well. We're making the decision
next week - but I think a west coast move is "in the cards."

We're bummed that the DL trip was next weekend. Please try to take pictures!

Hopefully we'll get to the next one. :)

Subject: (elongates) Lengthy Hello
Date: 02 Sep 1997 10:27:33 -0700

I'm new to this mail list and I thought I'd introduce myself before
engaging in conversation. I apologize for the length in advance but it
is exciting to know one is not alone.

I'm David Tomita and I am an...an elongaholic. <hides face in hands>
Smashed. Rolled. Whatever. I'm one.

I have been hopelessly addicted to collecting elongated coins especially
the Disney ones whether they be from Disneyland or Walt Disney World.
You may have seen my website. Am I obsessed? If so, I no longer feel
alone <smiles at present company>

It all started long ago in 1993 when I became a Disneyland Annual
Passholder. When you go often you notice a lot of things that the
casual visitor might not, like these strange machines all over that
press your penny flat.

I started collecting the least expensive souvenir I could find at
Disneyland - these pressed coins. Soon I started to seek them out so
that I could have them all. <furtively glances about> I think Disney
was on to me because they would move the machines around on me. I'm
sure it was a plot to make me work harder to collect them. But the
hobby only cost me pennies ;-) . So then they started placing these
nickel machines to extract more coins from me. Ha, ha, ha! That
wouldn't stop me. Then they hid some over in the hotel area but I found
them! So then they put these quarter machines out there after finding
out the nuts, uh, fans in Florida would plunk down cold hard cash for
them. Bahahahaha!!! I can give them my hard earned cash just like the
next sucker. Bahahaha!!! <slap, slap> Sorry. Where was I?

So I started a list so I could keep track of how many there were and
where they were kept because the list Disney kept on their database was
not very detailed and not very up-to-date (maybe it is now). Was I
sick? Don't answer that. <tries to hides stacks of photos of every
presser, location, etc.>

Maybe I wasn't alone in my obsession. I tried searching websites and
such for these...these smashed coins but there wasn't anything that I
could find in 1994/95 and I didn't know exactly what they were
"officially" called. Was there no support group out there? <lonely
echo>

I would have to come out of my nutshell as it were to find out if I was
not alone. Maybe if I announced my, uh, fascination, others would feel
free to admit their, uh, hobby too. I had found other Disney fans,
maybe there were Disney elongated coin collectors too. So I started to
post a listing of the Disneyland coins to the now defunct
rec.arts.disney newsgroup. Lo and behold, folks would e-mail me about
them. I was not alone! Oh, happy, happy, joy, joy!

It is good to know I am not nuts. Okay, maybe I'm nuts but I'm not
alone. Okay, maybe alone but they let me out for exercise. And I'm not
recovering, in fact, I think I'm a vector for infecting others. My
Disney friends indulge me. Thanks in advance for indulging me on this
lengthy introduction. I'll try to be more succinct in the future.

Sincerely,
David Tomita

But you forget, the penny machine can be converted to a nickel machine.
Change the coin inserter and the dies and we'd no longer have to worry about
steelies or zinc.

Welcome David...where have you been?
As you mentioned, your postings to RAD-(RIP) infected others with squooshed
penny fever.
A couple of years ago, I saw your list on RAD and thought that it would be
fun to try to collect all of the pennies. (After your three dozenth visit to
DL, you start appreciating the more mundane things in the park) So, some
$40-some later, I had a bulging pocket and an addiction to elongates. My
family and friends quietly tolerate my hobby because, after all, it is a lot
less costly than my other option, America's Cup Racing.
So, welcome and enjoy your bulging mailbox.

Yeppers, these are the Disneyland Pacific Hotel issues (DL-DPH-1

seal with the zinc porobs then pay an extra .29c per coin, personally. I

After looking over my three coins (tentatively numbererd DIS-DL-10 and
DIS-DL-10a) I can definitely see a difference in them. There may be a
slight difference in the size of the ears, but what is most evident to
me is that the ears seem to be puffy (stand up) on one and a flatter
image on the other. My problem is that the two that are alike are both
pre-'82s and the one that is different is post '82. I wonder if the
difference could be the coin it was pressed on.

It's going to take better eyes than mine to make this final
determination. They will be with me on Sunday, and I hope we can decide
if there really are two different dies or not.

90 lines -- ON THE VALUE OF PRICE GUIDES
(C) copyright 1997 by Michael E. Marotta <mercury@well.com>

"How much is the 87-S?"
"That's thirty-seven dollars."
"Thirty-seven? Greysheet is twenty-nine."
"OK. Go buy it from them."

Red Book, Blue Book, Greysheet, Trends, Teletrade... what a coin
is "worth" depends on why you want to know. What ANYTHING is
"worth" depends on the CONTEXT of the question.

(1) It is a rule of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting
Practices) that every item is always carried on your books at
purchase price. Thus, everything you buy is always worth what
you paid for it.

(2) Without a BUYER, there is no sale price. So, a coin is worth
what you can sell it for.

(3) Prices change over time. A coin (or anything else) can be
worth what it will cost you to replace it.

(4) A coin (or anything else) can be said to be worth what you
would give up to keep it.

The idea that you can look at an authoritative listing and know
what an item is "worth" is one of the many negative affects of
public schooling. People who are insulated from markets are
prevented from learning how markets work. Price guides, whether
the Red Book or Greysheet, or the NYSE listings in the business
section of your newspaper, only record the past. Whether the
past is indicative of the future is arguable.

If you see a coin you want and the price guides show it at some
other price, then you can learn a lot by actively shopping for
the coin, actually looking for sellers at the price you think is
more correct. You may find that some coins (small US Gold or
certain Hard Times Tokens, for instance) are unavailable except
at an arbitrarily large mark-up over the published prices. For
ancient coins, this is especially true because each coin is more
clearly unique. (In theory, every coin is unique.)

It is only the commodity nature of US Type coins that makes the
spectrum of price guides possible. You might also find that
other coins can be had for impressively less than the published
guides claim. Over time, prices change. Since the supply of US
Type coins is constant, it is the demand that changes most.
Coins that were hot last year go unsold this year. Ancient coins
are more subject to changing supplies as new hoard material
affects the price.

There are only two ways to sell anything: greed and fear.
Sometimes they come together in a moment of agoric beauty. You
see a nice coin but it is priced way above Greysheet. If you
pass this one up, can you buy another? If you buy this one, will
you discover that you could have bought another for less?
Decisions, decisions...

The only question to which you have an objective answer is this:
Do you want the money in your pocket more than you want the coin?
What somebody on another continent claims that their friends
somewhere else paid for the coin yesterday is irrelevant.

To determine which seller has the best price for you right now
(whether "now" is measurable in seconds or months) depends on
knowing the markets, i.e, knowing the material, the buyers and
sellers. Knowing the price guides is part of this. Red Book,
Greysheet, Trends, etc., are only _editorial_ _approximations_
based on the _reported_ transactions.

Whether a buyer or a seller can be said to drive a transaction
depends on psychology, not economics. Two dealers with the same
material will have different experiences. Two collectors seeking
the same material will have different experiences. You can buy
under Greysheet and sell over Redbook if you have charisma.
People who are basically unlikeable can have great agoric
charisma. The bottom line is: "it all depends..."

Subject: (elongates) Virg Marshall's Flyer
Date: 03 Sep 1997 22:44:55 -0400

Hi Y'all,

I'm pretty much a lurker on this list with little or nothing to say most of
the time. I do enjoy, however, your energetic discourse about elongates.
Neat!

Today I got a flyer from Virg Marshall, aka The Penny Merchant. On the
back of his flyer are a whole bunch of elongates cents. I thought you
might like to hear about this. His prices are 55c per coin singly, 25c per
coin for 50 coins and $10 per complete series (as outlined below) which are
mounted in 2x2s. Here's what Virg offers:

1. Great American Steam Engine Series - 20 coins
2. Prehistoric Dinosaur Series - 20 coins
3. World War II Airplane Series - 20 coins
4. Assorted topics, e.g.,
It's a girl
It's a boy
23rd Psalm
God is Love
Appollo 13
Scout Motto
Jesus loves you
VFW
5. 50th Anniversary elongates rolled out of 1941-1945 cents
V-J day
V-E day
Battle of Iwo Jima
D-day
Pearl Harbor

The last bunch (WW II) are more expensive -- $1 each or five for 65c each.

So, what do you think? Are these any good? Very common? Unusual? If you
want to contact Virg he's at 116 West D Street, Wymore, NE 68466, phone
402-645-3341, fax 402-645-3342.

All the best to you,

Wow, this is great info! Thanks Paul! The planes and trains sound
great... I appreciate you taking the time to share this info and I will
contact Virg soon.

THANKS again!

(PS: You all see me coming in from another email address, since my
creightoniii account is down. We have been having rolling brown outs in
my part of San Diego county and it took our ISP's fiber optics off line.
I was told TUESDAY was the earliest they could repair it -- YIKES!)

Hi,

I finally pulled together enough wheaties and other pre-1982's for the
remaining sets. Everything went out today.
He should receive the package tomorrow or Saturday at the latest.

I'll keep you all posted as soon as I have more information.

Subject: (elongates) Disneyland Update
Date: 04 Sep 1997 09:49:12 -0700

Greetings Everyone,

Well, the big day is almost here - The
Elongates_Mailing_List_1st_Meeting@Disneyland.FUN

If you are going to join us and have not RSVP'd for Breakfast or Lunch,
please send an email to me at creightoniii@home.com (yup, my 'real'
account is back and working today). We need RSVP's only so we can get
reservations in to the restaurants.

If anyone needs the original Invitation just let me know. We start off
Sunday morning with a Breakfast (outside the park), then into Disneyland,
Lunch/Trading at the DL Hotel, and then back to the park.

The Weather Report -- It has been warm (OK, HOT) in Southern California,
with high humidity). You will want to dress for the heat, and possibly
bring some other clothes that you can keep in a locker or your car.
Sunscreen is a good idea, along with a hat (or buy a hat in the park and
have your email address embroidered on it). Hmmm, wish Pete had a Gift
Shop at the Squished Penny Museum (Wash DC) with some nice EC polo
shirts... 8-)

Soooo, dress for warm weather, bring your tradin' stock and some coins to
smash. I will be bringing a Digital Camera so we can share some of the
day with people that will be with us in 'EC spirit' rather than in
person. As Tigger says -- "Ta Ta For Now" (TTFN)...

Date: 05 Sep 1997 00:16:16 -0700 (PDT)

Greetings and Salutations!

Okay, here's the recently revised, but still PRELIMINARY
Disneyland list. Again, this is NOT the final version!!!! These numbers
WILL be changing. I already have confirmation of one coin that will
probably be the new DIS-DL-1, thus changing every other number. Do not
worry, the final list WILL be posted here and made available to anyone
who wants one.

I'm posting this revised list primarily for those heading to DL
on Sunday. I will be leaving for LA (and thus be offline) in about 8
hours. If you discover an error of some sort, or have a
correction/suggestion feel free to either post it to the list (quoting
ONLY the relevant portion) or directly to me in e-mail. I'll be back
on-line late Monday nite or Tuesday. If you're coming to the meet, and
are interested in helping with the cataloging, please print this revised
list out as it is what I am now working off of.

Thanx again for all your help everyone!

Peace,

Aahz

have that show zink and want pre 82 on them. Also noticed some that I
have bought over the last year that were not on any lists so will post

Hi Kathy!

You could have purchased a LOT of EC's for the price of a car. But, if you
will be using it in your search for elongateds, then, I guess, it's ok. :-)

Hi folks.

There is a Tokyo Disneyland Elongate! This is the first from there that
I know of.

(H) Castle. "1997 Tokyo Disneyland"

It must have been out for awhile since we are nearing the end of 1997.
It doesn't use a US denomination coin but rather a copper token that the
machine supplies for squishing.

If I can get my hands on one (anyone going to Tokyo?), I'll put the
image up at my website. I'll ask my friend who passed this info along
to send me a photocopy of it.

Hello everybody,

I have accepted Electronic Art's offer in San Mateo, California. On
September 24th the moving trucks come to haul our stuff away.
We start cross-country driving on the 25th. One of the cool goals of the
trip across is to rack up lots of trading stock. If
people know of really cool locations, especially ones that no one has
reached yet, let us know in the next day or two. We're trying
to plan out a tip schedule that hits as many penny places as possible.

On October 6th, my e-mail should be active:
jdixon@ea.com

In the meantime, I'm notifying Big Al to ship the pennies either ASAP - or
send them to my mom halfway across.

If we're in the middle of trading (or I owe you big time (Janelle)) -
please let me know if there are specific pennies you're
interested in getting as we make our way across.

This account will become inactive on September 19th. At that time, I'll
remove myself from the list temporarily.

- Jeff

Would you believe I was living in Boulder City (and donated pennies for
that Guinness World Record) at that time, and don't have that elongate?
I sure would like to have it, but I'm afraid I don't have anything in
the Worlds Fair line to offer.

If there's something else you might be interested in, let me know.

Greetings Jeff,

No, the article has not come out yet. I did a follow up interview
yesterday (via phone) so some of the Disneyland info will also appear in
the article. John (the Staff Writer) said he would call me with the
publication date as soon as he has it. Sooooo, if any of the DL people
want to send him their thoughts on the trip, he'd probably love to see
them...

Stay tuned...

Hi, Bert!

Yes, that is the name of the shop right behind Mickey's Toy Box where
you found the machine that made the four new pennies.

Subject: (elongates) Road Trip - Day 1
Date: 11 Sep 1997 22:10:53 -0700 (PDT)

Friday September 5th -

Got my rental car around 8:00 am (which is about when I normally
wake up ;) and finally got out of town around 10:30 or so. Somewhere
around Monterey I realized I had forgotten the CA map I had marked all
the reported and possible machine locations on! (AARRGGHH!!) Luckily I
had remembered to bring the hard copies of the individual reports, so I
was still okay.
I decided to skip over Santa Cruz and Monterey as they are both
within easy day trip distance for me and I can pick those coins up
later. My first coupla stops were around Big Sur, but I came up empty
handed, no one new what I was talking about, and they were pretty sure
there were no such machines in the area. Next on the 'possible' list
was Hearst Castle and San Simeon. Neither the castle itself or any of
the nearby gift shops had a machine. I even checked in the Wood Carving
Museum and Store to no avail.
Undaunted I headed for Morro Bay where Bob Hoff had reported two
machine locations. The first he mentioned was a shop at 333
Embarcadero. Embarcadero is the street that runs along the water and I
found 333 without much difficulty. The shop is in a center called Bob's
and has a big yellow sign that is difficult to miss. The machine,
however, has been moved. I spoke with Bob while he was removing the
fixtures from 333 and moving them across the courtyard to 345
Embarcadero. He informed me that the machine was broken, but that it
would be installed at 345 Embarcadero when it was operating again. I
was able to get a few samples that they had behind the desk though :) It
is a horizontal Sea Otter design.
The other machine Bob reported in Morro Bay is in front of The
Captain's Gift Shop which is a couple blocks South of Bob's on the
opposite side of the street. (I have misplaced the business card, but
will report the actual address when I find it) The machine was on the
porch of the shop and while I was rolling the shopkeeper came out and
asked why I was rolling so many. I gave him the spiel and he invited me
inside. He dumped out his little bag of misrolls and spares and out
tumbled a dozen elongates from other places! He sold me these for a
quarter apiece. Woohoo! Most were from CA and NV with my favorite being
a Bob's Big Boy issue showing Big Boy with the words "Across the street
from Disneyland" around the bottom. Anyone one know if this Bob's still
exists?!? Or when it closed? (Yes, I know the chain went under but we
still have one independent Bob's up here)
Flush with penny excitment I returned to the road and headed for
San Luis Obispo and the Madonna Inn. The Madonna Inn is VERY difficult
to miss from the freeway (101), but the exit is Madonna Rd. There seems
to be some confusion on the LK pages about this, but that should make it
easy to find. Somehow I got the impression that there were three
machines at the Madonna, but there are only two. I asked about a half
dozen employees and all confirmed there are only two. One is in the main
lobby (NOT regisration) between the coffee shop/restaraunt/Ladies Shop.
This machine has the Madonna Inn logo. The other is downstairs in front
of the the Gourmet Shop and has a picture of the Inn. The lady in the
Gourmet Shop is the Eurolink contact so if you have any questions ask
her. The logo machine was broken, but I managed to get some extras from
her as well.
On the road again I stopped at a few small antique shops but
found no elongates (or vampires for that matter :). I pulled into
Beullton and Andersen's Pea Soup just before 5:00, but their machine was
down and no one knew about extras so I headed into Solvang.
Unfortunately Solvang starts closing down at 5, so I was only able to
locate two machines. The Viking machine is in front of the Solvang
Clothing Company at 1651 Copenhagen. The windmill machine is in The
Snack Shop which is located in the back of a small shopping center at the
end of Copenhagen across Alibal Street. Unfortunately the shop was
closed so I couldn't get any 8-(
By the time I tracked these down it was edgin near 6 o' clock and
I was supposed to meet up with Nikki at 7:00. So, I skipped over Santa
Barbara and headed straight for Pasadena. I would been pretty close to
ontime, too, but didn't count on traffic at 7:30pm. (Only in LA!!) I
ended up arriving at her friend's house (who had graciously offered to
let me crash there) a little after eight and spent the rest of the
evening doing my best to embarass Lady Nikki in front of her best friend
<eg>
That's about it for Friday, but stay tuned for day two....

Saturday, September 6th-

Well having been up late (and both Nikki and I having a severe
allergy to mornings 8-) Nikki and I didn't get moving on Saturday until a
little after noon. Nikki had discovered on the day before I headed South
that she could get free tix to Universal Studios so we decided to
postpone our stop there until my next trip.
Instead we headed for Pacific Park at the Santa Monica Pier. There
are, as reported, three machines on the pier. The first is the horizontal
with the pier pictured and the Santa Monica banner. This machine is located
next to one of the carnival games (rings on coke bottles - BIG Scooby Doo
prize currently). The second machine is in the main arcade and is a
horizontal with the Pacific Park logo. The third machine is outside a shop
called The Ink Spot and has the octopus on it.
After enjoying the pier and the ocean for a while we headed for
Knott's Berry Farm. There are 13 machines at KBF. Gina had provided us
with a map with 12 of the locations marked and Nikki found the 13th.
Many of the machines blend in well to the suroundings, so Gina's map was
a godsend. Locations and descriptions will be heading Bert's way shortly
so they should be up on his page in the near future. If you need/want
details just ask and I'll be happy to share.
We spent several hours at KBF finding the machines and taking in
some rides then headed for the Motel to try and rest up for the next
day. Stay tuned for details of day three - aka DISNEYLAND!!!

Sunday, Septembre 7th -
DISNEYLAND MEET!!!

Not surprisingly, Nikki and I got a late start for breakfast, but
we managed to arrive at Belisle's somewhere near 9:00. After a quick
round of introductions: Bert, Diedre (Bert's wife), Alex (Bert and
Deidre's son), Elbert Smith, Nikki and myself (Apologies if I got any
names wrong!) we ordered and started in on conversation. Bert handed out
some special coins he had managed to scrounge up (Yes all this and freebies
too!) and conversation centered around the day ahead and many of the same
topics we often discuss here on the list. It was GREAT to have people to
talk/share/brag with.
After breakfast Elbert had to head home and take care of part of
his 'honey-do' list, but he promised to return for lunch and the trade
session. Alex was ready for a morning nap so Deidre took him back to the
hotel and Bert, Nikki and I headed for the park. After waiting a few
minutes in front of the gate we entered and headed straight to ...... the
ATM! Yep, wallets were empty, but pennies were waiting. Nikki grabbed a
couple rolls of quarters without difficulty at the bank, so this IS possible.
Next stop was the train depot to collect the Disneyland RR coin.
This has got to be the oldest coin still available in the park. The
machine is obviously from Eurolink's early days. While I was rolling my
first DL elongates and we spoke of general penny topics a very nice lady
jumped into the conversation and I suddenly realized that we had found
John and Nancy! We were running slightly behind schedule (isn't that
what schedules are for?), but they were waiting for us in the train
depot. After more brief introductions we headed off to continue the quest.
Bert had been in the park collecting the night before and Nikki,
John and Nancy are regular visitors, so I was the only one rolling coins
that day. Probably a good thing as it still took a solid two hours for
me to roll two sets and I didn't even make it to all the machines before
lunch! Everyone got along great with conversation focusing on DL and, of
course, elongates. Sometime around noon we started heading out of the
park to make it to the hotel in time for the trade session.
Meeting back up in the lobby of the DLH we also managed to be
found by Gina and her friend (sorry, I'm blanking on her name :( ).
After a little confusion and a fair amount of wandering (forty pounds of
pennies gets awfully heavy in that heat) we ended up at Stromboli's for
lunch.
I thought we asked for a table for ten, but we got a table for
eight. We ordered and just as the food arrived and the coins started to
come out Elbert and his son (another name I don't remember, sorry)
arrived followed shortly by Corey and Emily Wylde and Jim Thorpe. By
this time collections and trade stock were moving around thoroughly and
coins were changing hands all over the place. The rest is chaos,
wonderful chaos, but chaos. It was great!!!
I THINK I got the chance to talk and trade with everyone there.
Everyone helped smooth out my DL Catalog (final list to be posted this
weekend) and Corey showed me a couple of older issues I was unaware of.
A number of topics were covered in my conversations: machine locations,
choice of coins to roll, TEC, value, trading theory, etc. I have no idea
what I traded away (too much going on to deal in anything but raw
numbers) but I managed to pick up several no longer available DL coins
from the Wootens, a number of TEC and coin show issues from Corey, some
California issues from Gina, a bunch of San Deigo and a few hawaii from
Bert and some WDW issues from Jim.
After a couple of hours the restaraunt was closing and we were
down to a small group which headed over to the Wooten's room. Bert, Jim,
John and Nancy, Nikki and myself spent another hour and half or more over
there discussing elongates in general and DL issues specifically.
Another coupla trades were made, then Nikki and I headed back to the
park. I hadn't been there in over 10 years and didn't get a chance to do
anything but collect on my first couple hours in the morning. I don't
know how long the rest stayed and talked, but they weren't showing any
signs of tiring when Nikki and I bowed out.
Back at the park I found the machines I had missed in the
morning, we went on a few rides, then watched Fantasmic! This show
wasn't around last time I was there, but it is awesome. I had jammed the
Hunchback quarter machine on my morning visit and it wasn't repaired by
closing, so I will have to get those on my next trip down. Also I
somehow managed to entirely miss the Pocohontas machine, although I hit
the sports machine twice. Oops!
All in all I have to say it was an amazing day! Everyone was
really nice, the trading was hot and heavy, and we were at Disneyland!
Stay tuned for details of day four....

Monday, September 8th -

Monday I dropped Nikki off at work around noonish (yep we were
late again ;) and headed north on I-5. As Magic Mountain approached I
suddenly found my car pulling to the right and it ended up in the Magic
Mountain parking lot, so I just HAD to go in and collect more pennies ;)
I found five triple machines for a total of 12 pennies and 3 quarters.
Specifics will be sent to Bert as usual.
Back on the road I realized my only planned stop was Harris
Ranch, so I just went into auto-pilot mode and spent the ride reliving
the weekend. The machine at Harris Ranch is located in the gift shop
near the restaraunt, but was down (thanx Eurolink ;) and they didn't have
any extras.
I had planned on stopping by both Santa Nella (there's a Pea Soup
Andersen's there) and Casa de Fruita on my way back, but lack of sleep
was finally catching up with me and I headed straight home.
Arriving safely I didn't even take the time to unload the car but
headed straight to bed for some much needed rest.

Stay tuned for a summation and the things I forgot in the other
posts...

Omissions -

Not surprisingly, I forgot a few things in my rather lengthy
previous posts. So, here we go:

Friday: Also stopped in Pismo Beach. I asked a young kid who was
rollerblading near the pier if he knew where the machine was and he
pointed me in the right direction. The machine is in a sortof mini-mall
right next to the pier called Pismo Boardwalk Plaza. It's at the very
end of Pomeroy. If you have trouble finding it ask any of the locals
where the arcade is as it's right down the street. The machine is in
front of one of the shops inside the mall.

Saturday: Nikki and I stopped by the Hollywood Wax Museum and Ripley's
on our way to Knott's. The Wax Museum machine is right inside the lobby
so you can wander up to it without paying. Unfortunately it was broken
and the main gift shop was closed, so no extras. The Ripley's machine is
also in the lobby (Ripley's lobby of course) and was working. These are
the two oldest looking machines I have seen. They didn't have any
company name visible, but the machines look like they're from the 70s at
least and the header cards gave me the impression of the 50s.
Oh, did I mention I managed to jam the Hammerhead machine at
Knott's ;)

Summation -

This whole trip was great! I've met five people from the list so
far and all have been great people. It's going to take me several weeks
to catalog all the coins I received on the trip, so I'm going to be out
of the trade scene for a little while. I should be notifying those of
you who 'placed orders' with me of what I have for you tomorrow or
Saturday. I also owe several people for coins you have sent me and will
get you an updated trade list ASAP.
I will be back down in the LA area the weekend of October 4th.
Nikki and I will be going on the Universal Studios tour so will be able
to get both City Walk and Studios issues. We will also be attending
Knott's Scary Farm that evening so will be able to fill any KBF holes
then as well. That Sunday we'll be apartment hunting. It's come time
for me to get outta San Jose again, so I'll be moving down to Pasadena
around November 1st. We may very well swing by DL again that day, but
I'm not sure as of right now.

Peace,

Aahz

Okay, I'm probably WAY too late with this info, but.....

For two CWF issues the $15 high end is reasonable. Without
knowing which specific coins we're discussing I can't get more specific,
but around $8 a piece is still in the right range.

I'd recommend you e-mail Corey Wylde (WSons@aol.com). He's the
TEC editor and mails out the issues. Things are somewhat in disarray
with Howard's extended illness and recent death, but Adele Vogle is the
new Secretary. Be sure to point out to Corey that you have received
previous issues so it's not just a new member thing.

If he can't help you out let me know and I'll come up with plan B.

Jeff,

I am getting some new locations on 80 (should have them from a friend
returning from vacation this Sunday)... So stay tuned...

Since some of us are Annual Passholders, another DL trip is _ALWAYS_ in
order. The Wooten's mentioned they may be in the area in early December,
and that would work for the Creightons... Soooo, the 1st Holiday EC
Collecting Trip may be born... What does everyone think? DL should have
their Holiday coins out and the park will be decorated (and much less
crowded)... sounds like a recipe for fun!

Oooh. Sounds like a good idea to me!

Hi;

Aahz just mentioned that he picked up a Bob's Big Boy -Accross from
Disneyland ec and asked about it.

I happend to roll one myself about four years ago. The Bob's was accross
Harbor Blvd. near the Disneyland employee entrace. It was located in a
converted Howard Johnson's. Had to be one of the smallest BBB's I've
visited. They were in business for a VERY short time. That ec is a real

find it! Good hunting, Chris!

I know, another one of those huge URL's from Bert! What are ya' gonna' do!

Check out the site and let me know what you think. I have not given this
URL out to anyone outside our mailing list, Corey and Willy at TEC, and
my friend Jeff (provider of Iowa sites). Oh, I did let John Wilkens know
about it, but asked him not to include it in the newspaper article, since
I didn't know how the Disneyland guests would feel about this (ie, I
didn't get any model releases signed!)... 8-)

While looking at the Trip Report, be sure to see the NEW LOCATION, a hand
crank at Disneyland Hotel (and it is NOT Eurolink)!

Enjoy...

Hi Jeanne,

Welcome to the list! It is great having you join us. You'll find great
people here and lots of good info on ECs (Elongated Coins).

You can contact Ray Dillard to purchase "2x2's" also called "two by
two's." These are 2" by 2" cardboard holders with a clear plastic window
that is elongate shaped. Ray sells these -- 300 for $12.00, 500 for
$18.00, 1000 for $32.00 and 3000 for $70.00. Once you get your coins in
the 2x2's you can get some 2x2 sheets. I got some at Fry Electronic's
here in California (in the photo section). Check your local coin stores
for 2x2 sheets (they are just like the clear plastic sheets that hold
35mm slides... Then you are off and running...

If you want to order from Ray, make your check Payable to "TEC" and send
it to:

Ray Dillard
P.O. Box 161
Fenton, MI 48430

One more thought, you may want to ask the list about polishing coins
before putting them in 2x2's... We have had some discussions about that
in the past... I now use only pre-1982 pennies and I get them
uncirculated from coin shops. I don't have to polish coins before or
after smashing them and I get GREAT results. 1982 and later coins will
smash with Zinc showing through the copper and Zinc will eventually cause
problems for your coins... We've had discussions on Zinc in the past, so
you may also want to ask about this... I believe ... has been
archiving important threads of this list on her FAQ's... You can find
Kathy's www pages and many more on my Smashed Coin Locator (URL below).

Hope all this helps.

I'm interested. I've been to WDW twice (January 96 and January 97), but it
is such a great place it's already acheived "tradition" status with me.
After Thanksgiving and before school spring breaks is the least crowded and
cheapest, hence all the "Sunshine Getaway" deals that you get from the travel
agents. I think the package was $600 last time (airfare from Boston, three
nights on site hotel, unlimited passes to the three parks, and some extras
like free breakfasts and the WDW CD-ROM). For the especially warm blooded,
though, be warned the temperature doesn't get much above 75 or below 50
around then. I think that's perfect, but some people disagree.

What's to know, Ben? It's M. Mouse's second home and the largest
known collection of elongating machines in the world! That's enough info
for me ;)

Seriously, though. The best net source for WDW info seems to be
WDWIG (Walt Disney World Information Guide) hosted by Deb Willis
(Willits?). I'm sure one of our Disney fans can provide the URL.

A WDW meet would be awesome! Make sure it's an extended thing
though as it's a MUCH larger area then DL and give yourselves PLENTY of
time for a trade session. I keep entering contests to win a trip back
there, but haven't won yet 8-( If I do, you know I'll make the trip when

Subject: (elongates) Shipping Cent Rolls
Date: 13 Sep 1997 19:45:30 -0400

Hi friends,

Paul Richards here -- one of those lurkers. I appreciate your enthusiam
about elongates. Yours is one of my favorite lists to read.

About 10 years ago I bought a mint-sewn bag (5000) of BU 1979-D Lincolns
from a dealer who sold them to me for $80 plus shipping. It occurred to
me, as I was reading some of your posts, that you folks might be interested
in a few rolls of these to SQUISH with.

Trouble is, I deal with single coins, not rolls, and I have no experience
(zero) shipping them in quantity. If you can tell me how to work out a
shipping cost schedule, I'll be happy to roll up these pennies and send
them to individuals on the list for, say, $1.10 per roll (i.e., a 30c
mark-up per roll).

How about making postage topic of discussion? What are fair postage and
handling charges in the mail-order coin business? Stat-Matics policy is a
flat $3.50 per order, but this seems unfair for small orders (e.g., one or
two coins under $50) and over-fair for large orders (e.g., four slabbed
coins insured up to $500). More specifically, what should P&H charges be
for pre-82 Lincoln rolls? For one roll? For 10? For 50?

I see in the back of Numismatic News that Arlan Kramer in Pennsylvania
charges $1.50 for a 1979-D roll, plus $4 P&H, plus 25c per roll west of the
Rockies. This is probably about right, but maybe a little creative
thinking can bring the price down.

So what do you think?

I left a credit card, he would give me an hour in the park. BANG-I'm off like
a rocket. In hind sight, it would have been easier to simply go backwards
through the gift shop into the park.
I managed to collect 5 sets of 7 coins and take in the shark encounter
(hey , I'm still honest, didn't I just dump twenty bucks in their machines?
And sharks are still among the coolest creatures in the world) before heading
for the gate. At the last machine (hopelessly jammed,) some kid showed me a
dinosaur coin. Doh! I missed a machine, so I and Achille my stroller went
chugging up dinosaur hill where we found the new Dinosphere attraction and
two brand new machines.
The machine count is 11, but two, the logo coin and the Orca were jammed. So
it goes when you collect at the end of the day.

Now the update:
Besides the previously reported coins:
MWAUSA Logo, Tiger, Orca, elephant, Koala, Shark, Walrus.
There are four new coins.
Vertical Giraffe (naturally) under a tree text MARINE WORLD above, AFRICA USA
below, no signature, dot border, SF penny co machine. Location: restrooms
next to "midway"
Vertical Flamingo on one leg, text the same as above, no signature, dot
border, SF Penny Machine Co. Location: restrooms next to main aquarium.
Horizontal Tyrannosaurus, right side, same details as above, Location:
entrance of Dino Sphere
Horizontal triceratops, left side, same details as Tyrannosaurus.

Anyone with some places of interest sets can call me for a trade. I'm looking
for amusement parks, zoos, tacky tourist places etc.

Is it just my luck, or has anyone else noticed that SF penny machine co
presses are rarely out of adjustment, while Eurolink has lots of machines
that make bad pressings?

Mickey M
Been there, done that, got the souvenier pressed penny.

Always good info!! I mean, if they're not going to kick down an
elongate, they ain't getting my cash!

When I stopped by MW this 'back door' entry was locked up 8-(
Admittedly, it WAS the middle of the afternoon on a Sunday, but hey.

As you know, Mickey, I'm interested in all of them. I've got
some KBF for ya, just give me a count.

It's not just you! I've been saying the same thing for months.
Not to mention that this is the first report I've heard of an SFPMC
machine being jammed.

Gotta love that line 8-)

Date: 14 Sep 1997 03:28:54 -0700 (PDT)

Greetings and Salutations!

Huzzah! It's finally done! I've completed the first segment of
my new catalog. This segment covers all known coins issued at or about
Disneyland, Disneyland Hotel, Disneyland Pacific Hotel, Team Disney
Administration building, and Tokyo Disneyland. Segments on WDW, the
Disneyana conventions, and non-official issues will follow at a later date.

There surely will be minor changes to the catalog, but the key
points (code numbers and titles) are set finalized. If you can fill in
any of the unknown dates please let me know.

This catalog would never exist if it weren't for the help of all
of you! Specifically I'd like to thank David Tomita for his two plus
years of tracking these coins and Nancy Wooten for her assistance both in
refining the information and proofreading.

The catalog itself will follow in a seperate message so that
anyone wishing to use it can have a 'clean copy'. I'm releasing this
catalog to the public domain and encourage everyone to use it as you
wish. Personally I'd like to see it up on someone's web site so we can
all point people to it in the future. I'd also like to see any on-line
images or discussion of these coins use these code numbers and titles.
The purpose of creating this catalog was to simplify discussion of these
coins.

Comments, questions, criticism, more information is always welcome!

Peace,

Aahz

Aahz' Catalog of Disney Elongated Coins

The following catalog has been placed in the public domain. The
cataloging system was created by Chris Aahz, who also compiled the
information into the format below. This work would not have been
possible without the assistance of The Elongated Coin Mailing List and
numerous other Disney and elongated coin enthusiasts. Special thanx go
out to David Tomita and Nancy Wooten.

Well, I'm here (the SF Bay Area) until November 3rd. Jeff should
be here in early October. And I know Nikki will be up here the weekend
before I leave town (Nov. 1st and 2nd). That's four of us!

Anyone interested in heading up to the City by the Bay the first
weekend of November for the next meet? We could either do 'A Day at
Fishermen's Wharf', which would include Pier 39 and a possible side trip
to Chinatown, or we could hit Marine World Africa USA for a day of pennies
and critters. There's also Paramount's Great America (7 machines) and the
Winchester Mystery House (3 machines) in the South Bay.

Peace,

Aahz

Well, there's a few different routes you can take here:

1) TEC sells 2x2s that can then be put into plastic binder pages
as Bert has already mentioned. This is probably the most common method.

2) Someone on the list mentioned using old type boxes (from
pre-computer print shops) to create a wall display of sorts.

3) Nikki (who's offline for the next six-weeks or so) told me
tonight that one of the three elongates displays at the LA County Fair had
the coins 'standing' in a wooden display. If you're fairly handy with
tools this shouldn't be difficult a thing to recreate.

I'm the guy sittng on the far left of the photo (brown hair and
glasses), the Lady Nikki is sitting next to me, Bert is standing roughly
between us, and E. Smith is on the far right.

I'm not sure how to take this, so I'll call it a compliment ;)

Peace,

In 1995 and 1996 DL had a machine up in November and December
with special 'holiday' themed elongated nickels. (DIS-DL-59 to 61 and
DIS-DL-86 to 88)
With the recent disappearnce of the newest quarter machine speculation
at the meet was that this may be a temporary removal to make way for the 1997
holiday issues on quarters this year. Personally, I think it's a little
early for this as the past two years they haven't pulled the machine for
prep until November.
They may, however be installing special Halloween issues as they
did last year on pennies (DIS-DL-77 to 79). I'm sure there will be
something for the Holidays and December is the perfect time to get 'em.

Peace,

Aahz

I think we should have a meet in NY somewhere on a weekend.
