It's a Disney thing. Mickey's 60th birthday celebration lasted for three
years. How long did "40 years of Adventure" last?

E-Bay is not a good place to judge the value of
elongates. I won't go into detail here as it's all been said before.
Simply put, most e-bay elongate prices are too high. Besides, you said
yourself you have 'lots' of these available.
I'm not trying to discourage people from making a trade
with you just trying to help increase everyone's knowledge.

The WDW celebration was extended because, well, because they are making
lots of money. I think the celebration is running on something like
more than two years now.
The 26th anniv. celebration was to start this month but I heard the
propertywide celebration will now be in Feb. (after the extension).
I have a feeling the machines will stay for the extension since they are
probably making lots of money on them too.

Woo Hoo!!!!
Hey all, guess what came in the mail for me this afternoon?! TEC
awarded me, yes _*ME*_ with a MERIT AWARD coin! I got a letter signed by
Ray Dillard which reads as follows:
" Sept 26, 1997
Dear TEC Member
Matt Birchard
Congradulations! The enclosed Merit Award Coin is presented to you in
recognition of your servife and/or outstanding contributions towards the
promotion of the Hobby of collecting Elongated Coins.
This annual award is made to only a very limited few after review and
approval of the TEC Board of Directors.
Please accept it with our appreciation.
Sincerely,

Ray Dillard, V.P.
<This part handwritten in red ink>
P.S. Looking forward to
meeting you at the
ANA Convention in Portland next year.
<signature> "
Impressive huh? And now for the coin description. It is a 1964 silver
quarter. Cool merely for that respect. Horizontal design with "The
Elongated Collectors" at the top. "MERIT AWARD" at the bottom. TEC owl
with TEC in the center. At left "19", at right "97". Standard dot
border with Ray's engraver mark by the start slot. Oh, did I say it is a
silver quarter? The design is only 1 1/2" long, and as such the coin
is not very flattened. Perhaps as thin as a (pre rolled) dime. The coin
is certainly not as large as the few disney quarters I have. The reverse
very clearly retains the face of the quarter, with the date and such.
The design is still slightly raised.
So, what extrodinary thing did I do to deserve this award? I'm
not sure. Truthfully. Perhaps the Board of Directors felt that I was as
good as the next guy, or they recognized my name from the several
articlaes I've authored, or because of the last article I wrote
concerning a membership roster that included such wonderful <g>
recommendations and comments on our club as a whole. Or maybe someone
thought they'd award this coin to me because I _think_ (and I stress
think) that the club may have stiffed me for a few Newsletter Award
coins, or maybe it was just the luck of the draw. At any rate, I feel
deserving and I'm happy to except the award. What a surprise to find in
the mail. Now to write a nice note to Ray.

Knott's is looking for 'major investors' with plans for a major
improvement/enlargement of the park, according to the news last week. I
don't think we have to worry about them closing the park. (If you have

This is what i have heard about Knott's...
Knotts is one of the largest amusement parks in the world...and hovers
around 3rd or 4th in the U.S., after the two Disney parks, and depending
on how much of Universal Studios you count, I think. And Knott's is
entirely family owned.
Family owned enterprises have gone away like many of KNott's former
attractions in Ghost Town...even the Dodgers, the last family owned
major league baseball team will eventually be sold to Rupert
Murdoch...but according to local Southern California news reports, the
Knott families are looking for investors and are seeking to raise
capital to build additions to the park.
I would not be surprised if some old-time Orange County cowboy lend a
hand or that Snoopy and the gang might help out.
I was there at KNott's on a Monday a week after labor day taking
out-of-state guests there and it was great because it was so empty,
there was no wait. ONly a collected a few elongates, though...

But has anyone gone to the original Calico Ghost Town out in the Mojave
lately? Are there elongates there?
aside: Calico Ghost Town in San Bernardino County was where the father
of Walter Knott (the patriarch of KNott's) first mined for silver...and
the structures of Calico were copied in Buena Park, except for the Hotel
- that was moved from Prescott, AZ. Knott's must have had a hand in
developing Calico Ghost Town (they donated it to the county) because I
remember many attractions are similar - mine train ride, the house where
everything is slanted, bottle house, etc.

Yes, my e-mail is all set up. The account defaulted to no-external
e-mail.
I did make it to Niagara Falls on the trip out. The states I have
pennies
from:
Massachusetts,
New York,
Illinois,
Missouri,
Colorado,
Kansas,
Utah
I pressed between 4-10 per penny. On the Niagara Fall dimes - yes I
pressed
7 dupes. I went through rolls of quarters like they were water. In the
end,
there is lots of new information for the list.
I pressed 1 of each for Janelle and Chris. However, I found out later
that
an I LOVE YOU penny in New York was unique. It had hearts around it.
Also, the pennies near Lincoln's tomb and the log cabins I only got a
couple
of. I didn't think there would be pennies and didn't bring any. So, I
had to
scrounge as much as I could from the people there.
Coolest penny experience: St. Louis Science Center.
We showed up to the entrance a half hour after it closed. I have my
face
pressed up against the glass and make sounds. One of the cleaning
people
comes over. I yell through the glass, "do you have any penny machines?"
I hold up a penny to the glass. The woman nods. She yells back "two
dollars." I nod and run back to the car and get my stuff. She won't
let me in
so I give her a roll of quarters and pennies. She presses one of each
and then
skims two dollars off the top for "risking her job." Hey! It's all in
the name of
pennies!
I'll have the trading list together tomorrow. It's been really crazy
here!

Well, Nikki and I were at Knott's Scary Farm this past Saturday
for the 25th Annual Halloween Haunt and it was PACKED! In fact, it was
almost impossible to get amotel room within a few blocks around KBF which
is saying something in October.
From what I've heardKBF is just looking to expand (like every
other amusement park in California). The Friday night Halloween Haunt was
sold out and the Saturday was nearly so. When we were at the park in
September I'd say it was about equally as crowded as Disneyland was the
next day. I don't think they're going anywhere.
Thanks for keeping us informed, though!

Greetings & Salutations!
I am sending this message because at one time you either were a
s*bscriber to The Elongated Coin Mailing List or expressed an interest in
it. Many people uns*bscribed due to high volume of messages and asked to
be placed on a Digested version when it became available.
The list's ISP has been VERY unhelpful in setting up a digested
version of the list, so I have finally given up on them and decided to do
things the hard way. Beginning this weekend I will be sending out weekly
Digests of The Elongated Coin Mailing List.
If you would like to be placed on the list for the Digested
version then simply send a message to me <aahz@svpal.org> letting me know
and I will add your name to the list.
Thank you for your patience in this matter and I look forward to

Subject: (elongates) Auction donations sought
Date: 07 Oct 1997 17:45:36 -0700 (PDT)
Greetings & Salutations!
The bill for the mailing lists ISP is going to come due the
second week of December, and is going to be quite a burden. However,
there is no way I'm going to let this list die after it has grown so much
and helped so many. So.....
Announcing the first ever Elongated Coin Mialing List Auction!
The auction will be held during the month of November and all proceeds
will be used to support the Mailing List. I pay more for the list's ISP
then I do for my primary ISP cause my primary ISP won't host the list.
Any funds above and beyond the ISP bill (just over $100) will be put
towards creating a new domain that will be home to the list itself and
will host elongates-related web sites, ftp sites, etc. The domain is
going to cost roughly $400 to set up and maintain for the first year or so.
What will be auctioned? Anything and everything I can get my
hands on that may possibly be of interest to the members of the list.
I'm putting up several oldies (including two Columbian Expo coins),
various modern issues, some painted elongates, elongated 2x2s, an EC
pamphlet, and a few rolls of copper and/or steel coins.
Do you have anything you can donate to the list? Obviously any
of the items above are of interest to all here, but anything else the
list MAY be interested in would be great: non-elongated coins, tokens or
medals; EC books/magazines, etc; services you can provide; random items
you have lying around the house; just about anything.
Any donations that are not sold will be returned to the donator.
Thanx in advance for your help!
Peace,
Aahz

Ack! Forgot one small piece of information:
Donations can be sent to:
Chris Aahz
925 Ravenscourt Ave #2
San Jose, CA 95128
Just make sure they'll arrive before October 31st, 'cause I'll be
moving to Pasadena then. The auction will begin as soon as I get moved in
down there.
Peace,
Aahz

I'm in. We could meet somewhere midway. I'm in Newark, Chris in SJ and Jeff
in San Mateo. That would put us...uh oh, in the middle of the bay. We'll
figure something out.
Anyone else going to be in the area? I'm dying to do some more trading. I
just found out that I have a complete Marine World 11 coin set! Will trade
for a cool set like...San Diego Zoo or Knotts!

Well, we could all just happen to break down on the San Mateo
Bridge at a pre-specified time and enjoy the sun and surf from the small
emergency parking area ;)
Seriously, though. I'm not very concerned with where (as long as
there's no admission or parking fee). Either SM or Newark are fine with
me. How about either Saturday the 18th or Sunday the 19th?

Your Knott's coins went out today, Mickey. Sorry I lagged,
but.... well, I'm a flake, there is no excuse.

Although I enjoy reading and following the E-mail...I find it is owerwhelming
. I would like to be placed on the digested version when it becomes
available.
Kind of new to this whole thing. But have been "watching" all your
messages for the last week. My son collects elongates quite by accident.
Didn't know this was such a phenomenon! What I would like to know if there
are any Wisconsin Dells. We are going there for the first time at the end
of the month. I'm interested in ones in Indiana also. Seems like most of
your messages deal with WDW and California. Can anyone help us in the
midwest?

I live in Minnesota and there are some here. If interested, let me
know. I have heard of some in the Dells but not of exact locations.

Doug,
I was there last Wednesday, and have a complete set. Let me check
them out and make a listing and I'll post it tomorrow. Off the top
of my head, there are four machines, which press four coins each.
Two are located near the entrance, outside the gift shops, and the

There are machines along the main road where all the shops are located. I
know that there is one ( it has four designs in it) by the last group of

Boston Museum of Science
There were three different T-Rex designs.
1. Horizontal. Picture of T-Rex with dots on the bottom
"Museum of Science, Boston"
Removed ???
2. Horizontal. Picture of T-Rex with no dots and great teeth
"Museum of Science, Boston"
3. ?
There were two different lion designs
1. Vertical picture of lion. No additional information known.
REMOVED AFTER 1 DAY. Supposed to look more like a monkey.
2. Horizontal picture of a lion. "Museum of Science, Boston"
Penny Works told me that they *might* bring back the extremely
cool shark penny this fall. I guess it's to be in line with the current
OMNI
theatre exhibit. It's a must get!
The Penny Works representative was extremely cool to speak with. I told
him lots of information about the mailing list. Plus, I told him about
the
penny scans and the location-keepers. I told him he should "lurk" on
the
list - and see what kind of information presents itself.
Sorry for the delay in sending this information out - I've been quite
busy.

The same can be said for 90% of the list members and probably of
all the collectors who started in the the last 10-15 years.
> What I would like to know if there are any Wisconsin Dells.
Hmmm...let's see what I've got...
v. Stand Rock, "Wisconsin Dells" across top and "Stand/Rock" at bottom
Also have three from The House on The Rock in Spring Green (Is this
near Wisconsin Dells?):
"World's Largest Carousel" w/ Carousel horse
"World's Largest Sea Crature" w/ whale
"The Infinity Room" w/ loooong building
Also in Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Zoo reportedly has seven and the
Milwaukee library has a dinosaur coin.
> I'm interested in ones in Indiana also.
None of the Location Keepers have any listed for Indiana, but I
have a few from ParkeCounty (the courthouse and some covered bridges).
These were rolled by Frank Brazzell so may or may not have been issued at
machines.
> Seems like most of your messages deal with WDW and California.
Well, the majority of the active list members live in California
and CA is also the home of Eurolink (the largest cooin-op machine
manufacturer). Disney is just a hot theme in any souvenir/tourist circle.

That may be true, but I have one from the National Tower in
Gettysburg that has the Bust of Abraham Lincoln on it, so there is a
penny machine that will press the image of Abe onto a penny.

I'd considered asking for straight donations, but decided against
it for several reasons:
1) It's not really about the money. I do this 'cause I love it.
2) Once people start paying for something they begin to feel a
sense of ownership. While often a good thing, it can also be bad. People
are much more willing to accept 'flaws' in something they have not paid
for, be it mail bombs inadvertently created by the list-owner, spam, or
snesnless ramblings.
3) Bookkeeping. I hate it and certainly don't want to have to do
it if I can avoid it.
4) I, personally, find requests for donations irritating. Those
who can't (or don't want to) donate often feel guilty for not doing so. I
don't want to risk closing anyone out.
Essentially, that's why I came up with the idea of doing an
auction to help support the list. This way people get something they want
and still manage to support the list. If people can't spend money, they
still get the list guilt-free and just miss out on some 'goodies'. Of
course, once I looked thru what I had to auction I realized that I'd need
more stuff if I was going to have any real success, so I was 'forced' to
make a request for donations. I don't intend to repeat that plea as I
feel bad enough doing it once.
Of course, none of this is meant to imply that people shouldn't
feel free to bid extraordinary amounts of money on the auction lots just
to help support the list or send large sums of cash to me without ulterior
motive :)

Aahz

Chris,
Here are a couple ones that you don't have included in your
catalog yet. I'm not totally up on the proper catalogging protocal, so
here is a bunch of detail and I'll let you do the rest. :-) BTW, these
two coins were the basis of my collection back when I had under 30
coins.
Circa 1983, latter part of the summer. Vertical design. Dot border,
dots are somewhat larger than dots on many other coins. Top: "(c)
UNIVERSAL CITY STUDIOS INC." Below: "FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER" Picture
of Frankenstein's Monster, nice raised image. Head is large with a big
forehead, the bolts in the neck, and the Monster is wearing a turtle
neck. Reverse of my specimen is heavily pitted, actually it is a mess of
raised bumps. The reverse roller must have been pretty screwed up. The
date is when my dad and I rolled the coin, late summer, 1983. Oh, there
is no start slot.
Horizontal Design. Dot border, except copyright info replaces dots at
top. Start slot on left. Copyright info which replaces dots at top
reads: "(c) 1986 UNIVERSAL CITY STUDIOS INC" Top: "KONGFRONTATION (TM)"
Below: "UNIVERSAL STUDIOS (R)" Picture is of Kong's two hands holding a
tour bus (Universal tour type bus) and Kong's head behind the bus with
his eyes looking through the bus. Mouth is open, nice detail on the
engraving.
So, there ya go. Sorry folks, I have no spares to trade. :-(
And hey Chris, you need to publish a hardcopy version of the catalog once
you've gotten more stuff listed. ANd the proper protocal for catalogging
all issues so that this method can be spread throughout the hobby. Have
you written an article for TEC News about it yet?
Sorry about not keeping in the discussion as much as I'd like,
but I'm on 4 active (including this one) mailing lists, and welp, just
two days ago the tech folks at my school (that provide me with free
e-mail) moved my INBOX because it was bursting with over 250 messages.
No they weren't all new, just stuff that was still "on the table".
Anyway, I do read a good number of the messages off this list, so keep
'em coming. :-)

I have already traded my complete set, but I will be going back to

patient, I would be happy to get you a set and trade for the MN

Hi, Chris,
Here I go again, messing up your catalog!!!!!
I have three coins you don't list. They were from the "Star Trek
Adventure" which was there from about 1989 until they closed it to
put the Flintstones in. The coins are as follows:
h - Star Trek Logo "Star Trek" (This coin also has the names of
cast members as follows: Captain/Kirk, Mr./Spock, Dr./McCoy,
Scotty, Chekov, Uhura, Sulu. The "Star Trek" is in the middle of
the coin, surrounded by the cast names - pretty hard to describe)
Has Dot Border.
h - Star Trek Adventure Logo "Paramount Pictures/Star
Trek/Adventure/Universal Studios" Has Dot Border
h - Picture of U.S.S. Enterprise with starry background
"U.S.S./Enterprise" Has Dot Border
Also, on your location list, you have a typo, showing a coin in ET's
Toy Closet as number 49, instead of number 40.
When you get down here, you can meet the trouble maker that is
responsible for this (my daughter, Wendy).

Disneyland Hotel Monorail penny (DIS-DLH-1) is now for the first time
located at the Disneyland Hotel area (it use to be in Disneyland). It
can be found in the Neon Cactus Sports Bar and Grill. I wonder how long
it had been hiding in there?

For the moment, I prefer creating the numbers myself. I've just
finished converting "Yesterday's Elongateds" into the new system and will
start work on Rosato's Encyclopedia when I finally get my paws on one.
The work with Yesterday's has caused several catalogging revisions and I
expect the Encyclopedia to cause more. Until I get that work done, I'd
prefer to do the catalogging myself in order to keep things internally
consistent.
> And hey Chris, you need to publish a hardcopy version of the catalog once

That's the plan! Right now I've got a few hundred coins
catalogged and several thousand with tentative numbers. After I get and
convert Rosato's Encyclopedia the first hardcopy editions should be
coming out. Until then, the catalog only exists in my mind and on the net.
> ANd the proper protocal for catalogging all issues so that this method can

See my comments above regarding publishing the protocol.
Essentially I don't want to end up with conflicting code numbers and the
only way I see to avoid those is to have a large number of coins
pre-catalogged and then assign new numbers thru one person/body of
persons. These things are in progress.
As for publishing in TEC News...I have been told by numerous
people that creating a new catalogging system will only aggravate those
who are used to the old system. I understand this to a degree, but it
has been impressed upon me that simply creating and encouraging the use
of this system is going to cause some MAJOR problems with me and TEC.
Considering the fact that a fair number of TEC insiders have already
decided I'm a trouble maker I think it's best if I hold off on sharing
this with them for the moment. A shame, really, because it will just be
that much harder to do without their help.

Sounds good. The one flaw of the Chris Catalog (I just named it, sounds
good) is the sequential numbering. When new issues are discovered which
predate previous entries, the nice neat format may become a bit ragged,
but I don't really see a better way, so I think it is fine. Also, just
curious, what are you doing about coins which are location specific, like
Lord's Prayer issues and store cards? You may have addressed this
already and I just missed it (I mentioned that I don't read everything
from this list), but I'm curious. So the Chris Catalog is in the beta
testing stage now with us 'net folks. :-)

Do you have a line on the Rosato Encyclopedia yet? They are spendy, but
worth the $. I suppose I could lend you mine if you wanted. I've got
two of the Encyclopedia's, one unopened. It would cost about $9.00 to
ship to you, but it is a thought. I rarely use my open copy now. You
could keep it until you'd done the conversion. LMK.

Yep, I'd have to tend to agree with the aggravation comments. You
represent change and established organizations are resistant to change.
I just formally learned that in my Organizational Behavior class at
University. Puttin' that ed-ju-macation to work right away. :-) Yeah,
I guess there could be some problems, but what could be too MAJOR? TEC
is just a bunch of folks that have an interest in these coins. However,
you're membership # lets everyone know about when you joined, and anyone
over 2000 is considered "new" in my book, and I'd suspect many other
longtime members' perceptions. But seriously, what could the club do?
Kick you out? I don't think so.

The biggest point of aggravation that I can foresee with the Chris
Catalog is the conversion of the previously exsisting listings in
"Yesterday's" and Rosato's "Encyclopedia". Those guys that invented
those catalogging methods are still around and a conversion has never
been done to my knowledge. Meaning Rosato didn't re-number all of the
Martin-Dow numbers. Whether you mean to or not, I'm sure you'll make
them feel like you're "invading" or "altering" their work by re-numbering
them. In those guys' minds, their catalogging systems are the end all,
be all. Just be aware that relisting a perviously listed coin may ruffle
a few more feathers than listing an unlisted modern. Personally I
approve of it, because I see the Chris Catalog as being much more
complete and easier to use. You've got my support and I assume everyone
on this list supporting you too, so more power to you. I'll help where I
can.

Greetings All!
Just back from Disneyland. Hi Martin from San Diego! (Met him at the Neon
Cactus.
Of course, the restaurant was closed and mostly locked up, but, Martin, his
lady companion, my wife, daughter and I formed a line at the newly
re-discovered DIS-DLH-1 machine! :-). What a great location for a
restaurant, built around a penny press!
Thanks to the poster of that location!
Back to business.....
Checked out the Park, looking for the illusive seasonal sets. Made it to
Teddy Bearra's Arcade. Whooooaaa machine number 624, Ursula (v) HS,
Maleficent (v) HS, and the Wicked Witch (v) 3/4 picture, are now on stage.
Much like last year, but, NO DATE's or "dripping blood" on the ec's. The
machine has been down more than up and wasn't there on the 3rd of the month,
so guess it's really fresh. I rolled a *few* coins before it failed again!
All of you that have posted an interest in these sets before, I'm still
short. However, I'll try to roll more when the machine is up and be as fair
as I can when trading them out. (I have a list of interested parties, but, it
wouldn't hurt to reaffirm your interest by e-mailing to me at
roberthoff@aol.com.) If I can roll an extra set, I will donate it to the
auction.
Back on stage at Teddy Bearra's, is the DIS-DLH-8, Disneyland Hotel Quarter,
DIS-DL-69, Mickey Quarter and DIS-DL-70, Castle Quarter.
Moved from Teddy Bearra's is machine number 534, Thumper, Bambi, and Flower,
now located at the Country Bear Playhouse with the CBP set.

lettering and numbers. I know they are Eurolink from the little e and

In going thru Chris's catalog I found the following ones needed (I
question which ones we NEED) but here goes:
Winchester Mystery House WMH-2 Firearms Museum (working yet ?)
Universal Studios Hollywood-ALL
Now the question is-who of you lucky people who live out in sunny
California would like to make a set for us poor, cold people in
Minnesota? Can offer MN Zoo pennies, MN Science Museum, Knott's Camp
Snoopy Mall of America, Underwater World, and if you want to wait until
Valley Fair opens again in the spring of 98 those pennies as well.
I also noticed I do have a King Kong from Universal Studios which is as
follows:
v. King Kong with arms in front of head, King Kong/Universal City
Studio Inc.
Border: Dotted
Installed: ??/?? Removed: ??/??
Roller: ??? Engraver: ???
Looks very similar to the JA/WS one I have right next to it which I
think is USH-7 so is this also perhaps a Willy Massey one and not a park
one?

Hi, again,
My daughter was at Universal Studios a couple of weeks ago, and got
extras when she got some for me. She missed a few machines, and
some were out of order, but I have quite a few of them. When I get
them organized, I'll send you a list of what I have, and you can let
me know if you are interested. Shouldn't be more than a couple of
days. Sounds like you might have more I would like. I'm especially
interested in the Camp Snoopy ECs. I think they would compliment my
Knott's Berry Farm set nicely.

Hi Nancy;
Me too! The girl at the counter in the gift shop told me the "Witches"
penney press has been down a lot in the few days it's been on stage. :-(
Maybe if we push, they'll get it to work before it's gone for the

Actually, Don Adams did a complete numismatic type series back in
the '70s. He made beautiful reproductions of the obverse and reverse of
each type coin issued n the US and rolled them on pennies, nickels and dimes.
So, you can actually get a penny rolled on a penny :)

Well, after much thought I simply decided to number new finds of
older issues in a category as the next higher number. There really isn't
a better way to do it that I can think of and precedent has already ben
set in by Martin-Dow in YE. A few of their listings have issues dated an
earlier year given a higher number then issues dated later. (I hope that

Well, I've come up with a new (and I think improved) method of
catalogging Lord's Prayer coins. I'll post that info soon. It's based
on the Martin-Dow system, only slightly more refined and consistent. I'm
considering doing a similar system for Lucky Coins, but haven't worked
out the details yet.
Store cards will be addressed in another post later today as I
have some questions for the group regarding them.

In order for any project of this scope to be successful it really
needs the assistance of the long-term TEC members. They've got the coins
and the knowledge. My questioning of the election process this year has
already got one Board member refusing to correspond with me, and a few
others VERY leery of anything I have to say.

Although I get the impression he did renumber quite a few.
One of Angelo's recent articles mentions several cross-listings. I am
assuming that he still listed them under his system in his book.

I understand what I'm getting in to, that's why I'm kinda 'lying
low' with it for now. Essentially it's really just a modified Martin-Dow
system. From what I've seen Martin-Dow is location based and Rosato is
Roller based. I don't like the idea of a roller based system for a lot
of reasons, but I also see where it can be useful for SERIOUS long-term
collectors and definetly for researchers. The MArtin-Dow system kind of
fell apart even within YE. With so many modern coins being issued it
falls apart even more. Everything needs to change with time, and I think
it's time for this new system.
The reason I'm converting the old systems is to make the new
system internally consistent. It wouldn't do a lot of good for me to
list the current San Francsico Cliff House issue as CA-SFCH-1 when there
were several Cliff House coins issued prior to 1965 and likely several
more between then and now. The current issue os at least the 12th or so,
and the only way to find that number is to convert the old systems.

Hmmm....my money says this is going to stay after halloween since
the date's been removed. Did they redo the characters names in a
'normal' type-face or did they just remove it entirely? Essentially I'm
trying to figure out if they modified the die or re-did it with the same

Hip, hip, hooray! Maybe their machine tech was on vacation or
something. I'm glad this one's back for two reasons: 1) I didn't get 'em
yet and there was no apparent reason for removal, and 2) This makes it
less likely for the holiday coins to be put on quarters.

I have a feeling it'll hang around since it's not dated, but I
still recommend 'Getting while the getting's good". If it's having this
many problems it's first few days on stage the machine itself may need to
be replaced. Most likely in that case they'd still put the die in
another machine, but ya never know.

Listing the coins like this, sans numbers, makes things a LOT

Well, the roller, is who made/placed the machine. If you can't
find a name/card on the machine you can sometimes find out from a nearby
clerk or supervisor. The engraver is discovered via initials on the
coin, usually in the border. The second logo coin is probably a Jim
Dundon issue and if so, will have the inital 'J' replacing the center dot
on the bottom and the initial 'D' replacing the the center dot on the top.

It's pretty easy to tell what Willy has rolled once you know what
you're looking for. The back of Willy's coins have the image of the coin
in a type of relief. I don't really know how to explain this, but if you
have any coins you KNOW Willy rolled, look at the reverse. Normally, if
you can see the image at all it is merely a flat image, whereas Willy has
a special process that creates a three dimensional image of the reverse
of the coin.

No, they are two different coins. The one without the mini info takes
up more of the coin-Knott's is larger and Camp Snoopy is more spread out
over the coin. Also a dotted border v. chain. Info on the machines is

Hi;
First, thank you to Chris Aahz for poviding this great medium of
communication and to Jim for the heads up about the Disneyana Show. It was
great and I surely would have missed it if it weren't for their help.
I arrived at 10:45 AM for the freebie admission at 11:00 AM. $10.00 would
get you in at 8:30. I found two maybe three people with ec's for sale. Most
of them were current issues at Disneyland or at WDW. Many had Disneyana
cents and quarters for sale. I was surprised to find a only a few "retired"
coins, no CM issues and no sign of anything like a DIS-DL-1, 10, or 11. One
seller, a nice guy, mentioned he had sold a dated seasonal set this AM, his
last one! (OK, if you bought this, you know who you are!! :-) Another seller
had the same but smaller selection. Prices ranged around $1.00 for cents and
$3.00 quarters that are currently available at Disneyland or WDW. Retired
nickels (*IF* you got there before they were sold) $5.00 up to maybe $10.00
with the "seasonals" on the lower side and 40th Ann. etc. on the higher side.
No CM issues found. Most did not even know what they are. Of course, I
checked for "Dalmations", none to be found. My "big" purchase was a set of
1996 Villains at $9.00. My daughter, Stasi, bought a set of 1995 seasonals
for her set at $12.00 and my wife purchased some Disneyana coins for her,
new, just started it today, set of Disneyana ec's. Had hoped to find trading
stock and make a purchase or two for friends, but, selection and price were
not right. I do think that inventories come and go so the next show may
offer more hard to get issues.

After the Disneyana show, of course, we stopped by the park and checked the
New Villains machine out (Need a number for this one, Aahz! :-). Although
not perfectly, it was working, even after we left :-)! Rolled some cents for

While at the Penny Arcade, I noticed the Hercules quarter machine
(DIS-DL-89-90-91) was gone. Also the Mickey, Mickey, and Goofy, sports
(DIS-DL- 65,66,67) ec machine was gone. No new machines found. I would
suspect that the machines were moved. A limited search did not find them
however.

Actually, the machine is off to the side in a room with game
machines and air hockey, but you do get to wander around the whole
bar before you find it if you come in the right door. It's a great
machine! It has the instructions carved into the wooden case.

Actually, if you look carefully, there appears to be something
running from the bottom of each letter in the name. It's so small,
it's easy to miss, but I think we have our "dripping blood".

After comparing them with last years, the look to me like they
re-did the die with the same (or very close) images. My first
thought was that they had just removed the date from the die, but
the figures have been repositioned so they are closer to the top,
leaving no room for a date.

Okay, then. Two people say new die, it must be a new die. So,
the following can be added to your DIS-DL catalogs:
DIS-DL-98 Ursula w/ blood
v. HS of Ursula, "Ursula/Disneyland"
Installed: 10/97 Removed: CA
DIS-DL-99 Maleficent w/ blood
v. HS of Maleficent, "Maleficent/Disneyland"

DIS-DL-100 Wicked Witch w/ blood
v. Waist up of Wicked Witch, "Wicked Witch/Disneyland"

I'm pretty much assuming the descriptions from what you guys have

Prices seem fairly reasonable given the setting. Typically
you're going to find modern/current elongates from coin dealers for
around a buck. I could see $5 for the retired coins, though I'd rather
pay less, these aren't going to be as common as long term machines that
are now retired. $10 seems a bit high, but I might pay it for the 1995
issues. Of course, at the moment my budget is $0, but these comments are
'in general'.

I should of thought of this before you went, but....
You didn't happen to take a couple print outs of my DIsney
catalog to provide the dealers did you? If you got any contact info from
them we could forward 'em copies.

A red aprox. 20 inch square bandana with a border around it-- --
(these words are written on the bandana)
Happy Trails
Ron Dominguez
August 31,1994
It is my understanding that this bandana was an item that guests recieved at
Mr.
Dominguez's retirement party-- -Mr. Dominguez was a top execuative at
Disneyland
for many years. I think the guests also recieved a Ron Dominguez elongated
penny-- -
-- --I obtained the bandana when I obtained the elongated penny.
Is anyone interested in trading some pennies for this bandana?

Oopps. No. %-( I could give copies next time out.
I did get contacts for the two dealers that had a selection of DL / WDW
coins.
I have e-mailed them today asking their ok to forward their addresses to
the list members. If not, I'm sure I can post the info from their business
cards.

Ron Dominguez was the last member of "Club 55", the original CMs in the park
when it opened on July 17, 1955. He worked his way up to an executive
position from a ride operator.
They had a huge turn-out for his last day. He sailed a keelboat full of
family and friends around the Rivers of America and was surprised when
hundreds of CMs lined the banks waving red bandanas. His "trademark" was the
red bandana. They retired to the Golden Horseshoe for a retirement party.

It turns out the Canery Row Wax Museum had a penny machine two years
ago.
I don't have any details on what the design was.
Also, I have 99% certain that the otter penny machine and the sailor
machine are from the San Francisco Penny company.
Perhaps they could confirm the Wax Museum penny machine?
On the Leblanc Gallery, where the third penny exists, that's a really
neat store! Besides visiting the Eurolink machine, I highly
recommend people in the area to check it out.
I pressed extras of all three machines in the area on Saturday (just one
day before John Denver crashed into the same bay).
For the token lovers out there, in the overpass above the wax museum
building is a token machine. I tried to get one but the machine
was out of order. If people want more specific information, let me
know. I'm not a big token person - but I collect some from time to
time.

Hmmm....Does anyone know if this Wax Museum is owned by the same
company that owns the Hollywood and San Francisco Wax Museums? Perhaps a
letter to this company is in order.

I'm 100% certain on this. SFPMC even sent me a freebie of one of
these.

Okay, I'm confused again. Hopefuly one of our Disneyphiles can
help me out. I had been given the impression that the Ron Dominguez coin
was issued at Team Disney Administration during the 1995 Open House. If
it was issued along with the bandana at his "farewell pary" then it would
seem that it was actually handed outat the park itself in August of 1995
(that's the date on the bandana).

know what he means by this?

Okay, I need a little help with these. First, I need names for
the borders on the following coins:
> DIS-WDW25-5 Sorcerer Mickey Quarter
> v. Sorcerer Mickey below logo, "1996/2/5"
> Border: Custom

Also, does anyone have examples of DIS-WDW25-13 that they KNOW
which machine they came from? I'd like to compare some of these to
discover if there are any differences.
Howard explained that it is a coin with a pressing on the reverse side. The
Santa Cruz Beach and Boardwalk is an example.
BTW, I just happen to have three available for three people who would like to
see it for themselves.
Mickey.

They all have the same general design, but it is VERY rare for
two seperate dies to be absolutely identical. That's why I need to know
if anyone knows what machine their coin came from. So I can compare 'em
and find out what, if any, variations exist amongst them.

Aloha,
The statue coin is not a current coin. The dealer (in Hawaii) I got mine
from said they were very limited edition, but he didn't remember
where/when they were produced.
Eurolink did send a machine to Hawaii some years back for a promotion. I
wonder if this machine was the one that produced the statue coin? None of
the current machines I have used in Hawaii are Eurolink...

On a road trip between Salt Lake City and San Francisco, we stopped in
Winnemucca Nevada the Spud Capital of the World - presumably one of the
farms grows thousands and thousands of acres of potatoes.
Anyways the best place to eat in town it the Flying Pig BBQ and their
logo had a pig with wings like Pegasus. I don't remember seeing a penny
machine then but the logo was very cute.

The Flying Pig ec is one from an ANA convention, held at Porkopolis, Ohio

Chris,
I know this is a few days late, but most browsers will allow a download
of a graphical file to your hard drive. Try placing your cursor over
the icon for the file, then clicking the RIGHT mouse button. Often a
mini-menu appears where a download option is available. Also try your
menu bar, usually FILE, look for download options.
Then all you have to do is view the image on your own viewer.

Bob,
Thanx, but I'm dealing with a MUCH older system here. I don't
even have a mouse :) Anywayz, I use the Lynx browser and can download
some images (ie. the images on David's Disneyland page). However, Kathy
has her images placed 'Inline'. I'm not really sure what that means other
then instead of seeing the image I just see [INLINE]. There is no way for
me to download these images.
The plus side of using Lynx is that pages load REALLY fast, and I
still get the text which is (to moe) the most important part of 99% of the
pages I visit.

Numismatically, a mule is a coin with a mismatched obverse and reverse.
Sorta like a Jefferson nickel with a Buffalo reverse. Mules were once
fairly common in the early days of the Republic, but with modern minting
technology they are hardly never seen.
In elongates, I would imagine a mule is one which is double sided but
with mismatched sides.

One suggestion on your endeavor....
Why don't you write to Lee Martin and Angelo Rosato and Dottie Dow too
and explain what you are going to do? Ask them for any insights they
could give you and what traps to avoid. DON'T give the impression that
you are going to throw out their work and put your own in (I know you're
not, but make sure they know it too). In other words, get their
blessing for your catalog and then you won't have nearly the resistance
from the TEC old liners you could have.
Keep up the good work. It will be far harder than you can conceivably
imagine right now. My own New Hampshire woods catalog is proof of
that. I'll be glad to help however I can.

Actually, it makes a lot more sense to me, Bob. Thanx! The
general consensus (and likely how the term is NOW generally understood)
was that a double-sided elongate is a mule. I didn't see any reason to
call it anything other then 'double-sided' in that case. The mismatched
sides not only fits the term 'mule' better, but also seems to fit within
the usage in the listings I was looking at.

When I first came up with this whole catalogging idea (over two
years ago, now), step one on my list was to contact those who have done
the work before. When I started getting serious about doing it (about
six months ago) I still had this one my 'to do' list, but I'm notorious
lazy when it comes to letter writing. Then, in July I started toying
around with the new system and mentioned it to Bert, who started
pestering me about it until I got details worked out. ;)
So after a slow start things have accelerated VERY quickly and
I've kinda been caught up in the whirlwind. In that same time period I
managed to make a few enemies in TEC so am still wary of proposing
anything on paper. The catalog certainly isn't going to appear
overnight, so I plan on discussing it with the ol' pros at the ANA
convention in Portland next year. That gives more time for the waves I
created over the election to die down and for me to work out any serious
defects in the system. Since I'm still dealing primarily with 'machine
rolled' issues (as opposed to roller issues) it's pretty much stuff that
is currently completely uncatalogged anyway from what I understand.
