Frontierland Wooden Nickel from Disneyland Park features a " ©Walt Disney Productions" mark. The earliest mention we've found was a rumor that examples were offered at the Frontierland Indian Village circa 1955-1971. Often offered for sale or trade by collectors today. Your additions / correction are most welcome.

The history of Disneyland Wooden nickels has long been overlooked. The treasured wooden nickel souvenirs, especially Disneyland wooden nickels, often bring a smile. They may even win a place of honor in scrapbooks. Yet, fellow collectors could not find a comprehensive listing or guide to the collection of Disneyland wooden nickels anywhere! So, a good friend and advanced Disneyana collector, C. Neal, encouraged ParkPennies to embark on this project as a fun addition to our other collector guides...

ParkPennies will be searching for additional wooden tokens and Mardi Gras Wooden Throws to add to this guide. The difficult part is done. We've started the guide! :-) But, we'd welcome your help to complete it. Although, like most ParkPennies readers, I remember many of my first visits to Disneyland, yet I can't remember seeing wooden nickels at the park. One of my early visits was with my parents in February of 1956. (Yes, I'm younger than you thought. :-) It's a very fond memory of mine, I remember the Rocket Ship to the Moon and the Indian Village where wooden nickels are said to have been available... But, I do not remember seeing one of the illusive wooden disks at the time. Now, after hundreds of visits over the following half century... I still have no recollection of ever seeing a Disneyland wooden nickel at the park other than the ~2014 Frontierland "Bits"! :-( But, I do have the Frontierland version of the souvenir, that is pictured in the guide, here on my desk. I've already started a collection! :-)

I hear that wooden nickels were offered in the early years of Disneyland. I've also read that in 2013 The Golden Horseshoe Saloon had been testing an interactive play that offered guests a chance to earn (drum roll) wooden nickels! That test lead to the Legends of Frontierland in 2014. So, there is some history to be acknowledged and some wooden nickels to be found. We just need to fill in all the years between 1955 and 2013 to know which pieces were offered onstage and which are fantasy pieces. Sigh. With your help, we hope to complete the missing years of Disneyland wooden nickel history from the opening days of Disneyland to the present.
