Carl Barks Pressed Coins
Staring Scrooge McDuck
The World Famous Penny Pincher!

Donald DAck pressed coin. At last a spelling error Boomer didn't make himself :-).Pinched pennies can make for a fun collection. True, the proper term for these fun keepsakes is "Elongated Coins" and many people do call them "pressed pennies". But, given Scrooge McDuck is the star here... elongated coins? It just seems right to call them pinched pennies. :-) As you may know, and according to Wikipedia, Mr. Carl Barks worked for the Disney Studio and Western Publishing where he created Duckburg and many of its inhabitants. Of course, Donald Dack, er ah Donald Duck has fans around the world*. But once Scrooge McDuck became a resident of Duckburg back in 1947. Well, some of us, like Financial Planners and all really took a liking to Scrooge. ;-)

Of interest, cartoonist Will Eisner once called Mr. Barks "the Hans Christian Andersen of comic books". Needless to say, Mr. Barks was very accomplished, has given us many Disney characters, and has many fans of his work around the world. Yours truly included. After all, without his imagination, Donald Duck would not exist and surely not this Scrooge "pinch penny" collection.

Of the many remarkable members of the Duckburg family, Mr. Bark's lovable Pinch Penny Scrooge character to many of us, has earned the title of Disney's King of Pinching Pennies. Scrooge's reputation and popularity has inspired many pinched pennies, pinched nickels, pinched dimes and pinched quarters at the Disneyland Resort USA, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland DisneySea, and Comic-Con International to name a few locations. We've gathered a sample of some of these fun "Pinched Pennies" for you here. However, there are many, many more Duckburg themed elongated coins listed in the ParkPennies Guides, particularly in the Tokyo Disneyland Resort Guides. Please use the search box at the top of this page to find more via image descriptions.

*This fun Donald Dack pressed coin Donald Dack pressed coin was shared by a longtime collector and friend, Dee D. The coin is believed to have been pressed on 5p euro, Russia 50 kopeck, Mexican bi metallic coins and a larger copper coin. The acquisition of this coin required some detective work. Thankfully Dee was up to the task and shared his find with us. Dee adds that these coins are currently listed on PennyCollector.Com as having been in Minsk, Belarus*. But, based on seller information, the machine was retired a long time ago.

The Carl Barks Fan Club, which was active until 2020, issued a series of only three "pinched pennies" to club members in Carl's honor. We've pictured an example of the C. B. F. C. When asked, the roller stated that a limited number of cents and "less than ten sets" of nickels, dimes, and quarters had been rolled in total. Also that the dies were retired and would be canceled. We will update this listing with an image of the canceled coin as soon as we have a coin to scan.

2010 Comic Con International
Scrooge McDuck "Pinched" Pressed Coins

Distributed by Heritage Auction Galleries in 2010

Art work created for the DO0014 Carl Barks Scrooge McDuck Comic Con pressed coins. Ray Dillard, roller Heritage Auction Galleries distributed pressed cents at Comic-ConDO0014 Vertical Scrooge McDuck pinched penny, elongated nickel, elongated dime, and elongated quarter. Scrooge McDuck, also known as Uncle Scrooge, with his cane and Bag 'o Money! Inscribed "CARL BARKS, © DISNEY" at the base of the image, classic dot or bead border, initials RWD replace the dot at the center of the coin grip for Raymond W. Dillard, the well known elongated coin collector, designer, and manufacturer. This Disney themed elongated coin is said to be the last done by the very well respected engraver, Bill Grencavich before his retirement. Originally pressed on U.S. copper cents for distribution and very limited four coin presentation sets pictured below (penny, nickel, dime, quarter). Reportedly, at a later time, six sets of elongated coins were made for collectors which included a Steel Cent, Indian Head Cent, Brass Slug, Kennedy Half Dollar, Susan B. Anthony Dollar, Sacagawea Dollar, Canadian Cent, Buffalo Nickel, Silver Quarter, British Half Penny, and Polish Coin.
Reverse: "Ink" image of the original coin is visible on the reverse of the cents. A "ghost" of the original coins remain in relief on the reverses of the nickels, dimes, and quarters.
In a July 3rd 2010 conversation, Mr. Dillard mentioned to Robert Hoff of ParkPennies.com that he had recently pressed and shipped 1,000 cents per an order he had received from Heritage Auctions. Additionally, that six penny, nickel, dime, quarter sets packaged in plastic were sent to Heritage. All elongated coins were for use as promotional items by the auctioneer. (A trusted source later reported to ParkPennies.com that these coins were distributed at the Comic-Con International 2010 held July 20-24, 2010 at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California.)
Collectors around the world recognize Heritage Auction Galleries as the world's largest auctioneer collectibles including Scrooge McDuck collectibles, comics, Disneyana, etc. The inclusion of a "© DISNEY" suggests placement in this guide section as Disney Off-Site coins e.g. elongated coins licensed by Disney, but, not issued by any Disney Resort. ParkPennies.com has contacted Heritage Auction Galleries for their confirmations, corrections, contributions to the back story of this special elongated coin. To date, they have been very gracious, however, without significant comment on the subject.
Carl Barks elongated coins without "© DISNEY" have been issued by the Carl Barks Fan Club, CBFC. We hope to add a page dedicated to these coins in the near future. Image of a Carl Barks Fan Club Coin here.
Reports of this coin by both Nancy Wooten and Ray Dillard were first believed to be of two different coins. Therefore we give credit to both of these well known and respected elongated coin collectors for this find. (This Disneyland pressed coin number made with the possibly now canceled #DOP0008.0.0 obverse elongated coin die in its original "0" state / variation, paired with a blank "0" reverse coin die.)
