Tokyo Disneyland Ups Disneyland USA's
Anniversary Pressed Penny Set by 5!
Pressed pennies were late to arrive at The Tokyo Disneyland Resort. But, they didn't waste any time getting caught up. That is to say there is at least the appearance of competition between the two parks.... Sorry, I'm getting ahead of the story.
Tokyo Disneyland opened April 15, 1983 and introduced "pressed pennies" for the first time in 1996. Since then, they have strived to provide "pressed penny" collectors with the things they wanted most, collectable, quality, elongated souvenirs. The Tokyo Disneyland coin of the month series was an early example of that and has been a big hit. On April 10th, 2008, the Tokyo Disneyland Resort began issuing this 25th Anniversary collection. There were some 25th Anniversary penny presses onstage until the end of the celebration on April 14, 2009.
Each of the souvenir medals was themed for the 25th Anniversary and there was also a special penny collecting book and key chain / phone charm! We believe this page lists a complete set of 56 medals. (18 from Tokyo Disneyland, 14 from the Tokyo DisneySea Park, and 24 from the the Tokyo Disneyland Resort Hotels.) Doesn't this Tokyo "pressed penny" collection remind you of the 51 pressed pennies offered in 2005 by Disneyland USA, the 50th Anniversary Pressed Penny Collection?
This guide page lists each of the Tokyo Disneyland Resort elongated souvenirs featuring the 25 years logo and is divided into three sections. Each section is based on the location of the issuing penny press machine. The Tokyo Disneyland 25th Anniversary penny collecting book has 54 pockets. (The 25th set may have 56 coins?) This very nicely themed penny collecting book sold for 1300 Yen in Japan or about $13.00 USS in 2008.
Unfortunately, the book does not hold a "pressed penny" or medal in its covers as do some of the books listed in the Tokyo Disneyland Penny Collection Books and Holders guide. However, there is only a graphic image of a metal souvenir on the cover. Many collectors have commented about the exceptional art work featured on some of the Tokyo Disneyland penny collecting books which makes them a very nice pressed penny related collectible on their own.
Another fun 25th related item is the Tokyo Disneyland 25th Anniversary penny collecting book... KEY CHAIN! This product is new to Disney collectibles. The tiny key ring penny collection book is made of a soft silicone and features eight elongated souvenir pockets, each large enough to hold a Tokyo Disneyland elongated souvenir.
Cost at the park is 780 Yen, about $7.50 USD in 2008.
The exceptionally beautiful elongated coin inside the book pocket is shown for illustration purposes only.
Please note that long term storage of medals in these books is not recommended.
The Fifty-Six 25th Anniversary issues above are believed to be the complete set. The year-long 25th Anniversary celebration ended 4/14/09. All remaining coins were taken offstage at that time.
