Greetings & Salutations!
I just sent out the second digest for the list. I'm doing them
manually as Xmission is still ignoring my requests for help. I noticed a
couple things I feel the need to bring up, however.
We have a fairly large proportion of 'me too' messages. On this list
a 'me too' message is essentially when someone says "I just got a few
copies of x who wants one?" and people reply "I want one". The list
exists for this purpose, but please send these "me too" messages directly
to the original poster via 'e-mail'. Rarely is a third party interested
in these posts and they just fill mailboxes needlessly.
The primary reason people give for unsubscribing from the list is
"too much traffic". What this actually means is: "too much stuff I don't
care about". What they're usually talking about is off-topic posts and
'me too' messages.
Personally, I enjoy the off-topic messages and think they help
build friendships and a sense of community. As do the frquent one-liner
jokes that appear as responses. These are the things that keep a list
from being dry and boring. But the 'me too' messages really do nothing
for the list as a whole.
I know that I am guilty of all of the above offenses, but the
only one I intend to curb is the 'me too' messages. I'd appreciate the
cooperation of the rest of the list in doing the same thing.

Chris, and anyone with a text only browser...
You can try this and see if it works...
If you are able to see the html source of a page, read on... Many
browsers allow you to download the source html. If you have the source,
you can read the paths to the images and download them. Example:

You're absolutely right! This was EXACTLY the kind of 'me too'
message that we should try to avoid. As I said in the original message,
I'm guilty of these things too. Thanx for setting me straight.
I do want to make clear that I was not trying to encourage fewer
messages overall, but rather fewer messages of the type Alan caught me
posting above. Many of us on the list LOVE the traffic and would be just
as happy with more. We just all need to think if what we're posting has
any possibility of being of interest to more then one other person on the
list.

This thread had only interested me in that I had realized (besides Las
Vegas-type Casino dollar "tokens" - I assume that one collects these
too) that some places produce tokens with some markings. Many are
blanks, tho'. I have a 6 year old which necessitates buying a few of
these tokens when we visit an arcade, i.e., Chuck E. Cheese, and I
always end up with at least one in a pocket or wallet when I get home
and never remembering to take it with me the next time I visit the same
said place.
In Los Angeles the Metro Metro Transportation Authority sells tokens
with the big M on it for use on the buses and rail systems.

in Southern California there are no toll roads except those that use
electronic devices, otherwise what are called highways in other states
are freeways in California, but i think highway tokens are actually toll
road tokens. I would hope that you would get some sort of discount when
you buy tokens as opposed to paying real coins when you purchase them.
In Los Angeles, the Metro tokens work like this.. You buy them by the
bag which amounts to $0.90 per token and the normal cash fare is $1.25
for buses and around $3.00 for the rail system (light and subway).
For example...So if the toll is 35=A2 and instead of throwing into the
machine two coins you just insert one token.
In California they are starting to use "smart tokens." Electronic
devices that send out a little message indicating you the payee and this
is deducted from your prepaid account. I suppose if all the tollroads
in the U.S. went to this system, then eventually tollroad tokens would
become more valuable???
And if you are like me..buy them and not use them, the agency make a
little money.

See, now this is where things start getting tricky. Personally,
I'd much prefer a list lose members because of too much traffic instead
of not enough.
Let's use the recent "highway tokens" thread as an example.
Jeff's original post was, indeed, off-topic. I still think it
has a place here for several reasons: 1) Jeff is a regular poster of EC
info so he gets a little more leeway then someone who just makes
off-topic posts, 2) Many EC collectors also collect other exonumia so
there is a fair chance that someone else on the list would be interested,
3) should number 2 be accurate this could well lead to an EC/token
trade. 4) It was short, to the point, and labeled OT in the subject.
Now I'm going to memory on what replies it generated so forgive
me if I miss or mis-represent any.
Bob Frtisch replied that he may be interested in purchasing them.
This is something that only Bob and Jeff would really care about, so
should have been handled off list.
Melinda asked for clarification of what a highway token is. This
is on-topic for reasons 2, 3 and 4 that the original message was
on-topic. By asking the entire list Melinda is more likely to get better
quantity/quality information by asking multiple people rather then asking
one person. Besides, there could well be others asking the same but
afraid/unwilling to post it. Which leads to...
Alan's description/explanation of highway tokens. This, also,
was relevant to the list as others could well be interested in the answer
and by always answering general questions posted to the list on the the
list we avoid "Can someone explain this to me as well" posts.
I'm not sure if I posted a reply to any of these messages as I
did think about doing so, but can't recall what I wrote, so don't believe
I did. I say this here so as not to give the impression that I'm
"glossing over" my own posts.
This has gotten a lot longer than I intended (like I've ever
written a SHORT post ;), but I think it's important to make this clear.
When replying/posting to the list you want to ask yourself one
simple question. Is there ANY chance more then one person on the list
cares to read the message? If the answer is yes, post it to the list.
The last thing I want to do is discourage people from posting anything here.

This is how I began collecting amusement tokens! I now have a
couple hundred. Amusement tokens are probably the only area of exonumia
that's cheaper to collect then elongates.
And to bring things slightly onto topic...
If anyone finds any amusement tokens in their pockets set 'em
aside in your trade stock and I'll accept 'em as one PEU in trade value
for elongates (assuming they're ones I don't have of course).

Well, Alan, did a fine job of answering the question directly, so
I won't go into that again, but I wanted to point out for general
consumption that transportation tokens (of which highway tokens are a
part) is one of the largest areas of exonumia collection (exonumia is
essentially non-legal tender).
The Token and Medal Society (TAMS) and the American Vecturist
Society (AVS) are the two main organisations for transportation token
collectors. For contact info check out the ANA web site at
http://www.money.org.

Well, the Northern California list members had a "mini-meet"
tonight. Mickey was kind enough to offer his home, so we met there for
pizza, trade and talk. Who was there? Mickey and family, Jeff and wife,
and myself.
I got there a little early and Mickey, his wife (who's name I've
already forgotten. Many apologies, but I'm horrible with names)
discussed eBay and online auctions until Jeff and Deidre arrived. Once
they got there (and we got the dog to stop howling ;) it took all of five
seconds to have the binders laid out.
We talked and traded (and ate a little pizza) for the next FOUR
and a HALF HOURS! Woo Hoo!! Needless to say, both wives present were
pretty ready for things to wind up, but I was having a blast (and I think
Mickey and Jeff were both going fairly strong at the end as well.
Mickey has framed his complete Disney set of elongates and they
look wonderful. Perhaps he can be persuaded to describe it for the list
(nudge, nudge).
Speaking of Disney coins, between the three of us we had four
copies of DIS-WDW-13. Amazingly enough, all four were different, so I
have identified four of the six variants. Unfortunately none of us knows
which machine our coins came from, but perhaps we will be able to figure
that out in the future.
Trading went well. Roughly a hundred coins changed hands tonight
between the three of us. Both Jeff and Mickey managed to pull out almost
the same number of coins from my trade stock as I pulled from theirs so
that made my trades flow pretty smoothly. I managed to aquire a few more
donations to the auction as well :)
Discussion was pretty much all over the elongated map. We spent
a fair amount of time on Jeff and Deidre's penny hunting road trip out
here from Boston, penny collecting stories, Disney coins (from both
coasts), what direction the internet EC community should/will take and
how to move things along, the list itself and the people hereon (sorry,
no really juicy gossip), TEC and my disputes with the organization and
some of the people there-in (all of which has been mentioned here
before), which coins to roll on, machine companies, the possibilty of
changes to US coins and the effect on elongates, painting elongates
(which both Deidre and I have been doing), and general "small talk"
topics (including some detailed wather stuff beleive it or not).
What came of all this talk? Well I think we all had a really
good time and learned more about each other as well as ECs, but I don't
recall solving any of the world's problems. Not really any specifics to
be shared that I can think of, though the others might want to throw in
something.
Overall it was a blast. Still haven't met a list member that
didn't seem like a genuinely nice person. I highly recommend jumping on
any opportunity you have to get together with other collectors like this
and I'm even more excited now about the "holiday" list-meet at Disneyland.

Well, I remembered a topic from the meet last night that should
make for an interesting and informative discussion:
Jeff has started placing his elongates in 2x2s and is using
rubber cement to seal them rather then staples. I have heard of people
using double sided tape as well. Both of these methods leave the 2x2
looking sharper then having staples thru it. Personally, I use staples
simply because it's fast, easy and cheap.
How do you seal your 2x2s and can you think of any benefits or
drawbacks of using one system over another?

and I basically said I don't see how as long as it doesn't come into
contact with the coins (and in that case I wsan't sure).

I've seen the ads for these, but don't they run like a quarter
apiece instead of the couple cents a piece that the regular 2x2s cost? I
also don't know if they have elongate 2x2s, but I highly doubt it at the
moment. If there's enough interest we could probably get them to though.

It's often used to glue and seal glass seams in aquariums. It comes in
colors,
most would use clear. Costs about $2-3.00 for a toothpaste tube size.

to be taken over by Premier Parks next year. One of the things they're
going to do is remove the Warner Bros. cartoon characters from the park.
I know there are numerous penny machines in SFOT. Can someone in Texas
make it a priority to get to SFOT before the end of the year? Obviously
I'm interested in one of these sets as are many others on the list. And
soon they'll be gone 'forever'.

Hello All,
I'm not sure if this is on the location keeper list or not (I havent had
much time to check lately) but i was a Toms Farms in Corona (CA) yesterday
and no sooner did I say this place needs a penny machine when I turned to
my left and there was a machine. It has one design -a farmer holding a
pitchfork and says "Tom's Farms/Since 1971/Farmers Market".
Also my sister (who lives in Salt Lake City) heard that at the Childrens
Museum there is this device that remembles that of a hamsters wheel. This
one a person actually walks around in the giant wheel and this smashes the
penny. She went to the Museum and said it was not working, there is a
plexi-glass box to the right of the wheel which houses all the gears and as
you walk your suppose to be able to see the gears move. When she was in
another part of the Museum she found a smashed penny (weird huh!) It says
"University of Utah/Engineering Dept" so that must have been what the
wheel-device smashes out when working.

through the place with a backback full of change, I mean that stuff is HEAVY.
You should see me walking through Disneyland carrying my wife's purse with

Wow! I was just hoping to find a volunteer to go for me. I
didn't expect this kind of reaction. I am glad to see it though! I'm
going to try to consolidate my replies to the various messages into this one.
Bert proposed that anybody interested send $5 towards admission
cost and copper pennies for rolling. Well, if the person goes fills all
the requests made so far their largest expense is not going to be park
admission, but the 50c a pop elongating fees. I am assuming that Bert
intended to offer the $5 and pennies and still trade on a one-for-one
basis for the coins themselves.
Which brings me to Davelle's suggestion of "adding in 'a little
extra' as a thank-you for someone doing this?" Another great suggestion
as this will likely be a primarily collecting focused trip. As I write
this there have been 8 sets requested. Whoever makes this journey will
certainly spend the majority of their time finding and rolling coins.
Not to mention the time at home afterwards to seperate package and mail
all the sets out. This comes from my recent experiences rolling multiple
sets at Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm.
Gina asked if anyone knows how many coins are in the set. Does
anyone have any idea? As far as I know we haven't had any reports of
specific locations or a count of machines. Judging by Six Flags Magic
Mountain I would assume that the majority (if not all) of the machines
will be located inside shops. The SFoT web site lists 11 shops. So, I'd
say there are probably between 15 and 30 coins available. DOn't ask how
I did the math, it's merely an educated guess.
All things considered this is what I propose. Should someone
step forward willing to collect all of the sets requested (and I'm sure
there will be at least two more requests in the near future) I think each
persoan requesting a set should offer $5 per set in addition to trading
as usual for the coins themselves. I am perfectly willing to do this
myself although I'll be offline for sometime so may not be around to make
the offer.
As far as sending along your own coins to roll I have a couple
comments.
1) When someone is rolling multiple sets it can be extremely
difficult to sperate out one persons coins from another. In other words,
if someone is going to roll all of these, please have everyone send them
interchangeable pennies (not wheaties for one, steelies for another, and
painted stock for a third). If you want to send pennies just send
coppers. Wether they're wheaties or memorials don't expect the EXACT
same coin back.
2) How many are you going to send the person? No one has any
real idea how many coins are in the set. If our volunteer sends out a
call for coins because they don't think they have enough coppers, then
I'd recommend each person requesting a set mail off a roll and consider
it a further bonus to our hardy volunteer. Again, I am more then willing
to do the same should I be around when the request is made.
3) It takes time for mail to get places. I, for one, would hate
to see our volunteer postponing their trip in order to wait for the last
person's coins to arrive. Time is limited and as we're entering the
holiday season our volunteer will surely be busy as well. The longer
they wait the more difficult it will be.

too shabby either. (well, subtract out $31.95 for the ticket as there's
going to be very little park time left) and a $23.05 bonus still isn't
too shabby.
Bear in mind folks we still don't have a volunteer. And,
frankly, I wouldn't blame one for not coming forward at this point even
with the financial and goodwill bonus. Perhaps we need a couple

Short answer: Just SFoT
Long answer: Okay, here's the deal as I understand it. Six Flags
Theme Parks (SFTP) OPERATES the parks known as Six Flags which are all
actually OWNED by different companies, in this case Six Flags Texas
(SFT). SFTP's contract with SFT to operate SFoT (aren't acronyms fun? ;)
expires 12/31/97. Negotiations for a new contract were unsuccessful and
Premeire Parks (PP) going to be taking over the park (on a 30 year
contract) as of 1/1/98 or possibly 1/31/98 (but SFoT is closed in January
anyway). One of the sticking points in contract negotiations was that
the owners of SFT originally opened the park as a historical Texas
themepark (similar to KBF in California) and were not happy with Warner
Bros. coming in with all of thier licensed product.
From the chatter on rec.roller.coasters (r.r.c.) SFTP has had
some pretty tough negotiations lately and has more coming up, although
they just signed Six Flags Over Georgia (SFoG) to a new contract last
year so we're safe on that one.
SFoT is the only major park change I'm aware of for this year,
although Premier also 'recently' purchased Kentucky Kingdom I don't know
of any major changes there and am not sure how 'recent' that purchase was.
Now that I think of it, I just saw today that Six Flags Astroworld has
been renamed Six Flags Houston. Not sure when this happened or if the
name change has actually gone into effect at the park yet. If so, this
would be another project for our TX volunteer should one materialize.
(Please don't start posting 'I want and Astroworld set' to the list
unless/until this name change gets confirmed and we get a volunteer to
hit the park.)
BTW, SFT owns the rights to the name 'Six Flags Over Texas' until
the year 2009, so the name probably won't be changing very soon, although
PP does have a track record of changing park names.
a "mule" when spoken of in elongates denotes a coin with an engraving
on both sides. They may or may not be unrelated images. Alot of the
older issues would have an event such as a worlds fair on the obverse and
an advertisement for say" armor meats" on the reverse .

This message doesn't deal at all with ECs and only somewhat with
the list, but I consider you all friends so want to let you know what's
up. My final "desperate plan" to aquire funds in order to make the move
South has fallen thru. <sigh> As of tomorrow, I'm officially evicted
from my current apartment and I don't expect the landlord to cut me any
more slack so he'll probably arrive with the sherriff in the morning.
I'll be jumping online occaisonally this evening to 'finish up' a few
things and possibly tomorrow morning as well.
I'm going to be moving into The Beast (my car) with what little
stuff I can carry there leaving room for pennies, penny paperwork, the
'puter and sleeping room. This means I've got to leave behind not only
my furniture, etc., but also my rather substantial vampire collection. A
painful loss indeed, but there aren't any other options left. At least
the penny collection only takes up a small amount of floorboard space. :)
Anywayz, this isn't supposed to be a 'poor Aahz' letter. I just
don't know how long I'm going to be off-line or where/when I will be
surfacing again. Bert's promised to keep an eye on the list, but don't
ask too much of him as it's not really his gig. If it looks like I'm
going to be 'gone' for a while then I'll get the Auction donations to
one of the more active list members and y'all can decide wether to keep
the list up as is or whatever and what to do about the auction. If there
is to be no auction then the donations will be returned to the donators.
Even if I can't get back here for quite some time I sincerely
hope that the list continues in some form. A lot of people have spent a

I REALLY appreciate the thought, Trey, but I've allowed myself to

on being far more generous then I deserve I will go ahead and post this

I'd like to thank you all again for your assistance and emotional
support (and for tolerating your mailboxes being flooded with messages

Most of us veterens roll all our cent ec's on copper cents.
But, there are many new collectors / traders here. So,
if you do not use copper, or have zinc trades, PLEASE
so note on your trade list. Many people will "assume"
that all coins are copper unless otherwise stated. Some
people do not collect zinc at all, others collect both. If
copper, you may want to note if it is a "wheatie", "BU",
etc.

So, once we find a volunteer to get this set I recommend they

There are two appropriate newsgroups: rec.roller.coasters and
rec.parks.theme (maybe rec.park.theme). I haven't gone that route myself
as they can take days to distribute the message and I may not be around to
get their response.
Those of you on AOL or another large national ISP may want to
check the availability of localized texas newsgroups also, presumably
they'd be in a tx.* heirarchy.

I have a few updates for you web pages:
My son just returned from a trip to Maui. He found the coin you
have mentioned, but I would add that the machine is located at
the Airport, in the gift shop. The airport is at Kahalui, Maui.
The information you show for the coin is correct.
On the other side of the Island he found another machine. This
one was located at Ka'anapali Beach - at the Whaling Museum.
Machine is on the front porch.

Well, being relatively new to the list, I didn't have the
opportunity to respond last time, so here goes!!! I have to agree
with Bob, though I see Chris' point also. I see no problem with not
specifying whether a coin is zinc or not on an extensive list, such
as the one Chris has, but I know that I do like to know what I'm
trading for. If everyone would confirm what the coin they were
sending was prior to sending it, it would give the recipient a
chance to accept coin, or choose another.
Recently I sent some coins which were zinc in a trade, without
thinking to mention what they were. The recipient was rather
distressed when he received them. I have since exchanged the coins,
and you can be sure that won't happen again, as I won't offer any of
my old stock, no matter how badly I want to make the trade. Since I
only use copper now, you can all be sure of what you are getting
from me, unless I note otherwise.
I think that we all are 'educated' shortly after joining this list,
and are now pressing coins only on copper, but the older coins in
our collections were most likely collected at a time when we thought
that the best coin to use was a 'shiny' one. Many of us started
with souvenirs for our children, and when they would come to us
asking for a 'shiny penny' to use, of course we would look high and
low for the required coin.
Communication is the key here, and as long as we all communicate
clearly with each other and don't try to 'put one over' on someone,
we should be able to continue to function well as a group.

Yes, all this info is important to me on a trade list AS WELL AS on
location keeper sites. I don't need all this detail listed on every trade
list. It would be nice to have all this info on location keeper sites
(plural) so that I could take a trade list and look up a detailed (text)
description AND see a picture of the coin I am trading for. Knowing if
the coin is a pre-82, wheat or zinc (assuming pennies) is important to
me. I am using uncirculated 1960s pennies for my trading stock now, and
I'd like to get similar quality coins in trade. I started off trading
zincs (hey, I didn't know better till Jeff Dixon set me straight - Thanks

One thing I would like to be sure we have a standard way of describing is
2 sided (mule) coins. I am finding more and more in my smashing trips and
trading... Also, it would be nice to know if a coin was smashed with a
die meant for a smaller coin. By this I mean a large coin (like my Susan
B. Anthony's) that were run through a penny die, so the image is much
smaller than the coin. I still will trade for these, but I would like to
know the images are smaller...
When coins come from Rollers, it would be nice to know this from the web
sites... If a coin is available from a location, I can decide if I want
to try and visit it or trade for it. If it is a 'roller coin' then I can
decide if I want to trade for it, or possible buy it from the roller...
Supporting rollers is important!
Sooo, a trade list with Chris' catalog number and Pre-82/wheat/zinc/ is
what I would like. Then I could go to one of several web sites and see
the coin (1 like it) and decide to trade or not.
Yes, I am willing to build a site that includes images of coins (both
inline images and available for separate download) IF you all are willing
to help scan the images. I can do some scanning, but there's more to it
than any 1 person can handle. I think the images should be sent to
several sites, so that no one site becomes a point of failure (hmmmm, I'm
starting to sound like an engineer!)... Nuff said...

I think all airports would be natural spots for penny machines!

Well, I tried the phone number and no ansewr after10 rings. Also
did a Big Yellow Search on "Horton Mercantile" and no such business is
listed in any yellow pages nationwide. So I'd say they're no longer in
business.

Should we expand our cataloging efforts to include "no longer available"
vs still available? I got a coin from Boston (in trading) and was happy
to no it was no longer available.
Again, let's keep this as simple as possible. I think trading lists and
location keeper sites that are integrated make lots of sense. This way we
can make our trade lists short and sweat, and look up all the detailed
info (when the machine was last scene, info about a certain roller, etc)
on web sites...
Example:

Web Site (What it would contain)

Of course, this may explain why we've never seen your complete
trade list posted ;) It takes a lot of time to include all that detail.

This is one of the long term goals. Although I'd actually prefer
to see the info split into two areas (linked obviously). One area would
be the virtual penny museum. The VPM would have coins listed by category
number with complete descriptions, an image available and a link to the
appropriate LK information.
The second area would be the location keepers siteS. These would
have, well, location information. Location information includes machine
location/directions (both as detailed as possible), the catalog number of
the coin (remember, the title is part of the number), recent status of
the machine, and a link to the relevant portion of the VPM.
Putting all of this information in one place seems to me to not
only create more work/bandwidth/server space needs, but also will tend to
"clutter up" both sites.
That said, we don't have either the VPM or really detailed LK
sites yet (no, Bert, that's not a crack, you're doing a great job!) All
of this is going to take time and then there are always going to be
NUMEROUS coins that haven't been added yet. I need to know what people
want on a trade list NOW.

I don't quite understand that there's NOT a standard way of
describing two-sided coins or mules. It seems to me that you simply list
it as such:
XX-YYY-1 Sample Mule
obv. h. Image, "Text/Text"
rev. v. Image, "Text/Text/Text"
The only dfference between listing a two sided coin and a one
sided coin is the addition of obverse (obv.) and reverse (rev.) As for
deciding which side is which, that'll basically be done by the first
person to so list the coin 8-)

I couldn't agree more that this is an important piece of
information! I have several large denomination coins that were rolled
with penny dies, and frankly I thnk they're really ugly. On the other
hand I think the quarters pressed on quarter dies are magnificent.

Unfortunately it is still some time off. I still need an overall prioity
list of what's important to people so that when I start making trade
lists again I hit the key areas, but don't waste hours with unwanted info.

Speaking of scanning...has anyone used a digital camera to take
pictures of elongates? It seems to me this would be a much faster/easier

I'm assuming you mean 'trade list efforts'. The catalog is, of
course, covering NLA issues. I think the NLA vs CA issue is refelcted in
the PEU value assigned to the coins, so don't see the need to add yet
another piece of information.

That's the whole purpose of creating the catalog in the first
place. With DL coins we can all simply refer to them by number now as
everyone who wants one should have a copy of the list and it's also
posted on Kathy's Penny Page.
However, it's going to take time to build up all of these sites
and we can't count on you and Kathy doing it alone! As several people
know I am strongly considering setting up a new domain for elongates.
However, aside from my current personal problems, I am going to need a
lot of help in setiting up the web site and (as Bert mentioned earlier)
doing the scanning. I'd like to see anyone with server space available
(most ISP accounts come with some server space) provide help out with
donating some space for the LK and museum sites.

Knott's doesn't close for the winter. They're open year round.
As for the machines, I doubt they will be removed anytime in the
near future. There was no mention of a name change and with the history
behind KBF I see no reason they would change it. The SFoT situation is
very different in that a large reason for the change in management
companies (SF to Premier) was that the owners wanted to get rid of the
Warner licensing and get back to history. No such comments have been
made regarding KBF. And none of their coins depict licensed characters
anyway, except for the one Camp Sboopy quarter.

Yes, I asked a girl in a gift shop if I could have an ol' copper cent and she
said, "You're the first person to ever ask me for anything but a shinny new
one! Why?"
Now, I've learned from Bert and others, to carry my own "BU's".
I can see why it is a problem for some to state zinc or copper on their
lists. It is
important to some, but, can be covered by the means suggested. This AM I
spoke
with a list member on the phone, he asked about my Splash Mountain ec. I
told him first off that it was zinc. End of trade. I'm glad I didn't send
it to him or bargain a trade only to find out that the zinc wouldn't work.
Many have read my posts and received offers of trades from me, and I do
include any thing bad about the coin that I can see. I'll also say it's nice
if it looks that way to me. But then, my lists are generally *real* short so
I still have the luxury of such notes.

elongated coins a few weeks ago in the San Diego Union and I was hooked.
I got my first coin here in Carlsbad (a windmill from the Pea Soup
Andersen's restuarant) in September and I'm now up to about 15 different
designs from the San Diego region. (My wife thinks that I'm crazy but
that isn't anything new.) I am working my way around the area and would
appreciate any input as to machines in San Diego County. My internet
link is through work and I handle alot of law enforcement inquiries so I
will probably subscribe to the digest version of this list. If you would

P.S. Carlsbad will be the home of the new LEGO Land USA in 1999. They

Many low end ($600) digital camera's have focal lengths that prevent good
(macro) shots. The QuickTake 100, 150 and 200 are great for shooting the
EC machines - but terrible for pennies (it just won't work). The AppleOne
Scanner does a great job on coins... (Caveat: I am no longer an Apple
employee but have lots of digital camera experience...).

uncircs and BU's from doesn't want to sell me (numismatic heathen) any

I have not been able to update the pages for several weeks... So be sure
to check out these recently discovered sites:

Another potential, but minor, snag in the Aahz catalog could be the naming of
the sets.
Below, PGA is used for Paramount's Great America.
When this park was built, it was Marriott's Great America. (MGA) It was sold
temporarily to the City of Santa Clara where it was known as Great America.
(GA) Paramount then bought it thusly, Paramount's Great America.
What if Six Flags bought it, SFGA?
Is the catalog changed when the park name is changed?
Of course we could cross that bridge when we come to it.

Remember, Jeff is from Maine and Boston.
He is still pondering the concept that in coastal California we have only two
seasons, Warmer and dry and cooler and wet.
It's something that I'm sure he'll get to love.
But closer to where we live, Great America and Marine World are both closed

Good news and bad.
At long last, I have been offered two sets of Disneyland Tokyo pressed
"cents". I'm told there are nine different coins in each set and they are
offered at $50.00 per or $90.00 for both. I'm supposed to meet the guy if
I'm interested. I'm thinking they are
about $40.00 a set over priced. I'd hope someone else could offer them for
less.
I would pick up a set if someone wanted to trade some "old Disney" ec's (that
I'm missing in my set) for them. I'm just not sure I'd put out so much for
TDL ec's even if they are built better or get better mileage. :-) What would
you do?

If someone's going to be on Oahu, There's a possibility that the Arizona
Memorial at Pearl Harbor has an EC machine.
I just picked-up an elongate at coin shop that has the USS Arizona
memorial pictured. It has text "1152 entombed" and Dec. 7, 1941 on opposite
sides.
It looks like it was left outside because it has a pitting corrosion
over the surface. It is definitely on a 1978 copper.

Since you asked, I'd wait.
More than five bucks is way too much per coin for a currently available,
though admittedly difficult to obtain, set.
As I've seen on eBay, if something gets too expensive, stop bidding. An
identical item will come along again soon enough.
Your dilema is if you buy it and another comes along cheaper, you'll
kick yourself. If you don't buy it and the machines disappear, you'll kick
yourself.
The problem that we'll have here is that is someone offers to get a few
at TDL, they'll be swamped with requests as was the situation with Six Flags.
Who wants to spend their valuable TDL time pressing pennies? Our best hope is
to connect with someone who lives there or travels there frequently.
Still, I'd go with the wait and watch.

There is no machine at the Museum or on the memorial itself. I was there
4 weeks ago, and I talked to everyone there... There IS a Frank Brazzell
machine in Waikiki with 4 designs, 1 of which is an Arizona Memorial. I

There's a typo in my text, Mickey is right, it is "1152 entombed." A bit
of history, I was a Boy Scout in 1968 and was part of the memorial
service which we performed with a Navy Chaplain -- 7am on the memorial, 7
Dec 68. It was a very moving experience, even as a kid.
There are 2 Arizona Memorial pennies... Once I get my web site re-hosted
I will scan pictures of them both and get them on the new web site...

This is GREAT news! I always wanted to go to a LEGO Land! I'd
be very surprised if either current park has machines as they are still
pretty rare overseas. I don't KNOW, I just doubt it. Definetly worth

Wow, if they were to come thru with 15 sets that'd be one heck of
a friendship. Aside from the time, the cash outlay on 15 sets of 9 coins
is 13,500 yen or $98.00 plus postage. But hey, who am I to question
anothers friendship :)
I've got four Tokyo locals planningtrips in November who have
promised to look for me and one US citizen who's over there on vvacation
right now. The point? These sets WILL arrive thru someone and at far
less then $50 a pop.

Welcome Bill,
Your next logical step would be to load up on ECs (elongated coins) from
your area because I and probably others around the country need SD coins for
our collections. I'd love to trade some of my San Francisco area coins for
whatever you can get down there! Trading builds up your collection very
quickly with coins that you might not ever be able to get on your own such as
Niagra Falls (thanks Jeff).

I was thinking about taking a heavy wire brush in the coin shop and
asking for advice on how to best polish up those steel pennies I just
bought from them! 8-)

Yes, I was here when you were at the ANA. I joined the department in
July of 1985 so we may have met somewhere along the line.
No problem with waiting for the Digest version of the list. I enjoy

My aunt was just in Oatman last week and since I have my family members
keep an eye out for machines-she looked for an Oatman machine. She had
heard there was one there, but could not find it. She said she went in
every store, searched high and low and finally asked a store clerk who said
it had been removed. My aunt also tells all the store employees she talks

Well, there aren't really any 'rules', but I suppose you could
say there are some 'preferred practices ;)
In 1982 the mint changed the metal content in pennies from
primarily copper to copper coated zinc. When you elongate one of these
coins you will often see silver traces in it. This is the zinc showing
through. Most people find this very unnatractive.
So, 1982 and later pennies are referred to as 'zincs' or
'zincies' and are generally seen as bad.
1981 and earlier pennies are reffered to as coppers (no relation
to Ben or Bill ;) and are generally good.
As for finding coppers, I find many in pocket change, but a more
realiable source is your local coin shop. you can usually get rolls of
coppers from them for around $1. Go in and talk to them, I'm sure
they'll work out something for you. I always keep my eyes open for bulk
purchases of wheaties (wheat back pennies) as well at auctions, shows and
shops). Remember that you don't want to spend more then 2 or 3 cnts per
copper or wheatie, though.

One of my current projects is to work up a glossary of sorts.
The term roller typically refers to a person who rolls coins on a rolling
machine. Of course, this is not EXACT, but it is preferred. Similar is
that when I say 'typewriter' most people think of the machine whereas
originally that term referred to the person who operated a typewritig
machine. (I hope that all makes sense).

Never made it up there, but be sure to check out the casinos!
Many Vegas casinos have machines, so I would expct their Renoe/Tahoe
counterparts to have them as well!

Work has begun on the WDW catalogging. Since I'm currently
working on it by streetlight at night it's going slow, but is
proceeding. I already have sevral questions. So...
1) There are multiple reports of the Pumbaa & imon eating worms
coin that have their names and several reports without their names. Do
both types exist?
2) Same situation for the entire MGM Studios Aladdin set
(Aladdin, Genie, Jasmine)
3) There are conflicting reports on Kenny's lists of a coin
design on the Hunchback MGM set. Early reports include the third die
containing a group shot of Quasi, Esmeralda and Phoebus. Later reports
have the third die being the Gargoyles. Anyone have a sample of the
first one?
4) There is a coin in the pirates Bazaar that depicts "captian
bones pirate" over the words Magic Kingdom. Does anyone know if this
pirate has a name?

Solvang machines: One located in Friedreichs Square ( Not sure if that is
exactly correct name), near the store that sells Soooouthwest items,
however when we were there the machine was broken, on the way to being
repaired. But the saleswoman had one penny left that the machine guy gave
her for desperate penny people. The other machine was by Santa Barbara
Ceramics.
Both machines were working at the Madonna Inn.
Morro Bay has machine.

Hi Doug, it is great to meet you online and have you join the mailing

I think Chris covered the main topic hear, not using 1982 or later Zinc
pennies... Early on (using ...'s Bulletin Board on her web site)
we had a discussion about the proper name for these coins... Pete (who
runs the Squished Penny Musuem in DC) said it best... The fun of this
hobby is that there are no rules... Unlike regular coin collecting (or
other hobbies) we all do this for the fun of it! We try to keep it
simple, and we try to keep inflated pricing out of our hobby. Yes, some
of us have paid some real (lots of) money for a few of our coins, but we
all are learning to work together to get the coins we want and NOT spend
lots of money doing it... Ask (via email to the list) any questions you
may have about the "value" of coins, ie. what is reasonable to spend on
them...
Trading is a great way to get coins... Get some San Diego or Southern CA
coins (using pre-82's) and then post a description of them to the list
and ask for anyone interested in trading to email you directly... I have
gotten some amazing coins thru trades... You'll soon learn where we all
live (all over the US and a few members outside the US)... and you can
start to set up trades for coins from many locations...
There are some discussions we have had on the list which you can see by
reading the archives of this list. Or, you can ask the questions here,
and we can resend the info. Some of the info has been archived at Kathy
...'s FAQ site (see my web page for her URL) tho Kathy is having a
little trouble with her ISP these days (same with me...). Previous
threads have included polishing coins, displaying coins in 2x2 elongated
coin holders, etc.

As many of you know, Howard Sharkey was out TEC (The Elongated
Collectors) Secretary. Howard how a battle with cancer and pass away in
September.

The TEC Sec. is a volunteer position, no pay or rewards are given to
Adele. She is doing her very best right now, picking up the work. She did

first newsletter issue... Please hang in there, Adele is working as
quickly as possible on this...
If you are about to join TEC, please print the application out (URL is
below) and mail it to Adele at her WI address, do not send it to Howard's
family... They have received many applications, and they have to turn
around and send them to Adele... Please print clearly and put your phone
number on the application -- this is only so Adele can talk to you about
any spellings, etc -- your number will NOT be published.
I highly recommend joining TEC! You will get the newsletters that are
full of great info! Many EC collectors are not on the internet and so the
best way to learn from them is to read the articles they write for the
TEC Newsletter. Ray Dillard is one of the most active "rollers" (meaning
he rolls ECs at events all over the country) and he's very active in TEC.
Ray can sell you the card board 2x2's (2 inch by 2 inch) holders with the
elongated shape cut out in the middle. These fit inside clear plastic
sheets which you can get at coin shops (I use 35MM sheets from Fry's
Electronics in San Diego) and then put the sheets into binders...
If you have any questions about TEC, just ask a member, we'll be happy to
tell you more! Oh, dues are only $10 per year, due in January, but go
ahead and send Adele your applications now... That way you will have your
name on the list as the next newsletter comes out...

The Magic Kingdom penny does *not* have the names of Pumbaa and Timon on
it, the Studios penny *does*, and the resort penny also has the names on
it.

MK without names (and with MK banner at bottom)
ST with names (with ST logo at bottom)
Resort with names (and no other markings)

Nope....the ST pennies have the names on them.....the initial lists when
they first appeared...I didn't have all the details, other than that they
were there. From looking at my paper copies of the electronic lists I

facing of the penny, that I didn't have all the details.

saw my first hand crank machine at a ski resort in Gatlinbrug, TN and bou=

one on the spot. I knew I could make some money with it in the number on=

tourist capital of the world, Orlando, FL. I was disappointed I wasn=92=

to get into any of the large tourist attractions, so =93cranked pennies=94=
at the
local fairs and fea markets for a couple of years.
To make a long story short, I designed a coin-op machine in 1986 and I g=

it into Church Street Station. I still have my hand cranker plus three

over 350 ec=92s in my collection, many of them from the late great engrav=

Frank Brazzell. I=92d be glad to do some trading.

I just received a response from the VP of merchandising at Sif
Flags Texas, and he confirmed that all of their machines are Eurolink and
that the majority (if not all) would be removed should the changeover
happen. For those of you wondering about the 'should', there's a lawsuit
going on, but its odds of success are extremely slim. 99.5% chance he
change will happen.

For those waiting patiently for this catalog to near fruition all
I can say is 'don't hold your breath'. To give some idea of the scop
involved in this effort: DL has had just over 100 coins issued. The WDW
Resorts (not counting ANY park issues) have nearly 100 issues that I know
of already. So, on with more questions...
I got one report of a quad machine in 'Typhoon Lagoon'. No
descriptions give, but all four designs reportedly had the words 'Typhoon
Lagoon' on them. Anyone have these?
I know there has been at least one coin issued at Blizzard Beach,
but I can't find my record of it. Can someone provide a description?
Also, are Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach parts of one of the
pther parks or are they essentially parks of their own?
The Bass Player from the Country Bear Jamboree - is his name Zeke
or Gomer?
Kenny lists some of the Epcot issues as having an image of
"Spaceship Earth", Jim Thorpe lists an Epcot coin as having a Geodesic
dome. Are these the same thing?

IMHO, separate parts of WDW, i.e. "Attractions", that stand on their own,

Not a quad...but a triplet.
A - is a duplicate of FL Mickey Mouse in shades standing next to a surf
board
B- is a h. Logo of Typhoon Lagoon
C - is a duplicate of FL Swimming Goofy with a tube
A & C are duplicate pennies found at Resorts.

h. Ice Gator (the Blizzard Beach mascot) "Disney's Blizzard Beach" FL Ice
Gator on skis with a tube.

Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon, River Country, Pleasure Island, and
Discovery Island are all *minor* parks at Walt Disney World. They do take
a seperate admission to get into them.
River Country has a machine, it is a single machine and is a duplicate of
the same Goofy with a tube as listed above. (This coin is also at Dixie
Landings at least).
Walt Disney World is bad about having duplicates available....though,
when I am done updating my website...I will include a page of designs
that are *missing*.
Pleasure Island has a machine with three options:
v. HS Mickey Mouse (a duplicate)
h. Pleasure Island Logo
v. HS Goofy (a duplicate)

Yep....the name of the geodsesic dome that is the *feature* of Epcot is
Spaceship Earth. Spaceship Earth is the same to Epcot that Cinderella
Castle is to the Magic Kingdom and Sleeping Beauty Castle is to
Disneyland.

Two coins here at the CBJ.
v. FS Zeke (Disney describes it as Zeke) playing an instrument....I
called it a bass, Disney calls it a banjo....well....it has a long handle
like a bass, and stands on the ground like a bass, but the instrument
part is small like a banjo....oops. "Country Bear Jamboree" is a part of
the border. "Magic Kingdom"

Hi All!
A quick question. In my search for a "complete set" of Disneyland ec's, I
have come across the Ron Dominguez ec but only in zinc. Were there any
copper cents pressed for this ec in '94?

Several of us are on the lookout for a machine. There are some =
available for $2500 and up, but that is out of our range. Do you have =
any advice on something less expensive? We are looking for lots of =
info on WDW coins, in case you have any locations/descriptions...

Greetings All,
Here's a partial report for a penny machine in Maine. A friend (in
Boston) sent me a Rockport, Maine penny. It is a harbor scene, and at the
top it says "Motif No. 1." The bottom says "Rockport, MA."
This penny is a zinc, with a lot of zinc showing, so if anyone finds this
machine, please smash me a pre-82 (or 3).
If anyone finds the machine, please ask the owner of the establishment
(what ever kind of business it is) if they know of other Maine machines,
and if they have a phone number for the machine's company, so we can try
to call and get more info...
(For the newer list members, many of the companies that own these
machines and place them out in tourist locations DON'T return our phone
calls, emails or snail mails about their locations, etc. There's a great
deal of competition for the lucrative locations, and so they don't want
to give up their good spots.)
I have asked my friend to get us more location info, so you all (in the
Northeast) can find this machine... She's a Dr. and will be at the
hospital for the 30 hours, so it may be a day of 2 before we hear back...

I am a new member, and I am also a friend of Bill Rowland ( from Carlsbad,
San Diego CA.) I collect smashed coins from places I have visited with my
family. I first heard about the EC pages on the WWW, while I was having
lunch with a friend. While on the WWW, I found your list and joined.
FYI
I just went to the San Diego Wild Animal Park yesterday and found that they
had new machines since I was last there (Dec of 96). They now have a "Heart
of Africa" and what looked like a "25th" anvr. machine at the front of the
new store, near the NEW entrance to the park. The "Heart of Africa" part of
the park is new, so these machines should also be kind of new. Does any one
else have any info. on this ?

The die was available in a machine at TDA during their open
house, so they certainly could have been rolled on coppers as well as zincs.

This really is a great organization! My wife and I have belonged for several
years now and their conventions and shows are really something to see. Our
interest had been Disney, and the EC's didn't start until last summer, where

My in-laws just came back from a trip to Branson, Missouri. They =
traveled through Joplin, Missouri and picked up a Route 66 coin from the =
largest McDonalds in the USA. They were travelling on Route 66 along a =
stretch just west of Joplin which is a toll road. They said the =
McDonalds restaurant "arched" over top of the tollway. They took =
pictures and if you are interested, I'll scan the photo once they get =
them developed.
They also picked up a coin from Dick's 5&10 in downtown Branson.

Um...not really...TDA id the Team Disney Administration
building. I assume it's kinda like corporate headquarters. They had an
open house (don't have the dates handy, but they're in the TDA portion of
the DL catalog). Anyway, the open house was for three days and they had
the Ron Domniguez coin available as well as the construction hat Mickey.

Does anyone have a WDW issued Sorcerer Mickey Quarter?
My Blizzard Beach question received twodifferent responses: Davelle
reported a horizontal Ice Gator while Kenny reported a vertical Ice
Gator. Can I get each of you to double check your orientation so I can
be sure thet these are different coins?
The person who reported the quad machine at Typhoon Lagoon insists it was
indeed there in the summer of '95 and that each coin said "Typhoon
Lagoon, so I'm still looking for these.
Also on the "reported but unconfirmed" lisut is the penny with Quasimodo,
Esmerelda and Poebus.

I was at the Wild Animal Park last week and I must have missed the Heart
fo Africa machine. There was a 25th anniversary machine at the Plant
Trader store but it was out of order. They also had the elephant coin
but the rhino was no longer there.(they may have moved it around) I will
go back sometime in November and see if I can get some more info on the
designs and locations.
Stop by when you get a chance and let me look at the Heart of Africa
design.

My mistake -- I thought I said it was vertical but I guess I typed

Yep....it is like the penny found at the Caribbean Beach Resort at WDW
and the penny version is also found at Disneyland.

I'm the proud owner of a cent ec, (H) continuos dot border, "Califronia
Condor" across the top inside, Los Angeles Zoo across the inside bottom.
Picture of bird with wings out streched almost from inside edge to inside
edge just centered to the left flying toward the viewer with a mountain
showing to the right in the distance. The art work is far above average
IMHO.

We went to Horten Plaza today to check out the 2 new machines... They are
both hand cranks. The one by Longs drug is broken, to many pennies jammed
in the shoot. The other one (by Irvine Market) is working... I will try

There are MANY museums in this area. We could all divide up the list and
write (snail mail, or email) or call these museums to build a list of
EC's in the area. Once we have a list, it becomes easier for people
travelling to/thru the area to build there collections and get traders

Here's some more information,
I have the penny. The shop burned down in a fire a long time ago. I
bought the penny from an antique dealer in Maine.
This dealer told me that they rebuilt the building to match what it used
to look like. I guess it was some sort of
popular tourist spot.

No, it's just me :) Actually, according to the notes, I have in

I've never seen a Eurolink quad, but many other machine
manufacturers make a quad. And since someone else had the DL contract
before Eurolink came along, it's very possible someone had machines at WDW
before Eurolink. (Which would also explain the report of someone getting
an EC on their first trip to WDW in 1991!)
I'm in the process of scanning in my collection. This effort is mainly
towards the Virtual Penny Museum (VPM)
that many of us have talked about for the last several months.
I'm sending these scans to Bert and Kathy (Penny Page). If you would
like to see these scans, please send me e-mail.
I'll include you on the list. Even though it's pennies, I imagine most
people wouldn't really like to see them.
So far, I've scanned in the following:
The old (no longer available) Museum of Science Boston, MA coins
Some painted coins from Disneyland and San Francisco my wife did.
The Rockport, MA penny
A couple of quarters from Six Flags, Valencia, CA
Old San Francisco penny
1904 St. Louis World's Fair
and others...

Greetings & Salutations!
Due to my current financial situation I find it necessary to
auction off my rights to the WDW penny set that Big Al is currently
aquiring for me.
I say 'rights' because the sets still aren't done (as far as I
know). The sets will be mailed to Jeff Dixon when they are completed and
I will simply have him forward my set to the winner of this auction.
For those of you who are new to the list, this set consists of
approximately 201 elongated pennies currently available at WDW. Several
of us from the list contracted with Big Al Ramsey to get these sets for
us. We paid, I believe $155 and supplied our own coins, so they'll all
be on coppers.
Bidding will start at $150 and bids will not be reduced. PLEASE
SEND BIDS VIA PRIVATE E-MAIL!! I will send the updated high bid o the
list (and any digest members who express an interest) each time I log-on
(roughly every day or so). The auction will run about a week or until I
do not receive any more bids in a reasonable period (at least 24hrs).

What information do you want...it is the same design as the pennies that
are available with Sorcer Mickey on them (available at a Resort or two at

Walt Disney World reports the first penny pressers on their property in
1995.

Hey Bert,
My roommate has some friends that went to Maine and they brought me back 7
different ec's from their trip. I'm sure one was that Rockport, Maine
penny you mentioned. I will check. Unfortunately, since I don't even know
these friends and didn't know if they were actually going to get me coins.
I don't have any info on locations and I sure they didn't even pay
attention. They don't collect, but I understand they had a great time
getting these coins for me. It became an obsession, a mission and they
ended up spending a whole day looking for machines!
