Are the Ghosts Er Ah...
"Hitchhiking" from Coin to Coin!?
The Haunted Mansion attraction is very popular as are the Haunted Mansion themed pressed quarters. Not surprisingly, The Original Disneyland Resort, Anaheim is the home of The Original Haunted Mansion Attraction as well as... The Original Haunted Mansion Pressed Coins! These inexpensive treasures make wonderful collectibles for both "HM" and Pressed Coin fans. But, as you can see, the Haunted Mansion Elongated Coins Collection is BIG! (Even if we do not include the Haunted Mansion Holiday, "HMH" overlay Nightmare Before Christmas Elongated Coins.)
Where to start? Glad you asked! :-) This page describes a fun collection of only nine pressed quarters, a great place to start. They are really only three different obverse and reverse dies. But, the ghosts have "hitchhiked" from one coin to the next, as the ghosts do from Doom Buggy to Doom Buggy on the ride. So over about a half-dozen years or so nine different coin combinations were created. Side note: We believe this set may have been inspired by an inadvertent rotation of the DL0341-343 Haunted Mansion pressed quarter set back in 2007.
These souvenirs are special. The coin images were made via old school hand engraving by Eurolink's very talented Jimmy Vargas. It's the kind of engraving that put Disney pressed coins on the map. But, even more amazing are the "stampbacks" or reverses. As many Advanced Disney Pressed Coin Collectors and Disney Fans know, Disneyland Resort, Anaheim was not only the first Disney park in the world to have pressed coin machines way back in 1987, but in 2004, they also became the first Disney Resort in the world to offer pressed coins with stampbacks. And these stampbacks are special. The Gus Gracey, Phineas Queeg, and Ezra Dobbins Haunted Mansion ghost stampbacks are "high-relief" or "3D" fully engraved images, the first and only ones at any Disney Resort known as of 2018. Are they cool or what? Another fun collection! :-)
Ready to start your Disneyana Jones quest for this fun set of HM pressed coins? By "Watching out for the hitchhiking ghosts" you can unearth the full congress of nine ghost coins, where others may see only a trio... Here's some background... All nine souvenirs were issued in the New Orleans Square area of Disneyland Park, Anaheim via the very spooky Nightmare Before Christmas / Haunted Mansion coffin themed coin press. The first three smashed 25 cent pieces in this set, the DL0518, DL0519, and DL0520 started their haunt in January and passed on in July of 2012, the second three souvenirs, the DL0525, DL0526, and DL0527 were onstage by July and parted around late October of 2012, and the last three tiny bits of precious, irresistible Disneyland apparitional art began their Curios and Curiosities Shop internment in Mid-January of 2018. With the guide below, you have all the evidences needed to date and attribute each of these unique elongates based on the obverse / reverse combination. So, if you've been collecting them all along, you're done already! :-) But... if you are just now discovering the fun of collecting Disney pressed coins, don't delay in starting your own Disneyana Jones quest. It can be a wonderful way to have a fun day at the Disneyland Resort, a chance to make new friends with fellow elongated coin collectors, plus an opportunity to build a wonderful collection of memories... and pressed coins! :-) Happy Collecting, Boomer.
