Editor's note: We are often reminded that the preferred numismatic term is "Elongated Coins". However, as the rebellious, risk taking, devil may care ParkPennies.com contributors that we are, temptation often gets the better of us. As a result, you may see the more casual, fun terms like: pressed, flattened, crushed, squashed, rolled, mashed, smashed, stamped, squished, smushed, stretched, memory, keepsake, and souvenir to describe these fun penny souvenirs. |

Based on ParkPennies research, we believe the WDW elongated coin necklace or key chain pressed coin sets above are two of the earliest WDW elongated coins or pressed pennies known. The chains feature elongated WDW Disney pressed coins much like the vintage Walt Disney World pressed coins that were machine vended on-stage. However, they are from slightly different dies that we believe were used only to make these good luck coins on chains. (One of the several small differences between the vintage on-stage coins vs. good luck chained elongated coins is that the on-stage coins featured thin grippers vs. the good luck chained coins’ thicker grippers.) The two designs shown, Mickey Mouse rays and Mickey Mouse standing, are among the first eight (plus variations) WDW elongated coin designs known.
The die rolls were made for Marvin Huth circa 1991 and we believe the first two machines were "four play" machines and were placed on-stage at Walt Disney World circa 1991 - 1992. (Walt Disney World has published 1994 as the first year. Our date is based on records kept by the engraver of the dies. We have searched for and would welcome any additional evidence.) One machine offered Walt Disney World titled coins with images of: Mickey Mouse rays, Mickey Mouse standing, Minnie Mouse and Chip N Dale. The second machine featured Walt Disney World Typhoon Lagoon titled coins with images of: Shark submarine, Ship Tillie on the mountain peak, Snorkeling Mickey Mouse and Surfing Mickey Mouse on an inner tube.
Walt Disney World pressed pennies or elongated coins as many purists call them, are great collectibles. Here are some WDW files and some great WDW links. (Disneyland USA, Disneyland Tokyo, Disneyland Paris, and Disneyland Hong Kong, please visit our main page.)
