"Pressed Penny" Medals

The TDR Tokyo Disneyland Resort Pressed Penny Guide includes only coins that were issued on Tokyo Disneyland Resort Property and not inside the gates of any park, such as Tokyo Disneyland or Tokyo DisneySea in Japan. Most coins are from the resort hotels, although, more and more are coming from resort transportation centers. As described in the Tokyo Disneyland Resorts collection outline, and the graphical pressed penny collections page, and the overview thumbnail images, this collection is a challenge, but, a fun one.

The Ambassador Hotel was the first location of a hotel or "resort" penny press, and at first machines were not added often nor were the medals changed often. As you can see by viewing the pages of this guide, both the number of machines and the frequency of new medal introductions have grown rapidly. At times, it is very difficult for us to keep up with the new issues. Note: Advanced collectors will remember that Ambassador Hotel was also the subject of the first, and so far only known, Tokyo Disneyland Prototype coins.

Although these Tokyo Disneyland Resort medal souvenirs are often referred to as "pressed pennies", "pressed nickels" and even "elongated coins" by some collectors, no coins were injured in their production. Tokyo Disneyland Resort Souvenir Medals are made by pressing vended planchets, flans, disks, blanks or slugs. The blank medal planchets, which are held inside the penny press, and then pressed to order for the collector. Other common names for these souvenirs are flattened, crushed, squashed, rolled, mashed, smashed, stamped, squished, smushed, stretched, memory, and keepsake.

The metal disks used to make these elongated souvenirs are about the size of a US nickel or Euro five-cent piece. To date, only two kinds of blanks have been used in the park. (Although non-native planchet examples are known and often prized by advanced collectors, they are not currently listed in these guides.) One standard type planchet or blank is made of solid, bare copper and the other standard type is also solid copper with a chrome or nickle plating. In Japan, some collectors call them by the names of "penny" and "nickel" because of their color, maybe also because of the nostalgia of pressed coins. But, not because coins were actually pressed.
