The First Known Prototype Disney Pressed Coin
The DN0001, Mickey Rays

The Disneyland elongated coin prototype or neverland pressed penny collection reference guide lists many of the scarcest Disneyland elongated coins or dies known. Generally the elongated coins in this group are known by advanced collectors as just "prototypes". However, the term is used very loosely here and also includes most any elongated coin that, for one reason or another, was never "onstage" or available to the public. Needless to say, some of these coins were rumors or even legends before we were ever able to secure a scan for verification. Some still are.

Guide numbering is not yet definitive. To bring this very challenging group of prototype elongated coins into conformity with our other guides, we hope to reorganize it in chronological order, once it is stable. Until then, guide numbers are provisional. New numbers may be added between existing numbers with a . (dot) extension to maintain chronological order and avoid the inconvenience of reordering collection pages if/when permanent numbers can be assigned.

Rumored coins are reported to us anony-mousely now and then and we very much appreciate the reports. However, we need to have a good scan or see the actual coin, attribute appropriate provenance, and in some cases permission of the image / coin owner, before the coins can be verified and fully listed in the guides. So, if you emailed us an anony-mouse report, and the coin currently has "rumored" status, it's nothing personal. We agree the coin is probably out there somewhere, it's just that need a bit more information to fully list it.
Needless to say, reports and scans from fellow collectors help build and improve the breath and depth of this reference resource for us all. If you own or are considering the acquisition of an unlisted coin believed to be a "DN" coin, please contact us to request the coin's reserved guide number, a courtesy guide listing, or our opinion of provenance. Our thanks to collectors who have shared additions, corrections, and comments with ParkPennies.com as we have shared this guide.

Reserved numbers
are sometimes held for coins reported or rumored but not yet confirmed or listed or are held as chronological place holders for coins that may be reported or discovered in the future.

Off-denomination pressed coins
are often scarce and usually very much sought after. However, because "coin" listings are really listings of the dies that were used to press the coins, off-denomination coin variations such as nickel, dime, quarter, arcade token, etc. are only listed as prototypes if they were pressed on a prototype die. Most of the known off-denomination variations of Disney pressed coins, are not currently listed. However, we hope to add them to our collection guides in the future. Collectors needing guide numbers for such coins today, need only add a suffix of N, D, Q etc. to the standard guide number, e.g. DN0019P for their cataloging purposes. And of course, if possible, please do send a scan of any denominational variations not already listed for inclusion in future guide updates.

References to estimates of coins known to be in the hands of collectors are based on coins known by ParkPennies.com to have been sold, traded, seen or reported by trusted sources. Readers are advised that not all coins are held by "known collectors". Also, some coins may be counted twice as they pass through the hands of different collectors and previously unreported caches of coins can surface. Die status, that is, whether or not the die is still "open" or able to press more coins, is always uncertain, until the die is known to have been canceled.

Please excuse our informality. Although we are (repeatedly) told the preferred numismatic term is "Elongated Coins!", some rebellious, devil-may-care ParkPennies.com contributors are known to use more casual, fun terms like: pressed pennies, flattened pennies, crushed pennies, squashed pennies, rolled pennies, mashed pennies, smashed pennies, stamped pennies, squished pennies, smushed pennies, stretched pennies, memory pennies, keepsake pennies, flat pennies, and souvenir to describe these fun penny (cent) novelties.

Some poor quality scans collected over the years from eBay auctions etc. have been used. We were unable to determine the image owner of one or two images. We hope the coin owners will contact us so we may give them proper credit and hopefully, obtain a better picture to share with you.

DN0001 Horizontal prototype elongated penny image. DISNEYLAND ® , Classic outlined image of Mickey’s face "hollow outlined ears" with rays, © DISNEY dot border grip on right side. Earliest known Disney elongated coin type made. (Centek prototype.) This coin very similar in design to DL0001, DL0005, DL0007, and DL0019. Circa late 1985 to early 1986. No backstamp.

This Disney coin was pressed from a prototype die designed for use in a machine type that preceded the first installed Disneyland penny presses. Examples are known in only a few collections as of 2007. Die status is reported as open. Extremely scarce as of 2008.

MICKEY MOUSE , Mickey Mouse in a 1890’s style suit, standing, full length, full face, head cocked to one side, tipping his straw hat with his left hand, dot border, DISNEYLAND ® , © 1986 THE WALT DISNEY CO. Per the machine owner, this die was made in November of 1986. No backstamp.

This Disney coin is often called the "Straw Hat Mickey" or "Nifty Nineties Mickey". Mickey Mouse is in 1890’s summer clothing, as in the 1941 Disney short, The Nifty Nineties. Interviews by Robert Hoff with key people close to this prototype, suggest that Vance Fowler of The Cimeter Group planned to have this coin / machine proposed to Disney. The artwork is well executed and done in high relief. (For examples featuring the dates 1928 to the left of Mickey and 1988 to right, please refer to DN0003.) Reported held by only a few collectors as of 2007. Die status has been reported as open by two trusted sources.

This Disney coin is often called the "Dated Straw Hat Mickey" or "Dated Nifty Nineties Mickey". Mickey Mouse is in 1890’s summer clothing, as in the 1941 Disney short, The Nifty Nineties. Interviews by Robert Hoff with key people close to this prototype suggest that Vance Fowler of The Cimeter Group proposed this coin / machine to Disneyland Management. However, negotiations broke down and the machine was never placed onstage. The artwork is well executed and done in high relief. (For examples without the dates 1928 to the left of Mickey and 1988 to right, please refer to DN0002.) Die status was reported to Robert Hoff in 2000, by a trusted source, as lost and later confirmed in 2005 as lost by the original owner / engraver.

In addition to the length of the gripper slot, there are other differences between this coin and the three dot version, the DL0003. No evidence has been found that this coin was ever on-stage. In 2008, denominational variations of this coin were sold via internet auction. There are very few known examples of the DN0004.

Many small differences make this a hard coin to spot. Key is the double outlined guitar which is mostly solid on the DL0006 and the heavy point of the "D" in Disneyland. Due to the few known examples of DN0005 and the lack of any on stage documentation, we believe this very scarce coin was never on-stage. Die status is unknown.

DN0006 Horizontal prototype elongated penny image. Mickey Mouse with pistol; flat ears, outlined hat and lettering, FRONTIER LAND © DISNEY Disneyland ® 3 dot gripper slot, dot border. Very similar to the DL0010. No backstamp.

On both DN0006 and DL0010 Mickey’s hat is outlined and completely open at the top. On DN0006 Mickey’s right ear is slightly outlined, grip arcs over 3 dots, curl on top of "Frontier" does not touch a dot. Border dots are smaller than on DL0010 and second dot from the right is out of alignment with the other border dots. (On DL0010 Mickey’s right ear is totally flat, grip arcs over 5 dots, curl on top of "Frontier" touches a dot, border dots are larger than on DN0006 and second dot from the right is in alignment with the other border dots.) Due to the scarcity of the DN0006 and lack of any on-stage documentation, we believe this coin was never on-stage. Die status unknown.

NO "e". Our current guess is circa early 1990's. No backstamp.

Cluttered artwork has been suggested as the reason this coin was never on-stage. Still it is one of my favorites. Very scarce in early years, around the turn of the century, several different denominational variations were reported, still hard to find. Die status is unknown.

Three of the nine Snow White themed coins are known to have at first, lacked a " © DISNEY". No evidence has been found to support an on-stage appearance of this set. Anecdotal evidence leads to the conclusion that test rolls were made at the park. Possibly the lack of " © DISNEY" was noted and the dies returned to Eurolink to be corrected. Hard to find coins. Interviews with Cast Members and related research by Robert Hoff support the conclusion that these dies were engraved as penny-size in error. When used in the Disneyland nickel machine, the small penny sized die images left an unacceptable blank space at the end of the rolled coin. Corrected dies were ordered before the machine was placed on-stage. Per the best information available to us in 2009, less than a dozen "penny art" sets are believed to be in the hands of collectors. Reports of incomplete sets have been made and we do not believe an equal number of each coin in this three coin set were pressed. Examples also are known to exist on non-native or off-denomination(?) coins such as cents. Die status is unknown.

ParkPennies.com interviews with Cast Members closely involved at the time, lead to the conclusion that the die was in the Park, however, never on-stage. The few known examples of this coin, the lack of on-stage documentation, as well as known test and miss-roll coins support their recollections. Die status unknown.

Side by side comparison of the scarce DN0024 and common DL00153. As you can see there are many small details that separate these two coin types. Easiest to for me to identify is the banner at the bottom of the design that breaks through the beaded border on the Disneyland DL variety and stops short of the border on the prototype DN variety. For similar coins with the inscription "MARK TWAIN RIVERBOAT" please see the on-stage DL0249.

Based on early coin examples, the penny press machine placed on-stage outside Bonanza Outfitters on 7/16/04, vended the DL0249 coin as the button "C" selection from the very start. However, the machine's marquee originally displayed this "DN0034 image" and only later a "DL0249 image" as the button "C" selection.
So what became of the original coin? According to trusted sources, a die which matched the original DN0034 marquee artwork, was proposed and rejected. Given the original machine marquee was made using the DN0034 artwork, we are told and agree that DN0034 coins must have been pressed as proofs / marquee samples etc. even though the die was later replaced.
Therefore, we have reserved elongated coin collection guide number DN0034 for any coins representing this early prototype die. In keeping with the Disney tradition of providing a better quality souvenir, in 2004, Disneyland was the first Disney park to introduce backstamps. The DL0251 was the first on-stage die to be matched to a backstamp. This particular DL0251 appears to be evidence of early "back die" experiments with its unusual DL0251DNR Disneyland Neverland reverse.

In keeping with the Disney tradition of providing a better quality souvenir, in 2004, Disneyland introduced the DL0251 back stamped nickel. With this introduction, Disneyland became the first Disney Park to ever offer two sided elongated coins, also known as "Mules". This coin appears to be evidence of early experiments with varied "back dies", "back shafts" or "backstamp" engravings with its DL0251DNR reverse.

Editor's note: We are often reminded that the preferred numismatic term is "Elongated Coins". However, as the rebellious, risk taking, devil may care ParkPennies.com contributors that we are, temptation often gets the better of us. As a result, you may see the more casual, fun terms like: pressed pennies, flattened pennies, crushed pennies, squashed pennies, rolled pennies, mashed pennies, smashed pennies, stamped pennies, squished pennies, smushed pennies, stretched pennies, memory pennies, keepsake pennies, flat pennies, and souvenir medallions to describe these fun penny souvenirs.
