This Disney coin
was pressed from a prototype die designed for use in a machine type that
preceded the first installed Disneyland penny presses. Per the best information available to us at the time of this report: Examples
are known in only a few collections as of 2007. Die status is reported as open.
Still extremely scarce as of 2008. Related: Our scarce or rare Disneyland pressed pennies and elongated coins page. |

This Disney coin
is often called the "Straw Hat Mickey" or "Nifty Nineties Mickey".
Mickey Mouse is in 1890’s summer clothing, as in the 1941 Disney short, The Nifty Nineties. Interviews by Robert Hoff of key people close to this prototype
suggest that Vance Fowler planned to have this coin / machine proposed to Disney. The artwork is well executed and done in high relief. (For examples featuring the dates 1928 to the left of Mickey and 1988 to right, please refer to DN0003.) Reported held by only a few collectors as of 2007. Die status has been reported as open by two trusted sources.

This Disney coin
is often called the "Dated Straw Hat Mickey" or "Dated Nifty Nineties Mickey".
Mickey Mouse is in 1890’s summer clothing, as in the 1941 Disney short, The Nifty Nineties. Interviews by Robert Hoff of key people close to this prototype
suggest that Vance Fowler proposed this coin / machine to Disneyland Management. However, negotiations broke down and the machine was never placed onstage. The artwork is well executed and done in high relief. (For examples without the dates 1928 to the left of Mickey and 1988 to right, please refer to DN0002.) Die status was reported to Robert Hoff in 2000, by a trusted source, as lost and later confirmed in 2005 as lost by the original owner / engraver. |

In addition to the length of the gripper slot, which could be the result of "cleaning", there are other differences between this coin and the three dot version, the DL0003 No evidence has been found that this coin was ever
on-stage.
In 2008, denominational variations of this coin were sold via internet auction. There are very few known examples of the DN0004. Die status is still unknown. |

Many
small differences make this a hard coin to spot. Key is the double outlined guitar which is mostly solid on the DL0006. Due to
the few known examples of DN0005 and the lack of on
stage documentation, we believe this very scarce coin was never on-stage. Die status is unknown. |

On both DN0006 and DL0010 Mickey’s hat is outlined and completely open at the top. On DN0006 Mickey’s right ear is slightly outlined, grip arcs over 3 dots, curl on top of "Frontier" does not touch a dot. Border dots are smaller than on
DL0010 and second dot from the right is out of alignment with the other
border dots. (On DL0010 Mickey’s right ear is totally flat, grip arcs over 5 dots, curl on top of "Frontier" touches a dot, border dots are larger than on DN0006 and second dot from the right is in alignment with the other border dots.) Due to the scarcity of
the DN0006 and lack of any on-stage documentation, we believed
this coin was never on-stage.

Cluttered artwork has been suggested as the reason this coin was never on-stage. Very scarce in early years, currently several denominational variations are known, still hard to find. Die status is unknown. |

Never-Neverland coins. Fantasmic! premiered (soft opening) in the Fall of 1991. Official start date of the show was Spring (March) 1992. Note that this coin has Disneyland © rather than the usual ©DISNEY. Cast Member interviews by R. Hoff and other strong evidence support the opinion that this coin was offered from a single die machine and never on-stage. Three of the nine Snow White themed coins lack "©DISNEY". No evidence has been found
to support an on-stage appearance of this set. Anecdotal evidence leads to the
conclusion that test rolls were made at the park. Possibly the lack of "©DISNEY" was noted and the dies
returned to Eurolink to be corrected. Hard to find coins. Die status unknown. |

Interviews with Cast Members and related research by R. Hoff support the
conclusion that these dies were engraved as penny-size in error. However, they were meant for use in the
Disneyland nickel machine.
The small penny sized die images left a reportedly unacceptable blank space
at the end of the rolled coin. Corrected dies were ordered before the
machine was placed on-stage.
Per the best information available to us in 2009, less than a dozen "penny art" sets are believed to be in the hands of collectors. Reports of incomplete sets have been made and we do not believe an equal number of each coin in this three coin set were pressed. Examples also are known
to exist on non-native or off-denomination coins such as cents.
Die status is unknown. Related: Our scarce or rare Disneyland pressed pennies and elongated coins page. |

The 1996 New Year date is in error. The coin should have read 1997. Well, it was 1996 and it was New Years.
It can happen. ParkPennies.com interviews with Cast Members closely involved at the time, lead to the conclusion that the die was in the Park, however, it was never on-stage. The few known examples of this coin, the lack of on-stage documentation, as well as known test and miss-roll coins support collector and Cast Member recollections. Die status unknown. |

In
keeping with the Disney tradition of providing a better quality souvenir,
in 2004, Disneyland was the first Disney park to introduce backstamps. The DL0251 was the first on-stage die to be matched to a backstamp. This particular DL0251
appears to be evidence of early "back
die" experiments with its unusual DL0251DNR Disneyland Neverland reverse. |

In keeping with the Disney tradition of providing a better quality souvenir, in 2004, Disneyland introduced the DL0251 backstamped nickel. With this introduction, Disneyland became the first Disney Park to ever offer two sided elongated coins, also known as "Mules". This coin appears to be evidence of early experiments with varied "back dies", "back shafts" or "backstamp" engravings with its DL0251DNR reverse. |
