Scarce Disneyland prototype pressed coins are, in my opinion, the most challenging and most fun elongated coins to collect in the world of Disney pressed coins. They offer both cool bits of Disney trivia and interesting behind the scenes history. Not to mention they include some of the most valuable Disney elongated coins on Earth. Recap: Cool History + Small Number + Hard To Find = FUN! :-)

There are good reasons why there is an ever growing interest in Disneyland "Prototype" pressed coins and why they have held super-star status for so long. Matter of fact, as many Advanced Collectors of Disneyana elongated coins will attest, Disney prototype pressed coins seem to be getting both more popular and scarcer day by day. All in spite of the fact that they're often not just hard to find, but, hard to even find out about. Needless to say, few of these unusual collectable are ever seen (other than here :-). But, if you starting a collection, our advice is don't be discouraged or impatient. Boomer of ParkPennies acquired one of the coins shown in this guide on eBay for less than $5.00! Okay, that's just once in 30 years, but, it can happen. :-) And over the past 20+ years, we have seen some prototype coins at Disneyana shows from time to time. But, best of all is trading coins with a fellow collector; it can be a fun way to help compete two collections. :-)

Do you have an unidentifiable Disneyland elongated coin that you'd like us to attribute? It's a sneaky way we add coins to this guide.... er, ah, <smile> I mean to say... We greatly appreciate the help from many fellow collectors, Disneyana show exhibitors, and other hobby associated sources that have shared their knowledge, coins, and images with us for use in this guide over the past 30 years or so. (Yes, Boomer really is old. :-) We also are very happy to share our knowledge with ParkPennies visitors by way of this web site and via email we hope you will visit often and please don't be shy about contacting us if you have a question or comment. Happy Collecting,

The DN0001 Mickey Rays - Mickey Sunburst. The First Disney pressed coin design DN0001 Mickey Rays / Mickey Sunburst The First Disney elongated coin design. Horizontal pressed penny image. DISNEYLAND ® , Classic outlined image of Mickey’s face "hollow outlined ears" with rays, © DISNEY dot border grip on right side. Earliest known Disney elongated coin type ever made. (Centek prototype.) This coin very similar in design to DL0001, DL0005, DL0007, and DL0019. Circa late 1985 to early 1986. No backstamped examples known. (No Disney elongated coins pressed before 2004 are known to have backstamps.) This Disney coin was pressed from a prototype die designed for use in a machine type that preceded the first installed Disneyland penny presses, the Centek single play machines. Examples are known in only a few collections as of 2007. Die status is reported as open. Extremely scarce as of 2015. (This pressed coin made with The #DNP0001.0.0 obverse elongated coin die in its original "0" state / variation, paired with a blank "0" reverse coin die.) The legendary DN0002 Nifty Nineties Mickey - Straw Hat MickeyDN0002 Nifty Nineties Mickey / Straw Hat Mickey Pressed Coin. Vertical pressed coin image. MICKEY MOUSE , Mickey Mouse in a 1890’s style suit, standing, full length, full face, head cocked to one side, tipping his straw hat with his left hand, dot border, DISNEYLAND ® , © 1986 THE WALT DISNEY CO. Per the machine owner, this die was made in November of 1986.No backstamped examples known. (No Disney elongated coins pressed before 2004 are known to have backstamps.) This Disney coin is often called the "Straw Hat Mickey" or "Nifty Nineties Mickey". Mickey Mouse is in 1890’s summer clothing, as in the 1941 Disney short, The Nifty Nineties. Interviews by Robert Hoff of ParkPennies.com with key people close to this prototype, suggest that Vance Fowler of The Cimeter Group hoped that an agreement covering this coin in a Cimeter machine would be received and accepted by Disneyland. David P., a relative and business partner eventually presented the DN0003. The DN0002 / DN0003 artwork is well executed in high relief. (For examples featuring the dates 1928 to the left of Mickey and 1988 to right, please refer to DN0003.) Examples pressed circa 1986-7 on both copper and zinc cents are known to exist and most likely number less than 10 in total. Die status has been reported as open by two trusted sources. Extremely scarce as of this 2015 update. Reported as held by only a few advanced collectors as of 2015. (This pressed coin made with The #DNP0002.0.0 obverse elongated coin die in its original "0" state / variation, paired with a blank "0" reverse coin die.) DN0003 Dated Nifty Nineties Mickey - Straw hat Mickey prototype pressed coin.DN0003 Dated Nifty Nineties Mickey / Straw hat Mickey Pressed Coin. Vertical pressed penny image. MICKEY MOUSE , 1928 Mickey Mouse in a 1890’s style suit, standing, full length, full face, head cocked to one side, tipping his straw hat with his left hand, 1988, DISNEYLAND ®, dot border, © 1988 THE WALT DISNEY CO. For examples without the dates 1928 to the left of Mickey and 1988 to the right, please refer to the DN0002. This die was engraved between 1987 and 1989. No backstamped examples known. (No Disney elongated coins pressed before 2004 are known to have backstamps.) Image courtesy of the N. Wooten collection. This Disney coin is often called the "Dated Straw Hat Mickey" or "Dated Nifty Nineties Mickey". Mickey Mouse is in 1890’s summer clothing, as in the 1941 Disney short, The Nifty Nineties. Interviews by Robert Hoff of ParkPennies.com with key people close to this prototype suggest that Vance Fowler of The Cimeter Group proposed this coin / machine to Disneyland Management via a California based relative working with him. However, negotiations broke down and the machine was never placed onstage. The artwork is well executed and done in high relief. (For examples without the dates 1928 to the left of Mickey and 1988 to right, please refer to DN0002.) In 2000, die status was reported to Robert Hoff of ParkPennies by a trusted knowledgeable source as lost / destroyed. Again in 2005 and 2012, this die was confirmed as lost / destroyed by the original owner / engraver. Known examples of this coin are scarce. In 2006, a picture of the left and right marquees from the original machine, each featuring a DN0003 was made public. A few additional examples are known. Extremely scarce. Possibly six examples known as of this update in 2015. Double band MICKEY 60 YEARS prototype pressed coin.DN0004 Double Band MICKEY 60 YEARS prototype pressed penny. Horizontal penny image. MICKEY 60 YEARS, lines above and below 60 Years, ("Double Band") Mickey Mouse standing, DISNEYLAND, grip arcs over 5 dots in the dot border. Very similar to the DL0003. Believed to date back to 1988. No backstamped examples known. (No Disney elongated coins pressed before 2004 are known to have backstamps.) In addition to the length of the gripper slot, there are other differences between this coin and the three dot version, the DL0003. No evidence has been found that this coin was ever on-stage. In 2008, denominational variations of this coin were sold via an internet auction. However, in total, there are few collections known to have examples of the DN0004 as of 2015. (This pressed coin made with The #DNP0004.0.0 obverse elongated coin die in its original "0" state / variation, paired with a blank "0" reverse coin die.) DN0005 Small Bear Country prototype pressed pennyDN0005 Small Bear Country prototype pressed penny. Horizontal pressed penny image. DISNEYLAND ® with heavy "D", BEAR COUNTRY, small bear holding double outlined guitar, © DISNEY, dot border, clean sharp grip slot. Similar to the DL0002, DL0006. Circa 1989. No backstamped examples known. (No Disney elongated coins pressed before2004 are known to have backstamps.) Many small differences make this a hard coin to spot. Key is the double outlined guitar which is mostly solid on the DL0006 and the heavy point of the "D" in Disneyland. Due to the few known examples of DN0005 and the lack of any on stage documentation, we believe this very scarce coin was never on-stage. Die status is unknown. (This pressed coin made with The #DNP0005.0.0 obverse elongated coin die in its original "0" state / variation, paired with a blank "0" reverse coin die.) DN0006 Frontier Land Mickey prototype pressed pennyDN0006 Frontier Land Mickey Prototype Pressed Penny. Horizontal pressed penny image. Mickey Mouse with pistol; flat ears, outlined hat and lettering, FRONTIER LAND © DISNEY Disneyland ® 3 dot gripper slot, dot border. Very similar to the DL0010. No backstamped examples known. (No Disney elongated coins pressed before 2004 are known to have backstamps.)
On both DN0006 and DL0010 Mickey’s hat is outlined and completely open at the top. On DN0006 Mickey’s right ear is slightly outlined, grip arcs over 3 dots, curl on top of "Frontier" does not touch a dot. Border dots are smaller than on DL0010 and second dot from the right is out of alignment with the other border dots. (On DL0010 Mickey’s right ear is totally flat, grip arcs over 5 dots, curl on top of "Frontier" touches a dot, border dots are larger than on DN0006 and second dot from the right is in alignment with the other border dots.) Due to the scarcity of the DN0006 and lack of any on-stage documentation, we believe this coin was never on-stage. Die status unknown. NO "e". Our current guess is circa early 1990's. Not closely similar to any other elongated coin, prototype or onstage. No backstamped examples known. (No Disney elongated coins pressed before 2004 are known to have backstamps.) Cluttered artwork has been suggested as the reason this coin was never on-stage. Still it is one of my favorites. Very scarce in early years, around the turn of the century, several different denominational variations have been reported. However, still hard to find in 2015. Die status is unknown. Toontown trolley also known as the Jolly Trolley, Conductor Mickey, MICKEY'S TOONTOWN, Disneyland®, ©DISNEY, dot border, no "e" for Eurolink. Not closely similar to any other elongated coin, prototype or onstage. As told to Robert Hoff of ParkPennies.com by a long time Electro Mechanical Shop Cast Member now retired, a penny press machine was planned for placement in Toontown. However a simple design developed into a very nice, but, over budget animated penny press design and was abandoned. This penny design dates from that period of time. Some years later, a conventional design three play dime press machine was placed in ToonTown, the first Disney pressed dime machine in history. Noticed for sale via an eBay auction on 10/5/08 by well known collector, Dee D. Examples are known to exist on nickels, dimes and quarters. The die may date back to the early 1990's. Stars arc over an outlined Sorcerer Mickey Mouse standing arms outstretched in lower right, Disneyland © , Enchanted Brooms from Fantasia dancing (appear to be flames) from left to right above a wire border. Circa early 1990's. Surely one of the most coveted Disneyland elongated coin prototypes. Not closely similar to any other elongated coin, prototype or onstage. No backstamped examples known. (No Disney elongated coins pressed before 2004 are known to have backstamps.) Probably one of the most famous and sought after Never-Neverland coins. Fantasmic! premiered (soft opening) in the Fall of 1991. Official start date of the show was Spring (March) 1992. Note that this coin has Disneyland © rather than the usual © DISNEY. Cast Member interviews by Robert Hoff of ParkPennies.com and other strong evidence support the opinion that this coin was offered from a single die machine and never on-stage. Per the best information available to us at the time of this report: Some non-native coin examples have been reported. Not closely similar to any other elongated coin, prototype or onstage. The outside line around the coin, just outside the dot border, often called a ring or band makes this an unusual coin. Bands are sometimes seen on Disneyland coins as are dot borders. Picture of Disneyland Pressed penny or pennies, elongated coinsDisneyland "Penny Art" pressed nickels, an interesting, but, hard to find set. Interviews with Cast Members and related research by Robert Hoff of ParkPennies.com support the long held belief that these "Penny Art" dies were engraved as "penny-sized" coin dies in error. A Cast Member that was close to this project at the time, in the mid 1990's, stated that when these dies arrived they were tested in a machine set up for the first time to "intensionally" press nickels. :-) However, the smaller than expected penny-sized die images left an unacceptable blank space at the end of the rolled coin. So, corrected, dies with larger images were ordered before the machine was placed on-stage. The machine when placed onstage became the first Disney coin press in world to press nickels.
Per the best information available to us to date in 2015, less than a dozen "penny art" sets are believed to be in the hands of collectors. Reports of incomplete sets have been made and we do not believe an equal number of each coin in this set of three pressed nickels were made. Examples are also known to exist on non-native or off-denomination coins such as cents. Die status is unknown. Related: Our scarce or rare Disneyland pressed pennies and elongated coins page.

The Union Bank of California pressed penny prototype set of coins were all pressed on a single four image die shaft. Each has a train image that is difficult to recognize. It did not even come close to meeting the high standards of the penny press company that was commissioned to engrave the dies and manufacture the machine. So, replacement dies DL0153-DL0156 were engraved which reduced the focal image to just the locomotive and tender while increasing the image size. The original ring die of four images, used to press the prototype set, was reported and later confirmed destroyed by the engraver / owner as well as a trusted source. The finished hand crank penny press machine, with the new, corrected dies held a place of honor in the UBOC Bank, Main Street, Disneyland for about two years where UBOC pennies could be pressed for free(!) comparison of the prototype and onstage UBOC pressed coins.LEFT: Side by side comparison of the scarce DN0024 and common DL00153. (Click the thumbnail for a larger image.) As you can see there are many small details that separate these two coin types. Easiest to for me to identify is the banner at the bottom of the design that breaks through the beaded border on the Disneyland DL variety and stops short of the border on the prototype DN variety. All UBOC elongated pennies have no examples with backstamps are known.

DISNEYLAND ® image of a stern wheeler steamboat reminiscent of Disneyland's Mark Twain Riverboat, © DISNEY. NO inscription below the ship, no border, no examples with backstamps are known. For similar coins with the inscription "MARK TWAINRIVERBOAT" please see the on-stage DL0249. Based on early coin examples, the penny press machine placed on-stage outside Bonanza Outfitters on 7/16/04, vended the DL0249 coin as the button "C" selection from the very start. However, the machine's marquee originally displayed this "DN0034 image" and only later a "DL0249 image" as the button "C" selection. So what became of the original coin? According to trusted sources, a die which matched the original DN0034 marquee artwork, was proposed and rejected. Given the original machine marquee was made using the DN0034 artwork, we are told and agree that DN0034 coins must have been pressed as proofs / marquee samples etc. even though the die was later replaced. Therefore, we have reserved elongated coin collection guide number DN0034 for any coins representing this early prototype die. And yes, it appears another Indiana Jones style adventure awaits those seeking this coin. Update: In 2010 conformation, via scans of this coin, became available to ParkPennies.com readers.
