The Purest Form of Disneyland Elongated Coins
by Boomer

George Meyer Disney Arcade Shop pressed nickelThis Disneyland Shop, "DS" Pressed Coin Guide includes only pressed coins / tokens made by "The Mouse" not an outside vendor and may represent the purest form of Disneyland souvenir pressed coins ever issued. All the elongated coins listed here are from elongated coin dies engraved on-site at The Original Disneyland Resort, Anaheim, by the Disneyland Arcade Shop Technicians and Disneyland partner krafts. (View our Tribute to Disneyland Arcade Shop / Electro Mechanical Shop Cast Members.) These pressed coins and tokens are usually issued to recognize special Disneyland Resort Cast Members (often retirements) or Special Cast Member Events.

This Disneyland Shop Elongated Coin Guide in some respects, is an exclusive subset of scarce coins that are part of the "CM" Cast Member and Special Events Guide. It is possible and appropriate that once this guide is definitive, complete and chronological, the coins should become part of the CM Guide. Therefore, advanced collectors may wish to include these coins as a key part of their "CM" collections. Any DS coins that meet DN Prototype or TR Test Roll guide criteria are also included as part of those respective guides as well. Collectors should not stress over when this guide will be complete or definitive. "DS" coins are often very, very scarce and equally difficult to discover which can delay listing for several years after issue.

Collectors will notice that Arcade Shop die engraving has greatly evolved from the first, very basic, dot matrix style text stampbacks to excellent park logos. We feel if the direction of "in-house" die engraving continues as it has so far, the Arcade Shop may become the first choice source for future in-park penny press machine dies.

These early exceptional examples of actual Disneyland engraved coins may represent the foundation of all future Disney elongated coins or maybe just it will be only a limited venture. Whatever the future brings, we feel these coins already have a great pedigree and could be key additions to advanced collections.

Note: At the time this article was originally written in 2008, all elongated coin stampbacks or "back" dies in the Disneyland Resort were also engraved on-site by Disneyland Arcade Shop Technicians. In early 2012, a set of back stamps, featuring three dimensional engraving, were placed onstage. We believe these stampbacks were engraved off-site, probably on segmented back dies and used in place of the traditional back roller. Here is an image of a 3-D engraved pressed coin stampback. You may also view the entire first set of pressed quarters featuring 3-D stampbacks.

Note: Although we have striven to keep these entries in a chronological order, given a very limited number of these coins are issued and often to a very limited number of people, reports / discoveries of these treasured coins are often delayed. We need your help! Please share any additional information you have about "DS" guide coins by contacting us anony-mousely if you wish. Pressed Penny Smiley

DS0001 RETIRED 2004 Small ARCADE MECHANICS MERRY CHRISTMAS Shop pressed coin
DS0001 Retired 2004 Small ARCADE MECHANICS MERRY CHRISTMAS engraved by the Disneyland Arcade Shop at The Disneyland Resort. Very faint engraving, ARCADE MECHANICS, Mickey Mouse with hat and scarf winter ware, MERRY CHRISTMAS 2004. (A Mickey ears symbol, ooo, is used as the "00" in 2004.) Last line believed to read "Disneyland". No gripper, no border small image. Early dot matrix style of acid engraving. Believed to be the first elongated obverse die ever engraved "in-house" by Disney. Very similar to the DS0002, except penny sized image. Reverse: Known examples have been blank. This early example shows the dot matrix style of acid etching that was used to engrave the first Disney reverse die for the DL0251 Main Street USA elongated nickel. (The DL0251 single die machine used a back die rather than a back roller.) Reportedly, this coin was informally introduced to Arcade Shop Cast Members during the 2004 Christmas Season, following the first Disney reverse issued in July of 2004. The coin was well received and set the stage for future elongated coins engraved at the Disneyland Resort. Feedback given for this coin was used to improve the following Arcade Shop issued elongated coins and elongated coin stampbacks. (This Disneyland pressed coin number made with the possibly now canceled #DSP0001.0.0 obverse elongated coin die in its original "0" state / variation, paired with a blank "0" reverse coin die.) DS0002 RETIRED 2004 Large ARCADE MECHANICS MERRY CHRISTMAS pressed coin.
DS0002 Retired 2004 Large ARCADE MECHANICS MERRY CHRISTMAS engraved by the Disneyland Arcade Shop at The Disneyland Resort. No gripper, no border large image. Early dot matrix style of acid engraving. Very similar to the DS0001, except quarter sized image. Reverse: Known examples have been blank. This coin *may* have been made within days of the DS0001. Some early coins have been reported to have been pressed on the backs of known onstage coins. Possibly the onstage dies were used to pull these engravings though the press, as they do not have coin grips. (This Disneyland pressed coin number made with the possibly now canceled #DSP0001.0.0 obverse elongated coin die in its original "0" state / variation, paired with a blank "0" reverse coin die.) DS0003 RETIRED RECON ROSIE THE SECRET SQUIRREL pressed coin.
Alexander Rosie, Disneyland HeroDS0003 Retired RECON ROSIE THE SECRET SQUIRREL engraved by the Disneyland Arcade Shop at The Disneyland Resort. ALEXANDER D. ROSIE, RECON ROSIE, THE SECRETSQUIRREL, dot matrix, star border, grip right. Reverse: A nickel example is known to be blank. and a copper and a steel cent example is known to have "DISNEYLAND" repeated four times. This coin is just too cool! Trusted sources told Robert Hoff of ParkPennies.com that this coin was made as a gift to Alex Rosie, Arcade Manager, when leaving Disney after overseeing some major advances in the Arcade Mechanics Craft. Mr. Rosie, a former Marine, was well respected and liked by all that have reported to us about him or this coin. Editor's note: As longtime readers may know, I've been a Disneyland Guest for more than 50 years and have also studied and served time in the business management world. Based on that background, I can say, without reservation, that Mr. Rosie is one of the most impressive members of the Disneyland Management Team that I have met over all these years.
8/31/2021: I'm sorry hear of Mr. Rosie's passing. I will remember him as a well respected and friendly head of the Electro Mechanical Shop at Disneyland. And especially the day he proudly introduced me to his team of technicians at the Main Street Penny Arcade on July 2, 2004. Here is a small bit from his tribute: "Alexander Rosie, SFC (US Army Ret.), age 55, passed away on June 1, 2019. He was born on March 21, 1964 in an American Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany. Alexander proudly served his country for 21 years in the United States Army, earning the prestigious De Fleury Medal and he went on to earn his Master’s Degree in Petroleum Engineering from St. Leo’s University. Alexander was a loving husband, father, step-father, son, and grandfather who will be greatly missed." (This Disneyland pressed coin number made with the possibly now canceled #DSP0003.0.1 obverse elongated coin die in its original "0" state / variation, paired with this coin's "1" or first reverse coin die, Repeating DISNEYLAND.) DS0006 token Magical Milestones prototype give-a-way tokenDS0006 Retired MAGICAL MILESTONES DISNEYLAND 1955-2005 pressed coin image engraved by the Disneyland Arcade Shop at The Disneyland Resort. MAGICAL MILESTONES, shooting star, DISNEYLAND 1955-2005. (Same as the reverse of the coins in the 50th Anniversary set.) no border, grip left. Reverse: Blank. Readers have reported several DS0006 coin denominations. Reportedly, the token sized coin was settled upon as a potential give-a-way for the Disney Vacation Club kiosk in DCA during the 50th Anniversary Celebration. However, even if the rumor was true, for one reason or another, the coin was never offered publicly. These DS0006 RETIRED MAGICAL MILESTONES DISNEYLAND 1955-2005 pressed pennycoins may also have been made as test coins and given as gifts to Cast Members. (Based on ParkPennies.com email.) Note that this die has a coin grip, blank back, and supporting evidence that is was intended as an obverse die. It would otherwise have been listed as a reverse given the image is very similar to the 50th stampbacks. (This Disneyland pressed coin number made with the possibly now canceled #DSP0006.0.0 obverse elongated coin die in its original "0" state / variation, paired with a blank "0" reverse coin die.) Scott & Tracey, Wilson Family Finally 6-5-5
Of special interest.... Retired "Scott & Tracey, Wilson Family Finally 6-5-5" This early Arcade shop engraving features a wedding cake (Married when they met again, 25 years after they were high school sweethearts.) Most were pressed without stampbacks, about three coins featured a Magical Milestones Reverse. Editor's note: We are often reminded that the preferred numismatic term is "Elongated Coins". However, as the rebellious, risk taking, devil may care ParkPennies.com contributors that we are, temptation often gets the better of us. As a result, you may see the more casual, terms like: stamped coins, pressed coins, pressed nickels, pressed dimes, pressed quarters, smashed pennies, flattened pennies, crushed pennies, squashed pennies, rolled pennies, mashed pennies, stamped pennies, smushed pennies, stretched pennies, memory pennies, keepsake pennies, flattened pennies, and souvenir coin medallions to describe these fun pressed coin souvenirs. :-) Here are some pages about the often asked questions of How many pressed coins are at Disney? and How much do pressed coins cost? Just for fun, here is a page with a bit of a different take on Pressed Coins Facts and Fiction with tips on how different coins press, cool pressed coin jewelry, early penny presses... Happy Collecting! Boomer and the folks at ParkPennies.com :-)
