The first Disneyland Seasonal or Christmas1 Pressed Nickel Collection set was offered in 1995. The special holiday or Christmas set of three pressed or elongated nickels was an instant favorite of many Disneyland pressed "penny" collectors. Each year it seems a growing number of Disneyland guests line up to press this fun souvenir. Adding to the fun and the number of people collecting these fun souvenirs, in 2010, Disney California Adventure joined Disneyland with their own set of Seasonal nickels. At times, the nickel press machines can be very busy as people frantically press coins for themselves, friends, and fellow collectors before the machines disappear for the year. Some folks also like to enclose these little treasures in Christmas cards for a list of friends that often are anxiously waiting to add them to their collections. The machine usually arrives in early November and is usually gone by early February. Sometimes late December to early January!
To date, these yearly sets have shared some very popular features. Each coin is usually inscribed with "New Years", "Happy Holidays", or "Season's Greetings", the year of issue, and from 2005 on each coin has also had a very nice backstamp.
As you may have noticed, online auctions that started in the 1990's became a major source of Disneyland pressed coins and introduced the hobby to the world. Soon, the small, mostly local, group of Disney pressed coin collectors became a larger and growing group of enthusiasts from both near and far.
As a result, earlier Disneyland coins have been getting harder and harder to find as new collectors seek to complete their collections. If you are just now starting to collect these coins, 15 years after the first set was issued, you should still be able to find most all the coins needed for a complete onstage collection for sale or trade... in time. Some pressed nickels in this collection have greatly appreciated in value and some may have become hard to find, but all can be found, purchased, or traded for if you are tenacious.
1Although this set is sometimes called "The Christmas Nickels Set", as of 2011 the word "Christmas" has not been inscribed on a single nickel in this collection. If you would like to collect or gift "elongated coins" with a true Christmas greeting spelled out on them, Tokyo Disneyland usually issues several Christmas medals starting around the first week of November.
