What will the future bring?


The end of Disneyland's 50th Anniversary Celebration may have marked an end to the era of "Vintage" Disneyland pressed pennies. The close of the 50th meant the retirement of 51 Magical Milestones pressed pennies from 17 three-play penny presses throughout the Disneyland Resort. Collectors were looking forward to the elongated coins that would replace them. Would it be the old favorites, or new favorites? When the machines returned, many guests felt that Disneyland penny press machines had taken a "new direction".

At first, some said the Disney quality tradition seemed to have been abandoned. Based on the first coins to arrive, gate specific themes, imaginative art, classic dot borders, and high quality hand engraving were no longer "the standard" as they had been before the 50th. The new coins seemed to be of generic art and a lower quality of engraving. A few guests wrote ParkPennies.com with complaints, yes misery loves company. :-) One collector mentioned that he not only didn't like the art work he found in a machine, he found three variations of the artwork he didn't like in that one machine. In fact, some machines offered "The same" generic style of artwork that could be found on coins from Tokyo, China, WDW, and Disneyland no less(!) To his point, you can see in the top row of this guide page, Mickey Mouse sitting, Mickey Mouse reclining, Mickey Mouse standing. All are the same character and style. None have a border. They all say "Disneyland Resort". They could have been pressed inside Disneyland, California Adventure, or a nearby hotel. A conformation of this point of view came from a grade school age park guest. He told ParkPennies "When I was little, [?!] I could make a Mickey, Minnie, Donald... from one machine!". Yes, a (the) grumpy old guy in a Hawaiian shirt (Name withheld, 'cuz many of you know him and / or read his web site. :-) had to chime in and say "I want a souvenir that is DisneyLAND! Disneyland name! Disneyland theme! Disneyland quality!... like before... 'cuz it's DISNEYLAND!". :-)

There is good news. It has been a few years now, and things seem to have headed in the right direction. Many of the more recent coins have offered better themes and artwork. The engraving quality seems to be in check too. In late 2007, we heard that a set of seasonal nickels (DN0050, DN0051, DN0052) possibly other coins as well, were refused by Disneyland and redone. Reportedly because the "CNC machine engraving" wasn't "Disney Quality". Good quality hand-engraved seasonal nickels have followed. Matter of fact, some collectors believe the 2008-2009 seasonal nickels are some of the best ever. Backstamps are now standard on most all new coins and some are so nice that some guests have stand alone backstamp collections. The Nightmare Before Christmas coins have also been nice since the 50th. Things are better.

So, let's not forget, Disneyland Cast Members are penny fans too. Maybe they are even the original pressed penny fans. After all, Disneyland was the first Disney park to have penny presses and pressed nickels, and pressed quarters, and pressed dimes, seasonal nickels, backstamps and... They did it all. So, next time you see a Cast Member in the park, why not tell him how much you appreciate all they have done? You may influence their decisions. They may give you a bit of insider gossip. And you'll make their day, just as they do when we find a new addition for our Disneyland elongated coin collections. smile penny
