This Canceled Elongated Coin Guide is currently small. However, chances are that it will grow. Canceled coins or dies are the focus here. These are not just retired or taken off-stage coins. These coins or dies have not only been taken off-stage, they have been modified, engraved or even mutilated in such a way as to prevent the pressing of any additional "original" coins. Collectors have asked for "retired" Disney dies to be canceled for years, that I know of. However, just recently we have seen evidence that the dies are really being "permanently retired" via cancellation. This is good news for collectors that that made an extra effort to press at the park while they were first on-stage or collectors that had to acquire "retired" coins from another collectors at a premium price. Canceled dies not only made additional coins, like the ones listed here, available, but they also add confidence that the original coins will become more collectible over time. What became of the coin dies not listed? Avid collectors know that thousands of Disney elongated coin dies have been made and taken offstage over the past twenty-plus years. Accordingly, reader emails have made ParkPennies very aware (if there was any doubt before) that a good number of Disneyana collectors have an interest in collecting Disney elongated coin dies, but, rarely find one offered for sale. Based on our research, visitor comments and wildly incoherent speculations, Disney coin dies may have been subject to a variety of fates over past twenty-plus years. Some dies, as advanced collectors are well aware, were auctioned by Disney e.g. Villains dies or sold as event souvenirs. Yet other dies, usually special event dies, were given or awarded to Cast Members. We have also heard from Park visitors that some heavily used dies have failed in their presence via cracks or other use-related damage. A hand full of dies were also reportedly recycled when returned to the manufacturer for modification e.g. the DL0021 Donald Duck elongated coin had " © DISNEY" added and the "new die" became the D0061. Early Cast Member stories have asserted that some dies were even used as lowly paper weights, were scrapped at auction, or just plain old lost. Additionally, some recollections by trusted sources have asserted a belief that in the course of business, some production and / or prototype dies may have been returned to or were held by the die manufacturer. Most recently, we have welcomed anony-mouse visitor reports stating that many retired dies, held by Disneyland, have been appropriately canceled. As time passes and kind readers share their knowledge with us, we are slowly divining the fate of individual retired dies. Eventually, their reported dispositions will be added to the ParkPennies.com coin guides as an enhancement to the existing "Current" and "Retired" notations. New notations will include "Canceled" for coin dies that are no longer capable of pressing original, unaltered coins again, "Assigned" for sold, auctioned, gifted, awarded etc. coin dies that can still press original coins, and "Lost" for dies that have an uncertain status. Last but not least, proof of canceled dies via canceled die coin images will be added to this page as they become available. Please contact ParkPennies by email or anony-mousely if you have an addition, correction or comment to share as this information has been shared with you. |

This is a close up of the Tinker Bell stamp used to cancel the DL0121, DL0122 and DL0123 Mulan pressed penny set. For clarification we have added an outline of a similar Tinker Bell image to the left of the canceling mark.
(The name "Tinkerbell" is not used by Disney.) This is a representative image of the Tinker Bell canceling mark used on this set of coins. However, each coin type in this set may have a slightly different canceling mark as each coin type has a separate and slightly unique engraving or etching. (See also CDL0121-123 type 2 coins.) |

About six sets were known sold via these auctions as of mid 2005 at the time the three canceled dies were also auctioned. (See also CDL0121-123 type 2 coins.) This is a close up of the small bit of "RETIRED" as seen on a "standard" roll coin. It was added to the DL0121, DL0122 and DL0123 Mulan pressed penny set after the first coins were pressed. This mark and a blank back are the defining differences between the first and second Mulan canceled coin types.
