About The Tokyo Disneyland Resort
Pressed Penny Book and Holder Guide
At first, we really didn't know how to list penny book medals. They are heavy, oblong, copper, engraved and associated with elongated souvenirs. But, they were not pressed in penny machines! They are simulated elongated souvenirs, medals or "coins". What to do? Give them their own page! Then, of course, readers asked for a Guide to Tokyo Disneyland Pressed Penny Books. So, here we are! :-)
There is a long story behind these books, that I really can't tell. However, here is the short version edited a bit... Some very nice folks came up with the idea of placing an elongated coin in the cover of a penny book, which they patented. A new twist on a staple souvenir item, that became very popular. Several amusement / theme parks like Sea World, Knott's Berry Farm and others offered the books for sale. (You probably have at least seen some of these books if you don't already collect them.)
Well, at long last, in 2000, Disneyland finally offered what was titled "The First Edition" Penny Collector book, also known as The First Edition Penny Book. It featured a solid copper exclusive and limited issue DL0146 elongated coin in the cover! Yes, you had to buy a $7.00 book to get the coin, but many park guests were more than happy to do so. Not too long after that all too shortly lived penny book was first chased by frantic Disneyland pressed penny collectors, a Tokyo Disneyland book appeared. The early Tokyo Disneyland penny books had medals in their cover for a short time and then were also replaced by plain coin less penny collecting books. However, they all live on here and as prized editions in many Disneyland elongated souvenir collections.
Today penny-in-the-cover penny collecting books are offered by hundreds of museums, space centers, national and state parks, zoos, aquariums, theme restaurants, and theme parks. by the good folks at www.PennyCollector.com. But sadly none are offered at the Disney Resorts.
Update: In September of 2010, Tokyo Disneyland offered sort of a compromise, a pocket in the cover of the penny book that can hold the coin you place inside it. Motivated collectors can also still find the original penny books, with coins in their covers, on eBay or for trade by fellow collectors from time to time. Happy Collecting, Boomer

book. This window or pocket is
an interesting compromise
for collectors that want a penny in the cover.
It holds most any "pressed penny" you wish to place in it. (We've chosen this incredibly beautiful example of pressed penny pulchritude, the ParkPennies.com pressed penny, for illustration purposes only. If you'd like one, see this sorta free pressed penny page.)
Advanced collectors will remember the first Disney penny collecting book ever offered at any Disney Resort, included an exclusive, limited edition Disneyland elongated coin inside the front cover. However, I understand the "coin in the cover" feature is patented and offered exclusively by The CTM Group, known by most of us as the cool guys at PennyCollector.com. I hope one day they will make penny books with elongated coins in the cover for Disneyland as they do for so many other theme parks.
