Elongated "Coin" Pressed Penny Style Medals

As noted in this Tokyo Disneyland "pressed penny" guide, a few undated coins were reissued at the Tokyo Disneyland Resort in 2003. The same dies were used, however, the machines vended switched planchets. That is, with previous "nickel" coins were pressed on copper "cent" planchets and the previously copper "cent" coins were pressed on "nickel" planchets . It appears to us that the revisited dies were used as temporaries between expired dies and the arrival of the next planned dies. Some of these issues were on-stage for a short time and can prove to be hard to find. Unless of course, they are reissued again in the future.

We are often reminded that the preferred numismatic term for these Tokyo Disneyland souvenirs is "Medals" or "Medallions". However, many avid collectors are known to use the words pressed pennies, as well as elongated coins, pressed nickels, flattened pennies, crushed pennies, squashed pennies, rolled pennies mashed pennies, smashed pennies, stamped pennies, squished pennies, smushed pennies, stretched pennies, memory pennies keepsake pennies or pressed coins when describing these fun "pressed penny" souvenirs.

The first coin was pressed on this die, the the 1996 issued TDLVT01_T2 copper souvenir. When this die, was brought out of retirement and placed on-stage for about two weeks in 2003, this now very scarce nickel souvenir was available. The two souvenirs, the copper and nickel are equally scarce and can be identified only by their copper vs. nickel finishes.
All three of these coins, the TDLVT01 and TDLVT01_T2 / TDL0301, are very similar in design and appearance. To view a detailed comparison of them, click here.
Update 2006: The once rare TDL0301 nickel has been repeatedly "reissued" at TDL much to the horror of TDL collectors. "Reissuing" now appears to be a common risk with non-dated TDR medals.
