Elongated "Coin" Pressed Penny Style Medals

To open the 2001-2002 section of the TDL Tokyo Disneyland Park Guide, I chose to share one of the first coins ever on-stage at the Tokyo Disneyland park. It's Donald "Penny Arcade". As you can see, the engraving, theme, and detail are very nice. Is it cool or what?

As evidenced by the 1996-1998 section of the TDL "pressed penny" guide, to the best of our knowledge, 1996 brought only three different coins and they were from the only Tokyo Disney park. By 2004, Tokyo DisneySea, a "second gate" was also offering souvenir medals and as you can see while browsing the guides, the numbers of coins have skyrocketed over the years.

In about 1998, we started to notice interest in these coins was growing in the US. In 2002 or so, we noticed an increasing number of visitors to our previous web site from Japan. Today, we owe a lot to fellow collectors here in the US and especially in Japan that have contributed to this guide over the years. Not to mention, pressing coins for us to display for you here.

Editor's note: We are often reminded that the preferred numismatic term for these Tokyo Disneyland souvenirs is "Medals" or "Medallions". However, many avid collectors are known to use the words pressed pennies, as well as elongated coins, pressed nickels, flattened pennies, crushed pennies, squashed pennies, rolled pennies mashed pennies, smashed pennies, stamped pennies, squished pennies, smushed pennies, stretched pennies, memory pennies keepsake pennies or pressed coins when describing these fun "pressed penny" souvenirs.
